The 11 chapters included in this volume, all contributed by distinguished scientists in the field, systematically reveal the role of culture in group perceptions, social identity, group dynamics, identity negotiation, teamwork, intergroup relations, and intergroup communication, as well as the joint effect of cultural and group processes in interpersonal trust and creativity
While much has been written about the link between postmodernism & popular culture, very little has been said about the connection of either with political culture. Three such possible connections are explored: with political identity, with subversion & empowerment, & with moral theory. Each suggests an avenue for political scientists to follow; however, it is warned that some of the more extravagant claims made for postmodernism & popular culture need treating with political skepticism. 22 References.
The problem of specifying the ways in which culture influences cognitive processes is discussed using the relation between culture and memory as a special case. Beginning with scattered suggestions from the anthropological and psychological literature, a research strategy combining ethnolinguistic and experimental psychological techniques is described. Mnemonic performance is shown to depend upon a host of situational (cultural) factors which must be systematically explored in order to determine culture‐memory relations.
From gay and lesbian political activism during the 1960s and 70s through the 1980s queer movement inspired by the AIDS crisis to the recent push towards normalization for same-sex couples via registered partnerships and adoption rights, LGBT issues have been moving steadily into the political and cultural mainstream of the German-speaking lands. A host of German LGBT culture has emerged in recent years, including films and literary works. Queerness has also taken hold within the academy of the German-speaking lands. The present volume includes contributions exploring the representation and reality of LGBT individuals and issues in historical and contemporary German-speaking culture. What only a few decades ago would have been considered a totalitarian nightmare seems to have become reality: Surveillance practices and technologies have infiltrated all aspects of our lives, forcing us to reconsider established notions of privacy, subjectivity, and the status of the individual in society. The United States is central to contemporary concerns about surveillance. American companies are at the forefront of developing surveillance technologies; and government agencies, in the name of security and law and order, are monitoring our words and actions more than ever before. This book brings together an interdisciplinary group of scholars to explore the implications of what many consider to be a far-reaching social, political, and cultural transformation. ; Florian Zappe and Andrew S.
