This paper attempts to describe and to explain political news coverage during the 1986 Japanese election campaign in six major newspapers; it aims also to provide an examination of the editorial content pattern of the Japanese papers in an election time. The findings show that political news coverage was dominated by "Horserace" related items rather than "Issues" or "Campaign Events" stories, and that most of the papers tended to over-represent the dominant Liberal Democratic Party (L.P.D.) and to under-represent the opposition parties; the L.D.P. related news items were generally larger and included more pictures, which were also larger.
Abstract We document a strong political cycle in bank credit and industry outcomes in Turkey. In line with theories of tactical redistribution, state-owned banks systematically adjust their lending around local elections compared with private banks in the same province based on electoral competition and political alignment of incumbent mayors. This effect only exists in corporate lending and creates credit constraints for firms in opposition areas, which suffer drops in assets, employment and sales but not firm entry. Financial resources and factors of production are misallocated as more efficient provinces and industries suffer the greatest constraints, reducing aggregate productivity.

This study examines whether corporate political connections influence tax aggressiveness in state-owned enterprises and private-owned enterprises in Indonesia. The observation period is 2015 to 2017. The population taken is a state-owned enterprise and a non-financial sector private sector business entity with 327 companies with a period of 3 years. Then the determination of the sample using a purposive sampling method used a sample of 148 companies. The results of this study indicate that the existence of political connections in state-owned enterprises and private-owned enterprises has a significant positive effect on tax aggressiveness.
Why do legislators switch party? We seek to identify whether "party switching" is mainly determined by power (to join a more influential party) or ideology (to join a party with closer policy goals). We focus on the 557 cases of political group switching in the European Parliament between 1979 and 2014. We find that most of these cases were from smaller, more marginal, and oppositional groups, to larger, more pivotal, and governing groups. Nevertheless, we also find that ideological congruence (between an MEP and his or her prospective group) was an important determinant of political group switching.

In his 1975 paper, Nordhaus formally proves that governments whose aim is to be reelected, will generate 'political' business cycles. Empirical results do not confirm this proposition, especially in countries used to early elections. We show that if there is a non-zero probability for elections to be called before the legal term, the political business cycle will be less pronounced, even if no early election actually takes place; moreover, if the normal electoral cycle is interrupted before the legal term, one might observe an inversion of the business cycle, or no cycle at all. ; info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Numbers of women in public representative office have increased dramatically in Uganda since the introduction of the National Resistance Movement's 'no party' system, because affirmative action measures have been taken to reserve seats for them in Parliament and local government. This article offers an assessment of the impact of these measures on women's political effectiveness, examining how far women in Parliament have been able to advance gender equity concerns in key new legislation. The article suggests that the political value of specially created new seats has been eroded by their exploitation as currency for the NRM's patronage system, undermining women's effectiveness as representatives of women's interests once in office. This is because the gate-keepers of access to reserved political space are not the women's movement, or even women voters, but Movement elites. The women's movement in Uganda, though a beneficiary of the NRM's patronage, has become increasingly critical of the deepening authoritarianism of the NRM, pointing out that the lack of internal democracy in the Movement accounts for its failure to follow constitutional commitments to gender equity through to changes in key new pieces of legislation affecting women's rights.
