These pages wish to offer a brief reflection on an aspect of the process of professionalization that Greek warfare underwent from the end of the fifth century BC onward (all dates hereafter BC). The analysis will focus on the content and nature of the τέχνη that the Greek hoplite ought to acquire to become a χειροτέχνης — an expert artisan in massed combat.1 The intention is to explore whether this τέχνη could be understood not as technical proficiency in a certain military skill that the hoplite acquires by practice but as a choice he is trained to make between εὐταξία and ἀταξία. These terms, usually understood in a technical acceptation as 'order / discipline' and 'disorder / insubordination', will be presented here as frames of mind [ἤθη τῆς ψυχῆς] and discussed in the light of Plato's use of the terms εὐψυχία and κακοψυχία as hallmarks of the good and bad hoplite.

The paintings in question have been part of the Byzantine and ChristianMuseum's collection since 1918 (figs. 1-2). The first painting (fig. 1) representsthe "Tale of Susanna" (Old Testament), the young Jewish girl who refusedto succumb to the lust of two aged judges, who then falsely accused her ofadultery. The other one (fig. 2) represents "Eros" sitting on a column accompaniedby two other persons, a woman (bottom right) and a man (bottom left).They are supposed to be in love with each other, and they are just about tobe devoured by dragons. Both panels were painted as a couple on "November7, 1825" by the priest Agapios (mid-18th c.-1829), the so-called "Defterevon(second priest in the rank) of Siphnos". (Siphnos: the small Aegean island,where Agapios worked during most of his life).Using two different "languages", the two paintings as a couple representa combined attack against human passion and carnal desire. Moreover, both ofthem but especially "Eros" represent an innovative (iconographic and stylistic)trend in Greek painting of the time, also evident in other works. Some of these works are similar (like those now in view) in their attitude against social tendencies,criticized as non-ethical or spiritually dangerous (figs. 5, 6).From the 1770's onwards Greek Enlightenment has been celebrating therole of passion in human activity. During the same period, erotic literature inprose or in verse cultivated on the basis of Enlightenment's standards, wasemerging and was gaining a numerous audience in the greater centers of theOttoman Empire. There is a manuscript of the beginning of the 19th c., nowin the Benaki Museum (figs. 7, 8), where erotic verses are combined with patrioticones indicating the passion or love for one's country. An image of "Eros",which is also contained in this manuscript (fig. 8), gives us the opportunity(when compared to Defterevon's panel), to indicate that other representationalpossibilities of the passion of love, placing the emphasis on the positive ratherthan the negative aspects of this passion, were indeed present at the time.Although it is obvious both in written and iconographical sources that apart of the Greek Orthodox Church was very frustrated with such a positivetreatment of the passion of love (fig. 9), the pro-love tendency, going togetherwith some changes in political thought, left in the following decades its traces,obvious in the liberal spirit which came to contest the traditional spirit of theChurch. But the fact that Enlightenment was defeated within Greek societylong before 1825 does not permits us placing the two panels in the context ofthe general reactionary activity of the Church.So, the examination of the historical situation in the island of Siphnosaround 1825 proves inevitable in order to achieve a full estimation of themeaning of these two paintings. Many issues were at risk at the time whenGreek Revolution burst out (1821), driven forward by a huge economic crisis.The most prominent issue, which in a way incorporated all the others, was thestrife between old and new economic, political, and ideological powers in Greeksociety. This strife is also evident at Siphnos. The local aristocracy of the "oldregime", without being explicitly "anti-revolutionary", yet was very anxiousin its efforts to maintain at any cost the political status that was enjoying longbefore. On the other hand, the basic scope of the main revolutionary powers,i.e. the Greek bourgeoisie, was to give life to a new national and liberal countryin which the central authority of the state would (and should) overcome allprevious local and centrifugal authorities.Internal quarrels emerging on the island of Siphnos (mostly around 1823-1825) must be placed in the wider perspective of the revolutionary period'sGreek civil war. The leading actors of these local quarrels were from one sideNikolaos Chrysogelos, a mid-range scholar and native of Siphnos, who hadtook the initiative of the island's revolutionary activity in 1821, and from theother side the famous Siphnian family of Baos with its allies, who was at the top of the island's aristocracy long before 1821. In March 1825, immediatelyafter the end of the civil wars, Chrysogelos was officially denounce thepriest and Economic Administrator (Oikonomos) of the local Church, NikolaosBaos, that exercising his power beyond given authority at the period betweenOctober-December 1824 "he had divided married couples, he had marriedadulterers for money".This specific episode, examined in detail in our study, leads us to concludethat (in strong possibility) Chrysogelos himself (or at least some people of hisentourage) commissioned the two paintings in order to prove "immoral" theformer local authorities and so to diminish their political influence in the island.In the light of these events, the position taken by the two works becomesclearer. Political relations between local aristocratic powers and Constantinopledo exist in the wide frame of a common-shared ideology, which one could becall "phanariotic". This ideological frame includes also pro-love ideas, whichwas expressed through the phanariotic love-songs. According to some testimony,Nikolaos Baos' father, Apostolos Baos, had had some knowledge on musicacquired in Constantinople, at the time when he had been a pupil of Petros ofPeloponnessos, a very famous versifier and composer of erotic songs.The point of the two panel's suspension needs now an answer. In February1825, after a proposal made by Chrysogelos, the Revolutionary Governmentdecided to open again the School of the Holy Sepulcher in Siphnos, renamedas "Common Greek School". In our view, both panels were to be suspended inthis building, which now was the most prominent civic building on the island,a symbol of the newly established powers and their ideological predominance.

Το ονειρεμένο Λος Άντζελες δημιουργήθηκε για να πουλήσει ένα ιδανικό και μαζί με αυτό βεβαίως και κομμάτια γης. Αυτός ο μηχανισμός υποστηρίχθηκε από μια νέο-φιλελεύθερη διακυβέρνηση που επέλεξε να αφήσει στο Εμπορικό Επιμελητήριο της πόλης να αποφασίσει ποιο δρόμο θα ακολουθήσει. Το άρθρο αυτό εξετάζει την επιρροή που είχε ο φαντασιακός σχεδιασμός του Λος Άντζελες στην κατοίκηση του αστικού χώρου και πώς αυτή η φαντασιακή διάσταση της πόλης έγινε ο ακρογωνιαίος λίθος της ασυναγώνιστης ανάπτυξής της. Διερευνάται παράλληλα το πώς η κοινωνική κινητοποίηση προσαρμόζεται σε αυτόν τον νέο αστικό σχεδιασμό που ταλαντεύεται ανάμεσα σε δύο είδη κανόνων, έναν πρώτο που βασίζεται σε ουτοπίες και ένα δεύτερο που φτιάχνεται από ασυμβίβαστες αλήθειες. Οι Αντζελίνος πειραματίζονται με νέους τρόπους προκειμένου να ανακτήσουν την ανθρωπινότητα της περιοχής που μοιάζει να αντιλαμβάνεται του κατοίκους της κυρίως ως κοινωνικο-οικονομικά στατιστικά δεδομένα. Η κοινωνική κινητοποίηση στο Λος Άντζελες αναγκάζεται να προσμετρήσει αυτήν την συνήθεια μυθοπλασίας και τη μυθοπλαστική διαδικασία της πόλης προκειμένου να επινοήσει τρόπους διαφυγής από αυτές και να υπάρξει σε μια πραγματικότητα καθημερινότητας έξω, την οποία ωστόσο αυτές ανταγωνίζονται. Αυτή η έντονα οπτική και ορατή πρακτική έγινε για το ΛΑ κοινωνικός θεσμός που τείνει να επανοηματοδοτήσει κοινωνικές αξίες και πρακτικές κοινωνικότητας. ; Ever since Los Angeles was annexed to the rest of the United States in 1848, the city's publicists, better known as boosters, have fashioned a fantasized version of this newly acquired space that has impacted its very identity up until today. The dreamed Los Angeles was created in order to sell an ideal and, off course, land parcels. This mechanism was supported by a local neo-liberal government that chose to let the city's Chamber of Commerce decide which course to take. This article aims at showing the impact that the dreamed Los Angeles had on the effective urban area and its inhabitants, and how this fantasized dimension of the city became the cornerstone that enabled its unparalleled development.It also seeks out to investigate how social mobilization is adjusting to this new urban order that oscillates constantly between two sets of rules, one made of illusions, the other made of uncompromising truths. Angelenos are thus exploring new ways to regain some humanness in a territory that seems to apprehend its inhabitants merely as socio-economic statistics. Social mobilization in Los Angeles is thus forced to take into account this fictionalized habit and fictionalizing process of the city to produce new ways of escaping it in order to exist outside of it, in a reality that concurs with their everyday Los Angeles. One particular practice that has gradually benefited from more and more visibility in the city since the beginning of the xxistcentury, is doing just that: Street Art. This highly visual and visible practice is becoming, in Los Angeles, a social enactment that tends to reconceptualize social values as well as socializing practices.

Η επικέντρωση στην έννοια της "δυνατότητας" ως ενός ευρέως φάσματος πολιτισμικά και πολιτικά ετερόκλητων πρακτικών και ιδεών καθιστά εφικτό να αναλυθούν με όρους ενδεχομενικότητας: η εμφάνιση διαφορετικών τρόπων αστικής ζωής και αντι-δράσης μέσα από την επικέντρωση σε οραματισμούς που κινητοποιούν κοινωνικά κινήματα· το πώς αυτοί οι οραματισμοί γίνονται δράση· οι ήδη πολιτισμικά διαθέσιμοι ή φαντασιακά νέοι τρόποι συσχετισμού στις νέες μορφές κοινωνικών κινητοποιήσεων· οι τακτικές, στρατηγικές και ρητορικές που τα κοινωνικά κινήματα θέτουν σε χρήση, καθώς αντι-δρούν ενάντια σε περισσότερο ή λιγότερο αυταρχικές πρακτικές στους σύγχρονους νεοφιλελεύθερους καιρούς. Its focus on "possibility" as a broad array of culturally and politically disparate practices and ideas makes possible to discuss in the frame of contigency: the appearance of different forms of urban living and re-acting by focusing on visions of urban life that are activated by social movements; How these visions are put in practice; The already culturally available or newly imagined ways of relating in the new forms of social mobilization; The tactics, strategies, poetics, and rhetorics that social movements employ as they re-act against more or less authoritarian practices in neoliberal times. The case studies concern the following cities around the world: Bogota (Colombia), Los Angeles (U.S.A.), Istanbul (Turkey), Thessaloniki (Greece).

Το άρθρο πραγματεύεται την ανάγκη μιας πολιτισμικής πρακτικής που θα αντιστέκεται δημιουργικά στην ομογενοποιητική πολιτική των ηγεμονικών πολιτισμών. Προτείνεται μια κριτική σχέση με την τέχνη που θα συμβάλει στην υπέρβαση της πολιτισμικής μονομέρειας και της ακόλουθης σε αυτήν κυριαρχικής πολιτικής. Υπογραμμίζει, επίσης, ότι μια τέτοια μετάβαση «στις κοινωνίες της ερμηνείας» αποτελεί πολιτικό διακύβευμα του καιρού μας μιας και η διεθνής πολιτική πραγματικότητα των δια-κρατικών διακανονισμών μοιάζει ανίκανη να περιορίσει την πολιτισμική επιθετικότητα των ισχυρών. Το άρθρο εστιάζει παραδειγματικά στη ζωγραφική τέχνη και στον τρόπο που αποτυπώνεται σε αυτή μια κριτική της πολιτισμικής λογικής της εξουσίας. Σε αυτή την κατεύθυνση σχολιάζονται έργα των W. Blake και F. Goya που παρουσιάζουν τη φρίκη του πολέμου, την αμετροέπεια της υπερμεγέθους εξουσίας και τις υπερβολές του ορθολογισμού.

Victory in the great athletic games was widely seen in the Greek world as one of the summits of human achievement. Yet a surprisingly large number of texts present a negative view of athletics, including Xenophanes fr. 2 West and Euripides fr. 282 TrGF. The reasons for this criticism – which has variously been interpreted as a critique of the aristocracy, professionalism in sport or the reaction of a minority of intellectuals – remain obscure. This paper argues that opposition to athletics was not political but part of a longstanding debate on the relative merits of different forms of skill (τέχνη). This debate was prompted by widespread economic specialisation and professionalism in the fields of athletics, poetry and philosophy (among others). The criticism of athletics be-comes part of a strategy, by which the professional promotes his own form of τέχνη, with the implicit aim of winning respect and financial rewards. Professionals operated in a market for knowledge, one in which they had to sell their skills, justify their fees and counter common prejudices against paid work. Our texts reflect the tendency for professionals to achieve these aims by launching pre-emptive attacks upon their competitors. Athletes became a common target for such invective because their unwavering popularity and success at eliciting rewards in the archaic and classical periods made them a constant target of envy from other professionals.

In the De oratore, Cicero's portrait of Antonius is deeply influenced both byCato and Academic philosophy; L. Crassus, on the other hand, is characterised bythe range of his philosophical interests. The reversal of the Gorgias-Callicles relationshipwith reference to the Socrates-Plato relationship, the βίος σύνθετος idealthat finds its culmination in political life, the paradigm of ἐγκύκλιος παιδεία thatincludes philosophy – all are derived from the teachings of Antiochus of Ascalon.Cicero's original contribution may be the synthesis of philosophy and rhetoricand the attack on the fragmentation of knowledge. Philo of Larissa exerts a clearinfluence on both Crassus and Cicero's position on ὑπόθεσις-causa and θέσις-quaestio. Wir befinden uns mitten im Langzeitprojekt »Aufklärung«, dem Ausgang der Menschheit aus ihrer selbstverschuldeten Unmündigkeit – und bislang sieht es gut aus: Die Freiheit der Andersdenkenden, die Gleichheit aller vor dem Gesetz und die Solidarität unter den Menschen auf dem Erdball sind allgemein akzeptierte Entwicklungsziele. Über den Weg dahin lässt sich trefflich streiten, am besten in einer der schwatzhaftesten Staatsformen, eben in der parlamentarischen Demokratie. Der Aushandlungsprozess wird medienöffentlich geführt, von Kants Leserwelt bis zum world wide web von Berners-Lee nutzt der politische Mensch die Kulturtechniken Schrift, Bild und Zahl, um öffentlich von seiner Vernunft Gebrauch zu machen. Informatik ist die technische Wissenschaft, die sich mit dem Entwurf von informations- und kommunikationstechnischen Artefakten und deren Auswirkungen auf die Lebenswelt des Menschen beschäftigt, diese Arbeit fokussiert die technischen Bedingungen der Möglichkeit des öffentlichen Vernunftgebrauchs. Technisch Handelnde besitzen eine ungeheure Macht, die öffentliche Deliberation zu ermöglichen oder zu bremsen. In der nun ausgerufenen Turing-Galaxis muss nun gerade die Informatik in allen Bindestrich-Varianten Verantwortung für die Gewährleistung von Öffentlichkeit übernehmen. Diese Arbeit soll dazu beitragen. ; The long term project »Enlightenment« is in full swing: the freedom to dissent, equality under public law, and solidarity with all the people from all over the world – these self-imposed development goals are widely accepted by all human beings. Since everything is exquisitely debated in a parliamentary democracy, this chatty form of government, citizens will of course exquisitely debate on how to achieve these goals. The negotiation process is conducted in and by public media, from Kant''s world of readers (»Leserwelt«) on to the hypermedia of the world wide web, the homo politicus uses cultural techniques like writing, image and number for his public display of reasoning. Informatics (and also computer science for that matter) is the study of designing information and communications technology and assessing it in all social respects; this dissertation focuses on the necessary conditions for the possibility of public reasoning. The Greek word τέχνη is translated as either craft or art, in this political context technē also means mindset, chain of ideas or algorithms. In this enquiry entitled »technē der Publizität«, we will visit places of the public, starting from the Greek »agora« via Victorian coffee houses to the contemporary locations of the networked public sphere. Technicians yield the power to enable or suppress public deliberation; in the so called Turing Galaxy, Informaticians have the responsibility to ensure the possibilities of the existence of an informed public. This thesis tries to accept this responsibility.

Ο εικονογραφικός κύκλος του αγίου Δημητρίου στη μεσαιωνική ρωσική ζωγραφική περιλαμβάνει μερικές φορές δύο σκηνές με την ιστορία της κεντητής μορφής του αγίου: α) δύο κοπέλες υφαίνουν την εικόνα σύμφωνα με διαταγή του στρατιωτικού διοικητή των Σαρακηνών που είχαν καταλάβει τη Θεσσαλονίκη, β) ο άγιος σώζει τις δύο κοπέλες που εικονίζονται να κοιμούνται στη βασιλική του Αγίου Δημητρίου. Αυτή η ιστορία είναι άγνωστη στη βυζαντινή αγιογραφία, αλλά απαντά σε ρωσικά μεσαιωνικά κείμενα. Οι απεικονίσεις της στη ρωσική τέχνη δείχνει το ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον του ρωσικού πολιτισμού στη λατρεία των εικόνων και στην οπτική αναπαράσταση αυτού του θέματος. ; The iconographic cycle of St Demetrios in medieval Russian painting sometimes includes two scenes with the story of the embroidered image of this saint: a) two maidens embroidering the icon after the order of the military leader of Sarracenes who had occupied Thessaloniki; b) the saint saving the two maidens who are represented sleeping in the basilica of St. Demetrios. This story is unknown to the Greek hagiography, but occurs in Russian medieval texts. Its illustrations in Russian art seem to be appeared because of a specific interest of Russian culture to the veneration of the icons and to the visual illustration of this theme.

Στο χώρο της σύγχρονης τέχνης και συγκεκριμένα στο έργο της διασπορικής καλλιτέχνιδας Mona Hatoum στρέφεται το παρόν κείμενο. Κινούμενο σε πολλαπλές διαδρομές μετατοπίσεων και εκτοπίσεων, μεταξύ Παλαιστίνης, Λιβάνου και Βρετανίας, το έργο της ενσωματώνει «χαρτογραφίες περασμάτων», που εκ-τοπίζουν τον κόσμο και τις καθιερωμένες απεικονίσεις του. Καθώς επανεγγράφει σύγχρονες ιστορίες διαφυγής και περιχαράκωσης, αποσταθεροποιεί κυρίαρχες εννοιολογήσεις του «οίκου» και του «κόσμου». Πρόκειται για ένα έργο που, μέσα από τις συνυφασμένες χωρογραφίες και σωματογραφίες πουυλοποιεί, ανοίγει δρόμους εναλλακτικής κατανόησης των ιεραρχικών προκείμενων της οικουμενικότητας αλλά και του δυνάμει ανατρεπτικού δυναμικού της «ξενότητας» και του «ανήκειν». ; The present essay draws from contemporary art and particularly from the art of the diasporic artist Mona Hatoum. Hers is an art about a corporeal subjectivity attuned to a living cartography of passages between Palestine, Lebanon, and England. I explore her art work with intersecting cartographies and corporealities, by focusing on her artistic gestures of displacing established notions of "home" and the "world", in all their gendered implications. I try to unravel the ways in which Mona Hatoum keeps us on the alert for the hierarchies of false and abstract universalism, while, at the same time, keeps open the promise (and the question) for the potential subversiveness of "foreignness" and "belonging".

El trabajo intenta responder a la requisitoria por la belleza en el siglo XXI. Lo hace mediante una breve hermenéutica sobre lo que Heidegger deslizó al final de La pregunta por la técnica, cuando señaló —a propósito del destino oculto que estamos llamados a descubrir frente a la amenaza del Gestell— que «en otro tiempo se llamó τέχνη también a la ποίησις de las bellas artes». De este modo, se sugiere que esta pregunta ya fue respondida hace más de medio siglo por el filósofo de Friburgo. Belleza equivaldría al resplandecer de lo salvador, en cuanto a que, en ella, y sólo en ella, y por medio del arte, más que un representar, sería posible tanto un crear como un resguardar [el Ser]. Este llamado lo hemos vislumbrado en las obras de seis artistas contemporáneos, quienes testimonian —precisamente— este creador resguardo de la verdad en la obra. Así, las obras de arte de Kepa Garraza, Gina Heyer, Kathrin Longhurst, Leah Giberson, Nusret Aktay y Scott Listfield, parecen prefigurar cada una, fruto de mundos y de genios tan idénticos, pero tan distintos, una misma destinación utópica y salvífica.

Simply by formulating a question about the nature of ancient Greek poetry or music, any modern English speaker is already risking anachronism. In recent years especially, scholars have reminded one another that the words 'music' and 'poetry' denote concepts with no easy counterpart in Greek. μουσική in its broadest sense evokes not only innumerable kinds of structured movement and sound but also the political, psychological and cosmic order of which song, verse and dance are supposed to be perceptible manifestations.1 Likewise, ποίησις and the ποιητικὴ τέχνη can encompass all kinds of 'making', from the assembly of a table to the construction of a rhetorical argument.2 Of course, there were specifically artistic usages of these terms—according to Plato, 'musical and metrical production' was the default meaning of ποίησις in everyday speech.3 But even in discussions which restrict themselves to the sphere of human art, we find nothing like the neat compartmentalization of harmonized rhythmic melody on the one hand, and stylized verbal composition on the other, which is often casually implied or expressly formulated in modern comparisons of 'music' with 'poetry'.4 For many ancient theorists the City Dionysia, a dithyrambic festival and a recitation of Homer all featured different versions of one and the same form of composition, a μουσική or ποιητική to which λόγοι, γράμματα and συλλαβαί were just as essential as ἁρμονία, φθόγγοι, ῥυθμός and χρόνοι.5
