The article presents the analysis of the possible prerequisites and conditions which could conduce wide protest activities of mass political processes. Basing on the survey data of IISEPS poll, the author analyses the main question: are there conditions for the formation of a revolutionary situation in Belarus today.
Andriy Portnov identifies several main characteristics of Euromaidan that had predetermined the main venues of subsequent political developments and also signified potentially productive research agendas. He starts by registering the structural failure of the state as the main reason for Euromaidan and the main challenge to which the Ukrainian society had to respond. His second theme is the ambivalent role of social elevators launched by Maidan: on the one hand, they catapulted new people to prominent positions, while on the other, they helped to integrate old institutions into the new society by "Maidanizing" them with new faces. Portnov then shows how the familiar trope of fixed ethnopolitical identities with clear territorial localization has been compromised by post-Maidan developments, to the utter confusion of Russian strategists and many Ukrainian (and European) intellectuals. Historical parallels have been another discursive strategy exploited by all sides of the Ukrainian conflict to strengthen their case or discredit opponents. By itself, no historical precedence (and no familiar tropes such as "civil war" or "ethnic conflict") can fully explain and express the new and truly unprecedented phenomenon of post-Maidan Ukraine. This brings Portnov to his final point, about the significance for Ukraine of finding its own distinctive subjectivity. He believes that this subjectivity should embrace the fundamental hybridity of Ukraine as a country speaking two main languages (without clear territorial demarcation), practicing three Christian denominations of the Eastern ritual, and combining several coexisting historical memories.
; The article examines the history of functioning of the Turkism 'maidan' in the Russian and Ukrainian languages, and the development of the semantic structure of this lexeme as a Ukrainian cultureme in the Russian political media discourse. The relative frequency of usage of this lexeme in early 21 st century in the Russian mass media is connected with socio-political situation in Ukraine. The following lexico-semantic variants of this lexeme are found in mass media:"place where people gather on different occasions"; "timeless protest action, revolution" and "participants of a protest action, protesters' camp". New lexico-semantic variants of the word 'maidan' make certain contexts ambiguous.
; In this article the author focuses on the political crisis in modern Ukraine. Under these circumstances, the stock of public confidence in official institutions of power is almost exhausted, thereby legitimating new institutions representing informal structures. One such institution is the Maidan parallel structure, duplicating the functions of state structures. The author tries to rethink Maidan through a unique Ukrainian political culture and quite bright and attractive political image. Legitimation of Maidan and delegitimation of formal structures from the point of view of the author may be due to the low tolerance of society to the government itself, which is a specific feature of the Ukrainian political culture.
; The paper has brought to light factors involving recent events in Ukraine considering them with regard to Yuri Burlan' System Vector psychology. The authors suggest that the factual outcome should be examined from inside mental mechanisms being rooted at the social unconscious of both the Ukrainian and Russian peoples. Only the system thinking while taking into consideration the mental structure and specifics of mentality in our nations, shall enable an observer to precisely perceive regularities of current geopolitical processes, and shall equip a researcher with an efficient device for political forecasting.
; The article analyses the events of August, 1991 in Moscow with the use of Maidan theoretical model. The latter is understood as the protest of the organized active minority which is gathered in capital city (usually on its central area), acts on behalf of people and dethrones the existing political mode. Maidan is considered as an obligatory element of «color revolutions». The paper tells about the role of external forces in the organization of Maidan. The general lines «Kiev Maidan 2013-2014» and «Moscow 1991» come to light. The defeat of the USSR in the Cold War is considered as the defeat in information and psychological war. For Russia it is important to form the ideology which measures up the calls of a modern epoch and raises the competitiveness of the country in global rivalry of countries and regions. The aspiration of the West to organize a new Maidan in modern Russia is shown. The author draws a conclusion about the necessity to exclude the renewal of events of August of 1991 in Russia.
; The article deals with the processes connected with the development of semantics of the word maidan (spelt both with a capital and small letter), which became popular in the last decade mass media in Russian and Ukraine. The author gives the definitions of the meaning of the word in the dictionaries of two last centuries, describes the peculiarities of its origin Persian, Arabic and Turkish roots, and demonstrates three basic projections of its functioning in the East Slavic linguistic reality: traditional-historic, argotic and socio-political. The broad variability of the meaning of the lexeme under study, right up to its toponymic function, is somehow or rather caused by the basic frame orientation: "place, space". The direct locative meaning "square, open space" is transformed into transferred and functional meanings special use of space (metonymy), and undergoes rethinking on the basis of similarity of place and function (functional transfer of meaning): maidan is trading, bazaar, marketplace. Another metonymic transfer reflects one more function of the meaning "place, space" maidan as a social action or event, organized at a certain place: "gathering, meeting, and collective discussion". Alongside with this metonymic semantics, one more transfer of meaning takes place due to adjacency: maidan means people who gather at a certain place, participants of a gathering. In the modern linguistic reality "maidan" is a semantic neologism of the new time, it is a complex sememe, in the structure of which, the results of metaphorical and metonymical transformations of the original locative meaning are interwoven and East Slavic history is combined with realia of the modern socio-cultural, political and linguistic reality.
Viacheslav Likhachev is a historian and political scientist, a well-known expert on right-wing and ultranationalist movements in Russia and Ukraine. Interviewed by Andriy Portnov, Likhachev reflects on the problem of personal involvement with events that he is expected to analyze objectively as an expert. The interview touches upon the much trumpeted theme of the role of Ukrainian nationalists in the Euromaidan and in subsequent political developments. While admitting the visibility of nationalists during the revolution, Likhachev stresses the diversity of the group indiscriminatingly branded as "nationalists," the marginal role of xenophobes among them, and the creative appropriation of their symbols by the broader revolutionary movement, which has transformed the original meaning of nationalist emblems and slogans. The concluding part of the interview is dedicated to the discussion of the dynamics of xenophobia in the Ukrainian society (arguably, decreasing after reaching its peak sometime around 2008), and the prospects for developing multicultural social identities in Ukraine.
; Opportunity to identify potential weak link in the system of geopolitical relations is crucial to contemporary world politics. For some years I am developing a model of global geopolitical dynamics. This model allows one to consider the geopolitical phenomena as a result of energy transfer both of social action and of physical energy (solar energy and internal energy of the Earth). The subject of this article is the link between the destructive mass actions in Old World of 2005—2013 and increasing of seismic activity and its transfer by the global north-south and latitudinal lineaments. Based on a considerable amount of empirical data I managed to identify the most active latitudinal and north-south fault zones (22—23° E, 30° E. 36° E, 44° E, 51° E; 40° N, 50° N) and Old World's areas of high social tension located on this lineaments. These social tensions areas are related to each other by 'lines of force] of social and physical energy transfer under the leading influence of rotational forces, which in the Eastern Hemisphere directed from south to north of the equator. On the basis of social and political analysis of events of 2005—2013 in Maghreb, Levant, at Middle East and in Europe, I conclude about the main reason of social tension common to these regions, which is enhanced by the action of natural forces. I suppose this main reason is unemployment and the degradation of social relations under its influence. The second major cause of tension, especially for countries of the South, is desertification of lands. Hence I conclude ineffective military action for quell the unrest in geological active areas and give preference to measures for job creation, administrative and police actions on compulsion to socially useful labor and ecological activities.

; The author analyzes the moral underpinnings of the Orange Revolution in Ukraine to suggest that its participants were not motivated merely by a base consideration of individual socioeconomic or political welfare understood in utilitarian terms. Utilitarianism—as understood by Thomas Nagel, Peter Singer, John Stuart Mill, Charles Taylor, Friedrich Nietzsche, Max Scheler, and Pope John Paul II—is analyzed to demonstrate that what happened in the public square (the "majdan" ) in Kyiv in the Orange Revolution was not utilitarianism proper but rather a "geopolitical seismic shift" as Ukrainians, manifesting a new spiritual maturity, exercised their hard-won freedom to reject political corruption and to protest electoral fraud precisely by coming together as a community united by the higher values of love and self-sacrifice and a recognition that the transcendent dignity of the human person and the defense of human rights must be the foundation for a true culture of life.
The current study represents an attempt to build a model of frame representation of MAIDAN-concept which is analyzed in terms of its cause and contact interactions with its concomitant concept GOVERNMENT. The model relies on the discourse material of British Internet mass media and is represented from the perspective of four basic frames (Thing, Action, Comparison and Identification Frames). Along with the broad notion of "frame", the article considers the notions of "frame-script" and "frame-plan", highlights their deviations, and defines the status of the analyzed concept MAIDAN.
