The Article of Vladimir Paniotto, Director General of Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, KIIS, Professor of National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA) analyzes the results of Ukrainian polls on the prospects of integration with EU versus Russia, as well as the development of the protest movement in Kyiv, it shows the data from the polls at Kyiv rallies in November-December 2013. Ukrainian public opinion is split: a lot of people would like to be in Europe and Russia at the same time. A separate referendum on Ukraine's joining the Customs Union with Russia (CU), 55% will vote in favor against 45% against. However, is the poll gives only one choice: either EU or CU, то за ЕС 51% will be pro-EU, and 49% would prefer joining CU, i.e. roughly equally. As before, majority supports EU in the Western and Central Ukraine, (86% against 14% and 61% against 39%), whereas the supporters of entering the Customs Union dominate in Southern and Eastern regions (64% against 36% and 81% against 19%). Ukrainian opinion on the European Union will also be affected by the relations with Russia upon integration with the European Union. Majority of Ukrainians prefer an independent Ukraine and good relations with Russia, visa-free travel and no borders (73%), while only 9% of Ukrainians prefer unification with Russia.
