The article analyzes mass reactions caused by the crisis of Putin's regime's legitimacy, as well as mechanisms of consequent consolidation of Russia's society around the authorities due to the aggressive anti-Ukrainian and anti-western propagandist campaign in 2014. The increase of social tension and discontent in Russian society which became noticeable in 2011-12 and manifested in mass protest demonstrations in large cities was caused by disappointment with the government's social policy, the cutback of social expenditures not conforming to the paternalist expectations of the majority of the populace. From the ideological point of view this discontent was expressed in demands to restore Russia's Great Power status, limit migration, execute a national policy providing advantages and social benefits to Russians. Externally the social tension and national inferiority complex manifested in the increase of xenophobia and anti-western sentiment. The political crisis in Russia and the change of political course by the new Ukrainian leadership created a serious danger for the Russian authoritarian regime. Putin's propaganda managed to channel and redirect the growing social discontent in Russia onto Ukraine, by presenting the events there not as a movement against Yanukovich's corrupt government but as an illegitimate revolt , «fascist», nationalist and anti-Russian in spirit. The consequent annexation of the Crimea caused a powerful patriotic upsurge, dismissing the past complaints against the acting authorities. The popularity and approval of Putin's policy have reached maximum levels (85%). However Western sanctions and the reciprocation of the Russian authorities impaired the country's economy which caused a gradual decrease of support of the plans to invade Donbass using the Russian army and a more cautious approach to Putin's political course. The failure of democratic transformation lead to the reanimation of conservative imitation traditionalism relying on mechanisms of negative identity and suppression of social solidarity bases alternative to the authorities as well as the weakening of moral and human capital.
Авторы приходят к выводу о том, что рассмотренные подходы являются основой для теоретических исследований современного феномена национализма и методологической базой для практических решений в области национальной политики ; The article presents different approaches to the understanding of the phenomenon of nationalism. In modern science there is no common approach to the concept of the origin of nationalism. There are diametrically opposite assessments of this phenomenon. In this regard, an attempt to consider the origins of nationalism in the light of the fundamental nationalism theories is made. The key points on the origin of nationalism are given by researchers of communication theory. They say communication theory is modernist and considers nationalism as the main condition for the transformation of traditional type societies to modern ones. The basic tenet and postulate of this transformation is the transformation of the communication quality in the existing community. Modern trends differing from the basic research methods and perception of the origins of nationalism were formed at the end of the XX century. One of them is primordialism. According to the main principles of pri-mordialism, any nation is an objective reality with its unique qualities. Any individual's belonging to the nation depends on phenotypic peculiarities and is given at birth. The representatives of constructivist direction consider the phenomenon of nationalism not as a pre-given objective reality, but as a result of human activity and as an artificial social construct. The functionalists believe that many social phenomena are functional, if they ensure the stability of social system. According to their view point nationalism is a consequence of a new type of society formation, standard education and sustainable cultural values. The representatives of Marxist approach assume that nationalism arises with the evolution of economic and social inequality. As for the instrumentalist approach, it proclaims cultural values to be the means for achieving the goals by the elite groups. Nationalism ideology is one of the mechanisms in the struggle for power and material resources. The authors come to the conclusion that the covered approaches are both the basis for theoretical studies of the phenomenon of modern nationalism and also methodological basis for practical solutions in the area of national policy

; The paper studies a kind of "national-liberal" theory developed by V. E. Cheshikhin, Russian publicist of the beginning of XX century who lived in Riga. Cheshikhin's articles in the press and documents of the two archives became the material. The stages of progressive nationalism development (provincialism, pan-Russism, pan-Slavism), the origins of Russian national-liberalism in literature (A. S. Pushkin and F. M. Dostoevsky), the relationship between nationalism and cosmopolitanism are commented. V. E. Cheshikhin's attitude to political phenomena (reform of the state apparatus, the Slavic movement, the Jewish question, Russian relations with foreigners and so on) is characterised. The attention is paid to Cheshikhin's attempts to implement his ideas of "cosmopolitan nationalism" in practice by creating Russian National Liberal Party in Riga, participation in the elections to the State Duma of the first convocation, offering its program for the hypothetical association of Peaceful Renovators (progressives), right-wing and left-wing Cadets and also for the National democratic "People Party" set up in 1914. The author concludes that the emergence of Cheshikhin's theory is a consequence of the specific state of ethnic relations in the Baltic provinces of the Russian Empire, as well as of the extravagance of its author.
Patriotism, nationalism, imperialism should never be confused, though these terms are correlated with each other. Nationalism is badly aggravated, effagerated patriotism. Imperialism is a form of nationalism, elevated to the rank of the state politics.
; The article discusses the role of the Social-Darwinism in discourse of modern political philosophy. Frank and comes to some conclusions about the influence and importance of Social-Darwinism for the different forms of liberal ideology.
Анализируется термин «национализм»; показана вариативность его трактовок; делается вывод о том, что специфика современных проявлений национализма позволяет рассматривать данную идеологию с позиций инструментального подхода в контексте политических технологий = The article analyses the concept of «nationalism» and gives a variety of interpretations of the term. The article explores the ideological origins of Ukrainian radical nationalism, the formation and evolution of far-right political forces in post-Communist Ukraine, and the ideology of contemporary radical right-wing Ukrainian parties. Ukrainian far-right nationalism originated in the 1920s-30s. Its political embodiment was the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) which operated in Eastern Poland. Ideological foundation of the OUN was the concept of integral nationalism elaborated by Dmytro Dontsov. The OUN proclaimed the creation of Ukrainian sovereign state as its most important goal. The characteristic features of the ideology of Ukrainian radical far-right nationalism of that era were the priority of the interests of the Ukrainian nation, Russophobia, anti-communism, anti-liberalism, and the cult of power. Modern Ukrainian radical nationalists have adopted many of these concepts. In the 1990s, a number of extreme right-wing organizations emerged in Ukraine that declared themselves heirs of the traditions of Ukrainian nationalists of the first half of the XXth century. Some of the newly created parties tend towards integral nationalism, while others tend towards social nationalism, which combines ethnic nationalism with the idea of social justice. At the same time, all Ukrainian radical nationalists are characterized by an ethnic interpretation of the nation, a desire to create a mono-ethnic Ukrainian state, a negative attitude towards Russia and Russians, anti-communism, and commitment to the "third way" in economy. Critical of European liberal values, the Ukrainian far-right radicals are nonetheless in favor of Ukraine joining the EU and NATO, hoping that Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic integration will distance it from Russia. Ukrainian radical nationalists actively participated in Euromaidan 2013-2014 and the overthrow of Victor Yanukovych's regime. However, they have never (with the exception of the 2012 parliamentary elections) achieved any significant success in the elections to the Verkhovna Rada. Only a part of the population of Galicia votes for them. At the same time, some ideas previously put forward by the Ukrainian far right have in recent years to a certain extent entered the ideological baggage of respectable pro-European right-wing parties in Ukraine. Thus, the ideological and political influence of the Ukrainian far-right nationalists is more significant than it would be possible to assume based only on their electoral support.
Ukranian nationalism cannot be regarded as a normal result of the development of the public outlook in the Ukraine. It is a specific Galitian ideology based on the priority of group and ethnic interests over human rights. This ideology can be firmly established with forcible methods only and is incompatible with democracy. Nationalistic tendencies are dangerous for the formation of the Ukraine`s political system, its international situation and relations with Russia. ; Ukranian nationalism cannot be regarded as a normal result of the development of the public outlook in the Ukraine. According to the author, ethno-political conflicts of the late XX early XXI centuries clearly demonstrate a dramatic intensification of ethnic consolidation and mobilization processes. T.Polyannikov is not disposed to consider nationalism as mass state of mind characteristic only of the world system's periphery. He regards today's activation of ethno-nationalist consciousness as a world-wide phenomenon. The article pays a particular attention to the study of a difficult interrelation between «postmodern» nationalism and the process of globalization, values of liberalism and political democracy. T.Polyannikov believes that the appearance of a «new» nationalism at the confines of the XXI century constitutes a rather natural, although quite dangerous and fraught with many risks, factor of a general process of global democratization.

; This article presents a problem of the germ of Russian nationalism, interpretation thereof, specific features, content and evolution from the nascent stage until now. By presentation of main milestones of ideas of Russian thinkers, statesmen, essay writers, and politicians the authors arrive at a comprehensive picture of different views of alpha and omega of Russian nationalism and its place as a component of the «Russian Idea». Authors recognize the Russian nationalism's right of existence, at the same time, they clearly differentiate between the enlightened nationalism oriented toward the Christian spiritual ideal and the unchristian nationalism from pagan to liberal democratic one which either reduces itself to ethnic chauvinism, or restricts the Russian national idea within the bounds of the European post-Christian world.
; Contemporary political processes in Russia and in the world put the scientific community in need for deep interdisciplinary analysis of nationalism.
