Die Entwicklung der Säuglingssterblichkeit in Deutschland ist bisher für das 19. Jahrhundert
insgesamt nur mangelhaft und für den Zeitraum vor 1871 lediglich kleinräumig dokumentiert.
Mit der Aufbereitung der von den Behörden der damaligen deutschen Staaten zusammengestellten
Zahlen wird hier zunächst eine neue statistische Grundlage geschaffen. Die rekonstruierte
nationale Zahlenreihe (ab 1826) belegt eine vergleichsweise hohe Säuglingssterblichkeit
mit geringen Fortschritten bis zur Wende des 20. Jahrhunderts. Der Einfluss der Faktoren
Urbanisierung und Industrialisierung wird nicht bestritten, die Auswertung der unterschiedlichen
regionalen Muster und Entwicklungstrends führt aber zu einer neuen Gewichtung. Demnach
waren die Lebens- und Arbeitsverhältnisse auf dem Lande von erheblicher Bedeutung.
Die Logik des Zusammenhangs von Fertilität und Säuglingssterblichkeit wird für die
Epoche des nachhaltigen Fertilitätsrückgangs anders eingeschätzt als für die vorausgehende.
Insgesamt werden die vorherrschenden Gewohnheiten und Einstellungen als ausschlaggebend
für die Überlebenschancen von Kleinkindern angesehen. Deshalb wird der Blick auf die
aufgeklärte Öffentlichkeit und auf die Behörden gelenkt. Bemühungen dieser Kreise
um einen Wandel waren insbesondere im Südwesten zu verzeichnen, wo angesichts der
teilweise dramatischen Verhältnisse relativ früh ein Problembewusstsein entstand.
Zu einer abschließenden Bewertung dieser Vorgänge bedarf es weiterer historischer
Forschungen auf regionaler Ebene.

Vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die Entstehung der Naturheilkunde aus der Wasserheilkunde und ihre weitere Entwicklung. Sie beschäftigt sich mit den wichtigen Personen, die der Naturheilkunde nahestanden, der Vereinsentwicklung, den damaligen Veröffentlichungen und den Heilanstalten, die entstanden. Desweiteren wird die Haltung der Regierungsbehörden der neuen Heilmethode gegenüber dargestellt. In der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts waren es vor allem Laien, die sich der neuen Heilmethode zuwandten. Der Gymnasiallehrer Eucharius Oertel gründete 1832 in Ansbach den ersten Verein Deutschlands in diesem Bereich. Seit Ende der vierziger Jahre unterstützten auch vermehrt Ärzte die Entwicklung der Naturheilkunde. Der Mediziner Lorenz Gleich präge 1849 die Begriffe "Naturheilkunde", "Naturheilverfahren" usw. Obwohl Bayern eine wichtige Rolle spielte, sind die Bemühungen der die Naturheilkunde Ausübenden insgesamt fehlgeschlagen, da sie von Seiten der bayerischen Staatsregierung nur in geringem Maß Förderung erhielten. ; The subject of this thesis is the development of naturopathy out of hydropathy and its further development. It treats the most important representatives of naturopathy as well as organizations, publications, and sanatoria. Further, the attitude of the authorities towards the new method is discussed. Originally, in the first half of the 19th century, it were mainly laymen who adopted it. The first society for hydropathy in Germany was founded in 1832 by the grammar-school teacher Eucharius Oertel in Ansbach. In the late 1840-ies also doctors began to promote the new method. The medic Lorenz Gleich coined in 1849 the terms 'Naturheilkunde' and 'Naturheilverfahren' etc. This illustrates that Bavaria played an important role in the development of naturopathy. Nevertheless, the efforts to promote it came to fail because of the lack of support through the Bavarian government.

Ausgehend von Überlegungen zur Notwendigkeit einer regionalen Wirtschaftsgeschichte befaßt sich der Beitrag einleitend mit dem Problem einer sinnvollen Definition und Klassifizierung regionaler Strukturen. Um das Abweichungsmuster des Wirtschaftswachstums in Deutschland während des frühen neunzehnten Jahrhunderts zu erfassen, vergleicht die Untersuchung vor allem drei geographische Gebiete (die landwirtschaftlichen Ostprovinzen Preußens; die einzelnen Regierungsbezirke Bayerns; die preußischen Westprovinzen). Die demo-ökonomische Analyse setzt die unterschiedliche Bevölkerungsweise in den drei Regionen in bezug zu der jeweiligen ökonomischen Basis. Im einzelnen wird das Bevölkerungswachstum in den deutschen Staaten beschrieben; die unterschiedlichen Geburtenziffern werden in ihren möglichen Bedingungsfaktoren erörtert (Heiratsalter in den Regionen, Heiratsziffer). Entsprechende Analysen werden auch mit Bezug auf Mortalität und Sterblichkeitsziffer durchgeführt. Der Verfasser resümiert, daß sich die Unterschiede in der wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung des frühen neunzehnten Jahrhunderts deutlich im demographischen Bereich widerspiegeln; die demographischen Größen ihrerseits beeinflußten den wirtschaftlichen Wachstumsprozeß. Der dem Beitrag beigefügte Kommentar (Richard H. Tilly) würdigt Forschungsansatz und Forschungsergebnisse, weist aber auch auf unbeantwortete Fragen. (JL)

"Embedded in the Rostock research group of historical demography 'A History of Aging Societies', the authors examined the demographic transition of Mecklenburg in the 19th century. On the basis of statistical population data from the Tate 18th up to the early 20th century, which survived in the form of statistics manuals and census listings, the increase of life expectancy and mortality decline was analysed for the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. In an optimization procedure the mortality conditions were calculated with the 'Generalised Inverse Projection' (GIP), a mathematic and statistic method using the historical birth, death and population totals. The results gained from the study allowed an integration of this north German province into the European context and was used for the comparison with its Scandinavian neighbours Denmark and Sweden, which were the forerunner countries of historical mortality decline. The study showed that 19th century Mecklenburg rather followed the Scandinavian scheme of low mortality, in contrast to other German regions. Little correlation exists between the favourable historical development of mortality in Mecklenburg-Schwerin and the relatively high mortality rates in today's Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania." "The article examines the historical development of infant mortality in the Hanseatic city of Rostock, with a special focus on the question of how socio-economic factors influenced infant mortality in the early 19th century. Compared with the rest of Germany, the city exhibited an exceedingly low infant mortality level, in particular in the first third of the century. Our analyses show that the occupation of the father had a significant influence on the survival probability of a child in the first year of life in the early 19th century. Newborn children of fathers in lower ranked occupations exhibited a greater mortality risk in the first year of life than the offspring of fathers with occupations of higher status. The analyses are based on the registries of burials and baptisms of St. James's Church (Jakobikirche) in Rostock, which are largely preserved and much of which has been digitalised. Based on these individual data, this is the first event history analysis model conducted in the context of infant mortality in a German city in the 19th century. This article is also the first to reveal Rostock infant mortality rates for the entire 19th century according to sex, thus closing two research gaps." (author's abstract)

»The people« (Volk) and its constitutions actually seem more than questionable: on the one hand nothing is more dubious than the historical conditions and possibilities of this political subject, which pretends its being in so many places; on the other hand »the people« is invented, constructed, fictionalized, homogenized, imagined and moreover, a supposed substance of »the people« is implored or rejected by attributions. Thus it is this object - »the people« and its creation (production) - which requires an exposition. This article deals with the political subject of »the people« in the specific forms and structures of its appearance and analyzes its historical and epistemological genealogy in the 19thConceptions of natural law tried to show that »the people« is still in the state of nature (Sieyes). But they also evoked »the people« as a population and hence as a technological and administrative object. Following this the transformations of those discourses that aim at a possible unity of »the people« have to be introduced. For the main question is: Which part of »the people« presents itself and which part is represented? Quantitative Explorationen aus bildungshistorischer Perspektive' (Peter Lang Verlag, Reihe Hochschulschriften, Frankfurt a.M. 1995). Der Forschungstand zu diesem Thema ist in der internationalen Diskussion nicht zwingend konsensfähig. Die z.T. gegensätzlichen Forschungsbefunde erstrecken sich dabei im wesentlichen auf drei thematische Felder: den Alphabetisierungsdiskurs im engeren Sinne, die schulhistorische Diskussion um das Verhältnis von Alphabetisierung und Schulentwicklung und die bildungsökonomische Auseinandersetzung um den Zusammenhang von Industrialisierung und Alphabetisierung. Speziell für die preußischen Verhältnisse verbleibt die Identifizierung und Gewichtung der Determinanten des Analphabetismus jedoch im wesentlichen auf der Ebene der Spekulation. Selbst die Deskription des preußischen Alphabetisierungsverlaufs im 19. Jahrhundert ist aufgrund der bislang nur unvollständig bearbeiten Quellenlage uneingelöst. Our research confirms for Prussia too: the early industrialization has not hindered the progress of literacy. On the contrary: especially in the regions, which were not integrated in the economic transformation, an atypical stagnation of the literacy level can be observed. Apart from the economic resources in the local context, with its importance for the progress of schooling, the homogeneity of culture and language proves to be another central factor of the literacy process through schooling. Nevertheless: the history of literacy and the history of schooling are just not the same. Even in the 19th century literacy and schooling are social phenomenons, which are related but not identical. The difference is particularly explainable through the hegemonic activities of rival social groups, which bring out literal ideologies and short-term fluctuations of reading and writing, with considerable effects for the literacy level of the masses.
