The case study is part of a research that analyzes the potentiality of historical maps as a tool to support the knowledge and protection of the landscape. The main interest of this article is to highlight data qualities and communicative capacities of 19th century cartography of Sardinia also in relation to the current state of the art. The drawing of landscape and territory at this time shows an interesting ability to combine scientific rigor and perceptive component that will have its maximum expression in 1845 with the work of the general Alberto Ferrero Della Marmora. Starting from a critical analysis of the archive documents, the methodology adopted in this case study needs the drawing/design of a geo-referenced database aimed at a comparison between historical maps and the series of aerial surveys made available by Cartography Service of the Sardinia Region. The subject of this analysis are some interesting drawings that describe the system of "Royal salt works" of Cagliari designed by Piedmontese government in the first half of the nineteenth century, surveyed and represented by military officers. The territorial data recorded in the examined maps shows an interesting compatibility with the most recent acquisitions and allows a diachronic analysis of the transformations. To this end – putting together the high precision of current survey and representation methods with information and immediacy of historical cartographic production - the drawings are analyzed, elaborated and "communicated" through graphics models able to express by signs the complexity of a stratified landscape.
The aim here is to present Rome's conception and vision of patronage in Latin America at the beginning of the 19th century. From Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula, the question of patronage is read in a purely political key, according to a political use of religion. Rome, on the other hand, clearly had another approach to the question. Its reading key was twofold: eminently religious, but also inevitably political in its implications. In any case, the religious need was truly primary over the political one. The religious question is confused with the political one in relation to the legitimacy of political power. The ultimate question is very essential: who legitimately holds power? In the long 19th century, two authorities, that of the state and that of the Church, confronted each other regarding decision-making powers in the Church, who can decide what. If the Holy See is not at ease with constitutional regimes, this does not prevent it from operating according to its religious purposes: ultimately it has no difficulty with the institution of patronage, but with the way it is implemented.

In his Notes of a Journey through France and Italy (1824-26), William Hazlitt shows how Italy was perceived abroad at the beginning of the 19th century. Though still divided in reigns, its natural and artistic beauties seemed to anticipate its political unification. Hazlitt describes the merits and flaws of the cities he visited and of the people he met, making a keen and surprising portrait of 'Italy before Italy'.
; This research questions the material and cultural aspects of a Liberty Spencer construction, which is examined here as a historical document. This clothing was part of a wedding dress and was used about 12 October 1912, the wedding day, by a 15 years old girl. The weeding took place on the border of Minas Gerais, southeast region of Brazil. This research starts from material culture perspective to develop into the fields of history, considering economic, political and cultural aspects of the platinense society. That was a rural and traditional society on the beginning of republican system (so called Republica Velha), the same period of the Art Nouveau artistic movement, named Liberty movement in Italy. Thus, the thesis questions the relationship between society, its vesture system and its link with occidental fashion, considering the object history. This thesis is structured on five axes: the person who owned the object; the productive environment; the dressmakers professional qualification environment; the press; and finally, the object. This research is based on several sources: iconographic, census, accounting books, fashion newspapers and magazines, technical manuals of clothes manufacturing (modeling, cutting and sewing), political and economic periodicals, archives, oral testimonies, artifacts of the period, raw materials, the philological reconstruction of the object, etc. The main object is to understand the process and the raw materials, commercialization, manufacturing, cost, fashion and social hierarchy problematics that this artifact represents in the various manufacturing stages, of cutting and assembly.
; The essay intends to examine the characteristics of the Milanese notary profession in the delicate moment of transition from the ancient regime to the subsequent Napoleonic age, when the ideology of the Revolution, exported by the Napoleonic armies, involved, in the specific notary sector, the abandonment of the heterogeneous functions that had characterized the eighteenth-century notaries, in a continuous balance between 'private' and 'public', and the affirmation of a series of new, fundamental principles. With the "legal revolution" that Napoleon introduced in Italy in the field of professions, an unprecedented transformation was achieved, even in the notarial sector. The suppression of professional colleges and corporations put an end to the age-old monopoly of qualifications, now liberalized both in relation to private and public activities. Any distinction between noble and bourgeois professions was canceled with the formal birth of the liberal professions. In particular, the case of Milan will be studied: Milan, after having experienced some important changes at the end of the ancien régime, such as the birth of the public archive (1775), the Joseph II's reform of the recruitment of notaries and the Regolamento generale per i notari della Lombardia austriaca (1794), lived, first as the capital of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy and then in the political reality of the Lombardo-Venetian Kingdom, an intense season of lively debates on the opportunity and methods of innovating a profession, for some time exercised in a protean manner by a class, anything but compact, in which very different operators were distinguished from each other in terms of culture and social origin. The Regolamento sul Notariato of the Kingdom of Italy, published on 17 June 1806, took up the discipline of the Regolamento generale per i notari della Lombardia austriaca and differed in some points from the French notarial law. Still in force after the fall of Napoleon, the Regolamento sul Notariato of 1806 was also an alternative model to French law in the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, where, for a certain period, there was discussion on whether to maintain or abolish the notary profession. The Austrian civil code, applied in the Lombardo-Venetian Kingdom, did not regulate the figure of the notary by law and the Austrian domination did not leave great autonomy to the notaries. However, without apparently suffering the frenetic political upheavals of the first half of the nineteenth century, the Lombard notaries proved to be an industrious category, capable of adapting to the new times, no longer held back in their social and professional rise by the constraints imposed by the ancient society regime.Despite the numerous studies conducted, in recent and less recent times, on notaries in the modern age, the subject is far from exhausted and, thanks to the rich documentary heritage preserved in the archives, it is possible and desirable to expand research on the specific reality of the nineteenth-century Lombard notary, which, in a period so full of changes, was going through an important process of professionalization. This process, after the Restoration, was defined in a precise manner and notaries became fully qualified professionals capable of aspiring to the most important city offices.
The author talks about the repercussions of the Italian Risorgimento with regard to the Italian refugees that sought asylum in the islands of Malta. He talks about the impact that the refugees had on the island's culture and way of life. Schiavone also gives a general and historical background of Malta at the time (19th century). He talks about the island's capital city and its exports among other topics. ; N/A
; peer-reviewed
This paper aims at presenting some health maps of a historical population. The studies on the health status of past populations are usually focused on the causes of death. Our purpose is to present some descriptive analyses on non-deadly diseases. The present work focuses on the province of Friuli (north-eastern Italy) in the second half of the nineteenth century. The used sources are military call-up records. We collected about 300,000 records relative to military recruitment that took place between 1866 and 1909 (birth cohorts 1846-1890). Our main concern was the health status of the 20-year male population, and its association with environmental, socio economic and genetic factors. Generally speaking, we observe that the northern mountain area was the most advantaged, while young adults from the eastern and western parts of the province were the most disadvantaged. A lot of factors and causes contributed to determine the spatial distribution of specific diseases in Friuli, whilst others remain unknown because simple descriptive analyses are not sufficient to highlight them all. In particular, the distribution of the thyroidal hypertrophy was almost certainly due to the water quality, while the distribution of dental caries was probably related to genetic and dietary factors.
The thesis is about the representation of the rebel crowds in the Italian literature in the 19th century. We consider the contributions of social sciences, from Le Bon to the lombrosian school of Scipio Sighele and Pasquale Rossi, as well as Freud, until some more contemporary sociologists, like Reich, Ortega y Gasset, Canetti, Allport, Turner etc; but the research focuses on the novels and the short stories, which are conceived in Italie, when the fight for the national unity tries, without success, to transform the political revolution in a national revolution, according to the expression of Nievo. Manzoni standardizes de model of the representation of the rebel crowds, which will be followed by Nievo, with some important variations. Therefore, the influence of Zola adds to the Manzoni's one. It will dominate, on the one hand, the idea of a rational crowd, that is a potential revolutionary subject (the , scapigliati, Valera, De Amicis, etc), on the other hand the one of the pessimism and of the predetermined destiny of the masses (Verga). Finally, Gabriele D'Annunzio, in his novels and short stories, fluctuates between the fascination for the savage side of the crowds and his aristocratic contempt.
