By way of a chronological analysis of the essays of Christa Wolf -one of the best known authors from socialist Germany since the 60s until now- and of her diaries, this thesis goes in pursuit of the main matters of reflection of the author related to the reality in the Democratic Republic of Germany. It particularly points at those that directly deal with the role of intellectuals and women in society and with the changes that she experienced in her own political engagement as the government position became more and more radical, especially during and after German Reunification. Four narrations, quite different in time and subject, have been selected to verify the reflection of these themes in her literary work, as well as their evolution in time. The analysis and commentary of the essays, diaries and narrations shape the four central chapters of the thesis, which takes them as a source of information in order to define the particular search of an alternative option in front of reality. As hypothesis, it is assumed that this search is defined by the criticism to dualism originated by inherited extreme rationalist mentality, and it is based on the language as its main manipulating instrument. The verification of this hypothesis confirms the work of Wolf as an example of coherence and it reflects a constant effort to assimilate life and literature with a deep pacifist and conciliating will.
From a historical and literary perspective, the proposed work a ims to trace the ideological foundations around the myth of the Iberian in certain figures of the Franco ́s intelligentsia, and its impact on diplomatic relations between the two nations in the forties. ; In recent years there has been a growing scholarly interest in the rural settlements located in the regions of Laconia and Messenia, commonly referred to as perioikic communities. Despite an existing partial consensus concerning the economic and military connections between the perioikic communities and the Spartan polis, the actual status of such settlements still remains a matter of considerable controversy. This paper adopts a semantic-lexicological approach in an attempt to outline the discursive connotations of the term períoikoi and its cognates as employed in the classical sources. Such analysis aims to contribute to the ongoing historiographical debates, many of which overlook the in situ occurrences of the term in the actual sources and its various connotations. The paper specifically explores the linguistic and semantic fields of the term períoikos and its cognates as first recorded in Herodotus' Histories.
This work is study on the recception of Shakespeare from 1939 until 1975 (Franco´s dictatorship in Spain). The study starts in the canon observed in the Shakespere´s performances from 1772 until 1936, from the very first productions, to continue analysing Shakespere´s theatre at Primo de Rivera´s dictatorship and the 2nd. Spanish Republic. This introduction will guide us to see possible influences when studying the Francoist canon and its way of performing Shakespeare´s plays. I am also deepening in the cultural and political background, determining which was the role placed by censhorship and ideology in Spain. There is also an interesting account on the Shakespeare´s performances in Fascist countries at the same time to see possible parallelisms. For the study of Shakespeare´s canon I have been using the press at that time, as well as censorship files and photo collections. Bearing all that mind I am conforming some conclusions on Shakespeare´s reception at the Spa nish National Theatres.
The zapatismo chiapaneco is a sociopolítical movemen that has used widely and successfully speech as a combat weapon, in an attempt to construct a statement that was favorable to gain the social support of the Mexican people. This speech has been, in addition, eminently literary, whit the statements and novels that there his spokesperson, the subcommander Marcos has signed. This way, we see how the impact of the EZLN has been notable in the Mexican literature and in many other countries. In this article we propose to investigate the impact that Juan Villoro has had in the work of one of the most famous and respected Mexican writers, as well as to reveal the evolution of his political position before this movement in the last twenty years.
; In 2005 an explosion occurred in an old building of the military brigade Mariscal Zavala in Ciudad de Guatemala discovered a secret archive of the Guatemalan Policía Nacional. We will study the similarities and differences of both views focusing on the evolution to a kind of description of the past more personal and intimate that both works offer to the public.
Abstract This PhD Thesis, entitled "The Translation of Ideological Discourse in Franco's Spain", aims to focus on the relationship between censorship and translation through the comparative analysis of nine English and French novels translated into Spanish and published in Spain between 1939 and 1975 (i.e. under Franco's regime). The study attempts to unveil any evidence of textual manipulation in the Spanish version of the analyzed novels, identifying —where possible— specific patterns of censorship behavior. The hypothesis postulated in the study proceeds on the premise that the Francoist censorship system used to act upon definite and standardized criteria, and predicts that the strategies employed by censors will vary depending on the ideological content of each novel. In order to corroborate this hypothesis, a corpus of nine novels has been collected and classified into three different thematic groups. The first group includes three novels characterized by their sexual content: The Last of the Wine, by Mary Renault, Sapho, by Alphonse Daudet, and The Anti-Death League, by Kingsley Amis. The second group comprises three novels that contain irreligionist material: Point Counter Point, by Aldous Huxley, La Faute de l'Abbé Mouret, by Émile Zola, and The Monk, by Matthew Gregory Lewis. And the third group comprises three books characterized by their unorthodox political content: Nineteen Eighty Four, by George Orwell, Les Yeux d'Ezequiel sont ouverts, by Raymond Abellio, and The Invisible Writing, de Arthur Koestler. The methodological framework designed to analyze these novels combines quantitative and qualitative analysis and is based on theoretical contributions from Tymoczko (2002), Lambert & van Gorp (1985) and Leuven-Zwart (1989). This model of analysis —which is also inspired by the structure developed in Rioja Barrocal's work (2008)—, is organized into three stages: a contextualization stage, which describes the socio-cultural and historical context of each novel; an analysis stage, which explores the censorship mechanisms at use via (i) a quantitative analysis of the strategies identified (omission, substitution, amplification and rewriting) and (ii) a qualitative study that allows us to further explore the characterization of censoring patterns; and a reception stage, where the whole information output from each novel is contrasted and synthesized in order to draw preliminary conclusions regarding patterns of censorship behavior. Furthermore, this model of analysis is complemented with extra-textual material, such as documents from the Regime's censorship authority held at the Administration General Archives (AGA) and interviews with historians, researchers and literary translators who offer relevant testimonies for our study. The overall results show that in the group of novels that emphasize sexual and religious content, omission is the predominant strategy, reaching, respectively, 79% and 64% of the censorship marks detected. In contrast, the political group displays a more balanced use of strategies, as omission accounts for only 42% of the censored extracts, whereas rewriting is found in 32%, substitution in 15% and amplification in 11% of the extracts. These data reflect the variation found in the patterns of censoring behaviour for each group: Francoist censors tended to delete and neutralize sexual and religious content contrary to the regime doctrine, whereas in the cases where subverting political content is at stake, a clear tendency to rewrite and generate new information alien to the original text can be observed. The main purpose of this strategy is to divert the ideological component of the source text in order to create a new favourable discourse towards the Francoist regime. These results reveal a peculiar and latent type of censorship, here coined as "metacensorship", which goes far beyond the traditional methods, aiming not to omit and neutralize content, but rather to use and shape it with propaganda purposes.
; Although in the generation of fifty there are women poets, women's poetry makes its appearance well into the eighties (helped by editors and politicians). We intend to show how women of these decades see to the female characters in the GrecoRoman tradition. Also how the evolution of this lyrical feminism occurs, will show through the temporal development of his verses, where evidence, more or less explicitly, the refusal to accept as its own the anthropocentric roles imposed by a long masculine tradition.
; This article is going to show the beginnings of Eliodoro Puche Felices in the field of literature, through their education, their early work, published and unpublished, and his first experiences in the exercise of his literary practice. ; The literature written during the Spanish Civil war and its Postwar has in common to have been censored by the New Regime. Most of the works of the 1940s were written according to fees set by the Franco Government. Nevertheless, from 1945, texts of social style began to appear, some of them created by women hardly remembered today. In this article we have analyzed the work of Dolores Medio, A Teacher's Diary, from the context of their creation and reflection of the Civil war through a realistic fiction.
Abstract: Homosexuality was articulated around two ideas during the first part of the Cold War: heroic assumptions of masculinity –subordinators of alternative masculinities- and the frontier as place and myth. The heroic masculinity –long ago hegemonic- and the homosexuality of the fictional characters analysed go hand in hand in a time when medical, legal, political and mass-media discourses meant to separate them. We can see that union in one of the most man-dominated places in American tradition: the frontier, be it real, symbolic or imaginary. These characters cannot get away from the patriarchal positions which oppress them as homosexuals. Therefore, that masculinity they long to hold onto does not guarantee their integrity as human beings, except in the categorical frontier with reality itself. For these fictions, written at the threshold of postmodernity, appeal to its disintegrating and liberating processes.
; By their social quality and personal category, most of the time, the Countesses of Paredes de Nava were important ladies at the Spanish Court. As they were working in the Palace, they shared the privacy of the Royal Family, and they were also part of the political transformations of the moment. Ladies-in-waiting, sometimes First Ladies-in-waiting of the Queen, the Countesses of Paredes were several times witnessed of the queens' lives and preserved their privacy. Some familiar circumstances projected them, lots of times, as owners of their aristocratic title, in their own right. The biographic profiles presented here, try to understand the role of these Countesses in their family's politic, and the complex social environment where they developed their activities.

; Sandra Cisnero's novel Caramelo or puro cuento (2002) reveals the unspoken history of four generations of the Reyes family, all of them influenced by their continuous comings and goings between Spain, Mexico and the USA. The investigation aims to examining the strategies that the protagonist and narrator uses to question hegemonic discourses about her cultural identity. To this end, we will analyze the way the narrator places herself in a third space, an uncertain and uncomfortable territory, but from which she can resignificate the binary system that regulates the notion of cultural difference. We will also study the possibilities that the hybrid narration of the novel offers to question authority, not only from a political, but also from a narrative point of view.
When history interferes in fiction, the generic boundaries are broken. From playful fiction we go to historic seriousness, and vice versa. In the dictionary, the word "History" is ambiguous. It is at the same time a set of real events, chronologically dated and localized and therefore necessarily circumscribed and a way of representing the real or reality by pretending to tell what might have happened or might happen. Maghreb novelists will find in this semantic interpenetration a benefit so that their narration meet a History institutionally official. They have been developing, shortly before, a bulimia for the History that their elders and predecessors have not well grown. Even if they were not primarily seeking "The Absent of history" (Certeau 1973), they will pretend to be teachers to expose, under the generic label "novel", a critical part of the history of Morocco by the end of the 19th century and the 20th century, by mixing historical personalities and characters at the service of fiction. Marthe Robert defines the novel in these terms: "A revolutionary and bourgeois genre, that is democratic by choice and animated by a totalitarian spirit, making it break barriers and borders, the novel is free, free to the extent of being arbitrary to the last degree of anarchy" (1972: 14). It is in this spirit that we will try to see how History, with a capital H, is exploited in "the Old Lady of the Riad'' by Fouad Laroui and in "Pilgrimage of an Artist in love'' by Khatibi and how this transfer of historic references is operated into a narrative account apparently belonging to the fictional regime.
