Czechoslovakia was subject to authoritarian rule of the Communist Party since 1948 and any research had to comply with Marxism-Leninism as the sole acceptable scientific method. Czech art history (as different form art criticism) lacked any experience with Marxism. Around and after 1950, there continued the quest for a method that would be both compatible with the scholarly tradition following the Vienna School and acceptable to the ideologues of the political regime. Jaromír Neumann found the best result in his invention of "formalist iconology" around 1960: a strange hybrid of Panofsky's post-war iconology and the late Dvořák's "spiritual art history" has served Czech art history well until today.
Art defamed by National Socialism as »degenerate«, referring to supposedly »primitive cultures«, was considered »antifascist« in the Federal Republic of Germany, but whose colonial racisms were reflected? How were these cultural differences negotiated in the art of the FRG from 1960 to 1990? Kea Wienand discusses to what extent artists such as Joseph Beuys, Sigmar Polke, and Ulrike Rosenbach, among others, continued, altered, or criticized primitivism after 1960. She illustrates how beliefs about artistry, sexuality, gender, and history were thematized via images of cultural difference.

(ICG)
The essays, artistic pieces, and interviews gathered in this anthology explore both the role of art and visual culture as well as artistic practices in contemporary feminist movements. The art historians, literary scholars, artists, activists, and students and scholars of American Studies included in this collection examine contemporary art and artivism and its capacity to inspire change, reformulate feminist ideas, and reimagine feminist aesthetics. With contributions by young scholars, students, activists, and artists, the collection seeks to display a broad range of perspectives. Recurring themes are the ambivalent labeling of art and artistic or activist practices as 'feminist' as well as the role of intersectionality in feminism and art. This edited volume brings together the diverse strands of thought and practice that contemporary feminist art and culture embrace and hopes to contribute to ongoing discussions at the intersection of art and feminist politics. ; The essays, artistic pieces, and interviews gathered in this anthology explore both the role of art and visual culture as well as artistic practices in contemporary feminist movements.
