SummaryThis study analyses, for the dynamic economy of a typical less developed country (LDC), the significance for economic development over 30 years of gradual reductions in age-specific fertility rates (assumed to result from a government-supported birth reduction campaign).The computer results, using parameters typical of poorer LDCs, include the following:1. A modest birth control programme, costing perhaps 30 cents a year per head of national population, can raise average income over only 15 years by almost twice the percentage that it would rise without birth control;2. Such a birth control programme, including more exposed couples every year until half of them are practising contraception, yields an undiscounted return on cost of 13 times in 5 years and 80 times in 30 years;3. The value of permanently preventing the birth of a marginal infant is about twice an LDCs annual income per head;4. Without birth control, to achieve similar rises in income per head, the rate of productive innovation would have to be about 1½ times the typical rate assumed;5. Saving propensities would have to be from 2 to 3 times as great as are assumed typical if similar income increases per head are to be realized without birth control.The model employed uses age-specific death, fertility, and consumption rates for an annually changing age distribution of population. It also uses a national production function that takes into account the changing stocks and productivities of labour and capital, saving propensities that vary with disposable income and the rate of productive innovation. Consequently, it can trace, in more detail than any demographic–economic model yet described in the literature, the incidence of whatever fertility reductions may result from government or private birth control programmes.*

We propose deciles average income, deficit and natural resource rents as objective variables to measure politicians' economic performance. We begin by reviewing the literature linking politicians and their institutional choices to the macroeconomic environment. To continue, we review the relation between those macroeconomic variables and income percentiles. In order to evaluate how well they sum up politicians' performance, we then use the variables previously reviewed to throw a generalized least squares estimation from panel data in a set of countries. Our results point towards the possibility of using those variables to anchor an incentive contract for politicians.

PurposeThis article examines whether increasing the income of the poor – measured as the income of the lowest quintile – is more beneficial in reducing infant and child mortality rates compared with increases in average income. Given the global importance in reducing infant mortality, the value of this research is important to academics, policymakers and practitioners alike.Design/methodology/approachUsing a sample of 86 countries from 1995–2014 inclusive, our preferred estimation strategy uses an instrumental variable fixed-effects estimator.FindingsOur results propose that the elasticity of the income of the lowest quintile never exceeds that of average income. Therefore, if reducing infant and child mortality is a key policy goal, then boosting average income may be preferable to raising incomes at the lower end of the distribution.Originality/valueGiven these findings, we open a gateway for new literature to add to this unexplored area of research in the income and health relationship.

The purpose of this paper is to study what factors determined the average income growth and net migration at the municipal level in Sweden between 1981-1990. Our results suggest a negative correlation between the initial level of average income and the subsequent average income growth, which can be interpreted in terms of conditional convergence. We also find that local government policy variables are important determinants of net migration and average income growth. However, there is no evidence to suggest that the presence of a university or a university college in the municipality affects local growth and mobility patterns. ; Med stöd från HSFR. This paper attempts to assess the extent of inclusivity in post-apartheid income growth by focusing on one intuitive part of the income distribution: the actual middle (or middle-income strata). If South African macro and social policy explicitly aims to be 'inclusive', it is important to know how the average [median] South African income level changed over the first fifteen years of democracy. Common summary measures of economic progress such as GDP per capita may mask the standard of living experienced by the majority of the population in any particular period. Tracking the progress in the middle strata of South Africa's income distribution provides a fresh perspective on the nature of economic progress in the country. This is against a worrying backdrop of rising income inequality post-1994 (Van der Berg and Louw, 2004; Hoogeveen and Özler, 2006; Leibbrandt et al, 2010). The paper is structured as follows. Section 2 motivates for the importance of focussing on the actual middle of the income distribution and highlights the emphasis on reducing income inequality within South African macroeconomic and social policy. Issues of comparability in the data and the choice of definition for the middle are discussed in section 3. Section 4 presents descriptive statistics relating to changes in incomes, and ends with a brief analysis of non-income measures of progress. The final section summarises the main findings and concludes.

Die Übersichtstabellen beruhen auf jährliche Publikationen des Bundesministeriums der Finanzen mit Daten zur Lohn- und Einkommenssteuer von Arbeitnehmern ("Datensammlung zur Steuerpolitik") und den mit dreijährigem Abstand vom Statistischen Bundesamt veröffentlichen Steuerstatistiken. Neben dem Jahresarbeitslohn (die Durchschnittswerte vergangener Jahre beruhen auf den Ergebnissen der Volkswirtschaftlichen Gesamtrechnungen; sie ergeben sich als Quotient der inländischen Bruttolohn- und gehaltssumme und der Zahl der inländischen Arbeitnehmer) enthalten die Tabellen jährliche Angaben zur Lohnsteuer, zum Solidaritätszuschlag, zur Steuer insgesamt, zu den Sozialabgaben, zu den Abgaben insgesamt und zu dem verfügbaren Jahresdurchschnittseinkommen von Arbeitnehmern. Die Tabellen sind nach Steuerklassen gegliedert.
Statistische Informationen über Einkommen bieten unterschiedliche Arbeitsgebiete im bundesstatistischen Berichtssystem. Der Bereich "Finanzen und Steuern" des Statistischen Bundesamtes liefert in dreijährigem Abstand Informationen über die personelle Verteilung der steuerbaren Einkünfte (laut Steuerrecht) und der Steuern darauf (Transfers). Erhebungseinheit ist hier der einzelne Steuerfall, die Erfassung der Einkünfte erfolgt beim Empfänger als Person (amtliche Erhebungen nach dem Individualzählverfahren und einem steuerrechtlichen Einkommensbegriff).
Die zusammenfassenden Übersichten zu den Einkommensteuerpflichtigen mit der Anzahl der Steuerpflichtigen (Einzelpersonen bzw. zusammen veranlagte Ehepaare mit dem Gesamtbetrag ihrer Einkünfte) und dem Gesamtbetrag der Einkünfte (Ergebnisse der Einkommensteuerstatistik) sind nach Größenklassen des Gesamtbetrags der Einkünfte differenziert, wobei die Lohn- und Einkommensteuerpflichtigen in einer einheitlichen Schichtung zusammengefasst sind. Allgemeiner Maßstab für die Zuordnung in der gemeinsamen Schichtung ist die Höhe des steuerlich definierten Gesamtbetrags der Einkünfte; dieser Bemessungsgrundlage entsprechen bei den nichtveranlagten Lohnsteuerpflichtigen die Einkünfte aus nicht-selbständiger Arbeit. Diese Schichtung stellt eine wesentliche Unterlage für die Analyse der Einkommensverteilung dar.
In fünf Übersichtstabellen werden schließlich die durchschnittlichen Wochenverdienste und Abzüge männlicher Facharbeiter im Produzierenden Gewerbe dargestellt. Unterschieden werden hinsichtlich des Familienstatus die Gruppen: ledig, ohne Kinder; verheiratet, ohne Kinder; verheiratet, 1 Kind; verheiratet, 2 Kinder; verheiratet, 3 Kinder.
In einer Übersichtstabelle sind die Steuerpflichtigen mit einem Gesamtbetrag der Einkünfte von 0, 5 (1,0) Mio. Euro und mehr zusammengefasst (Anzahl der Steuerpflichtigen, Gesamtbetrag der Einkünfte und durchschnittliche Einkünfte).
Zwei abschließende Übersichten fassen Angaben zu den Vermögen privater Haushalte zusammen.
