This transcript of a 1759 militia muster roll includes comapnies from Westchester and Suffolk Counties. The Westchester County muster roll includes many individuals from Connecticut and Long Island. Descriptions of the physical appearance of the soldiers are noted, along with their name, trade, and place of birth. Some of the individuals are clearly described having very dark skin coloring, suggesting they are African Americans or formerly enslaved people, or American Indians. The Westchester comapny was under the command of Captain Joshua Bloomer, with lieutenants Henry Bayeau and Joseph Bull. There were three companies from Suffolk County. The first company, commanded by Captain Gilbert Potter had lieutenants Joseph Brewster and Jesse Platt. The second company, captained by Barnabas Tuthill had lieutenants Daniel Gouldsmith and Daniel Griffen. The third company was captained by Stephen Sayre with lieutentants Elias Aasley and Jonathan Baker. Muster masters were George Muirson and Nathaniel Woodhull, who was probably the same General Nathaniel Woodhull considered a Revolutionary War martyr.

leyds-60-7436.pdf created from original pamphlet in the WJ Leyds Collection held in the Africana Section of the Stellenbosch University Library and Information Service. ; The object of the writer of these pages has been to present facts, and to point out evident deductions from those facts, but to state nothing on his own authority. Too often mere personal abuse has taken the place of reason in public discussions of the future of South Africa. The writer trusts that he has avoided this error; while by preserving his anonymity and by leaving the responsibility for statements of fact with official Blue Books and with those who are widely recognized as authorities on the subject, he hopes to gain an impersonal and unbiassed hearing for his views.
