This article looks at political factors in African countries that are pushing Africans to move to Western countries in search of greener pastures, as they are demonstrated in African novels. The novels to be considered for this discourse are Dirie and Miller's Desert Flower, Bulawayo's We Need New Names and Cole's Open City. While the discussion is on political issues pushing Africans to Western countries, when and where necessary, reference will be made to emigration to other countries, even within the Africa continent as well. The concepts of push factors, politics and African-Western migration are defined as part of the introductory section of this discourse. The subheadings of this discourse are introduction, analysis, and conclusion.

The main aim of this paper is to understand the evolution and transformation of North African migration systems since 1945 within a conceptual framework drawing on migration systems and transitional migration theory. The analysis shows how regional migration dynamics have been an integral part of more general political and economic transformations. While the core Maghreb countries (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia) have become firmly integrated into the Euro-Mediterranean migration system, Egypt has been predominantly connected to the Gulf (GCC) migration system. Intra-regional migration has mainly been focused on Libya. Recently, regional migration systems show increasing complexity and interconnectivity, while increasing migration from sub-Saharan Africa towards Libya and other North African countries might herald their future transition into settlement countries. The extent to which policies can enhance the development impact of migration is assessed by focusing on Morocco. Recent increases in remittances and (holiday) returns suggest that Morocco's policies towards migration and development have been successful at least to a certain extent. However, the analysis also exemplifies that specific "diaspora policies" have only limited effects if they are not accompanied by structural political and economic reform.

The Upper Senegal River Valley stretching from Matam, Senegal to Diamou, Mali is one of the more underdeveloped river regions of the western Sahel. Perhaps due to the lack of economic alternatives in the region, the Senegal River Valley has long been the source of African labour migrations. In the late 1950s, there were massive shifts in the migration away from Africa towards France. In this paper, the men who migrate to France are contrasted with those who go to African destinations. The analysis concentrates on the differences in the families and communities involved in the alternative migrant circuits, consistent with earlier analyses of migration patterns, especially the international migration patterns, that family and community factors determine the patterns of migration adopted by members of the impoverished peasantry. Spurred by major changes in the world economy and in local ecology, the contemporary migration of Africans, both within the continent and to various destinations in Europe and North America, has seriously affected thousands of lives and livelihoods. The contributors to this volume, reflecting a variety of disciplinary perspectives, examine the causes and consequences of this new migration. The essays cover topics such as rural-urban migration into African cities, transnational migration, and the experience of immigrants abroad, as well as the issues surrounding migrant identity and how Africans re-create community and strive to maintain ethnic, gender, national, and religious ties to their former homes.

This book investigates the diverse and dynamic forms of migration within Africa. Centring themes of agency, resource flows, and transnational networks, the book examines the enduring appeal of the Global South as a place of origin, transit, and destination. Popular media, government pronouncements, and much of the global research discourse continue to be oriented towards migration from the Global South to the Global North, despite the fact that the vast majority of migration is South-South. This book moves beyond these mischaracterisations and instead distinctly focuses on the agency of African migrants and the creative strategies they employ while planning their routes within and across the African continent. Case studies explore the flow of resources such as people, money, skills, and knowledge throughout the continent, while also casting a light on the lived experiences of migrants as they negotiate their sometimes precarious and vulnerable positions. Underpinned by intensive empirical studies, this book challenges prevailing narratives and provides a new way of thinking about South-South Migration. Composed by a majority of scholars from the Global South, the book will be crucial reading for researchers, students, and policy makers with a focus on South-South Migration, Migration and Inequalities, Migration and Development, and Refugee and Humanitarian Studies.

In the long run, a policy whose main focus is on improving so-called border management in countries that are known to trample human rights and disrespect the rule of law cannot be successful.
