This paper deals with some aspects of the Brazilian agricultural development in the last decade. The growth rate differentials between agriculture and industry in the 1980s is first analysed. According to the author, the kind of structural adjustment the Brazilian economy has faced during that period has favored agriculture to grow faster than the industrial sector. Furthermore it is argued that there has been an important additional incentive to agriculture, due to a huge reduction in the agricultural production costs. (Rev Econ Polit/DÜI)

This paper reviews the effects of Plano Real's macroeconomic policies on agriculture and discusses the new pespectives open after the strong devaluation in January 1999. Brazilian agriculture was severely affected by the combination of high interest rates and an overvalued exchange rate. In addition, it had to face the problems of excessive reduction in import tariffs, of financed imports and of low economic growth rates in recent years. Brazil has always been recognized as having a strong comparative advantage in agriculture. The devaluation which occurred, beginning in January 1999, opens better perspectives for the country to exploit its competitiveness in international markets. (Rev Econ Polit/DÜI)
