; The environmental and functional heterogeneity of nature, agriculture, settlements and other anthropogenic activities, influences landscape characteristics and their changes over time. After the industrial Revolution, the precarious equilibrium which regulated the co-evolutionary process between man and nature, has decidedly leaned in favor of a society which is continuously in search of new spaces to be explored and inhabited. In fact, currently, about 75% of emerged lands shows evidence of human alterations. The main factor determining changes in landscape and its functional processes is the land use. Land use change alters the biophysical coverage of soil, thus influencing ecological processes which provide goods and services supporting Life and human wellbeing. The present work is composed of three sections focused on: I) land use and land cover change monitoring; II) impact on ecosystem services assessment; II) evaluate their implications on land use policies and planning. Land use and land cover change analysis were performed using data from the Italian Land Use Inventory (IUTI). The development of new monitoring approaches allowed for the enhancement of the informative power of IUTI maintaining its low cost and high accuracy characteristics, thus encouraging its implementation in decision making processes. The detailed analysis of land use and land cover change in particular contexts like mountain landscapes and National Parks, allowed for the characterization of the main phenomena occurred in Italy during the past 20 years, among which: loss of arable lands, grasslands and pastures; forest expansion; urban growth. We adopted a multidisciplinary approach to better understand the causes of these modifications, their possible future trajectories and implications for land use policies and planning. The second part of this study focused on the assessment of ecosystem services, particularly carbon storage and sequestration, and their changes in response to positive or negative influences, such as forest management and urban growth, respectively. The assessment of impacts on ecosystem services may help to reconcile the historical bias between nature and human, through improving and completing the costs-benefits analysis related to particular choices, policies, plans and projects. Therefore, it will play an important role supporting future policies aimed to satisfy human needs but at a smaller cost on natural systems. The possibility to give a value to natural resources offers new challenges and opportunities related to their management: from the analysis of past policies to the development and implementation of innovative management strategies strictly connected to the needs of territories and local communities. In such a complex framework, characterized by fast changes affecting environmental quality and human wellbeing, the availability of data and models easily updatable plays a key role in supporting private and public decision makers. These choices, now apparently mainly related to the particular awareness or market strategies of administrations, enterprises and private citizens, will represent the future modus operandi. ; The research carried out during the PhD course is part of an interdisciplinary project funded by INAIL (Istituto Nazionale per l'Assicurazione contro gli Infortuni sul Lavoro) named "Study of the contamination by hexachlorocyclohexane isomers in the Sacco's River Valley and evaluation of the risks for the workers of this area". The Sacco's River Valley is a wide territory located between Rome and Frosinone in the central Italy crossed by Sacco River. Since 1900, this area had an important industrial development, mainly thanks to Bomprini Parodi Delfino (B.p.d), a company which over time has created a city around the industrial agglomerate. During the two World Wars, the B.d.p company produced mostly military explosives such as nitric acid, glycerine and dynamite. After the Wars , it expanded its range of manufacturing to the chemical industry. In particular, it specialized in synthesizing pesticides, insecticides, fungicides and herbicides and different types of fertilizers. Nevertheless, the intense industrial activity, the absence of laws in waste management and the uncontrolled use of the river water has led to a remarkable pollution of the river, groundwater and soil causing serious problems to the whole agro-food chain. The focus on this emergency has occurred in 2005, after the detection of high levels of toxic substances to human into several sample of milk produced from local farms (up to 20 times higher than the legal limit). The contamination was referred to b- hexachlorocyclohexane (b-HCH), a pesticide belonging to family of organochlorine pesticides produced from B.d.p. and widely used in agriculture. This substance is an halogenated compound belonging to a family of several stereoisomers, named a-, b-, g-, d-, e-, h-, q which differ for the physical-chemical properties and persistence in the environment related to the axial-equatorial substitution pattern of chlorine atoms around the six carbons ring [1]. Among the isomers, the g-HCH, also known as lindane, showed the highest pesticidal activity and it was widely used as an insecticide on fruits and vegetable, rice paddies, animals and seed treatment. Starting of these literature data, the research carried out during the PhD was focused on the investigation of the occurrence and distribution of HCHs isomers in different samples (soil, water, milk, feed and vegetables) collected in nine dairy farms located in the Sacco's River Valley. The samples were collected in June-September 2013 and January-April 2014. After the appropriate preparation, all samples were analyzed by GC-ECD and GC-MS. At several years from the onset of the agroenvironmental crisis, our analytical data confirmed a high degree of pollution in the investigated area, which deserves continuous environmental monitoring due to the strong impact of persistent organic pesticides on rural environment and human food chain. In addition to the monitoring, the bioremediation of the Valley must be seriously taken in account. Among the possible solutions, phytoremediation is applied in the Sacco's River Valley. It is based on the ability of certain plants to degrade, assimilate, and metabolize pollutants from soils accumulating them or their metabolites in different tissues and organs. In the final part of the PhD course, a preliminary study focused on the fate of HCHs on poplars. Then, in collaboration with forest researchers, several cores were collected from poplar trees selected according to a gradient of HCHs contamination into the Sacco's River Valley: one poplar located at a distance of about 500 m from the left bank of the Sacco River; a second poplar located close to the river bank and was thus subject to direct contamination. As a blank, several cores were also extracted from a control poplar growing close to a river in an uncontaminated area near Viterbo. All samples were firstly analyzed by Micro-Fourier Transform Infrared (micro-FTIR) Spectrometry and then by GC-ECD, after an appropriate preparation. This preliminary study evidenced two important aspects: the novelty in the analytical method using Micro-Fourier Transform Infrared (micro-FTIR) Spectrometry, a fast and non-destructive technique for the screening of samples; the ability of poplars to absorb HCHs isomers. This result confirms the role of poplars in bioremediation but opens novel questions about the final uses of them.
L'art. ; According to the Habitats and Birds directives and the relative Italian legislation tools, the Region Friuli-Venezia Giulia has identified 62 SACs and 8 SPAs. The Region FVG has nearly completed the designation of sites, and it is revisioning the IBA 2002 inventory. It has also carried out several interventions for the safeguard of habitats and species of community interest that are endangered. At present, the Region FVG does not have any legislation or administration tools that can allow an effective conservation of the territories of interest, and especially considering the annexes 2 and 4 of the Habitats directive, the regional regulation (LR 34/81) is not sufficient. The only conservation tool that is in fact available is the assessment of projects (DGR 2600/2002). The Region FVG is however preparing a comprehensive legislative tool for the reception of community regulations related to Natura 2000, aimed in particular at: (a) the safeguard of species included in annexes II and IV of the Habitats directive, (b) the development of conservation tools for Natura 2000 sites, (c) the development of conservation regulations, (d) the possibility of adopting proper Management Plans, (e) the development of a more exhaustive regulation of assessment of projects, (f) the definition of penalties. The tools provided by the European Union for the implementation of Natura 2000 are (a) the structural funds, (b) the Life plus, (c) the Rural Development Policy. The European Commission clearly indicates that the conservation of biodiversity policies should be integrated in the other community policies. According to the EC indeed, Natura 2000 network can be advantageous both at the economic level (development of services related to the ecosystems, provision of food and forestry products, activities strictly connected to the sites such as tourism, etc) and at the social level (diversification of the sources of occupation, stabilization of the social framework, increase of quality standards of life, safeguard of cultural heritage, etc). However, the Commission recognizes that the implementation of Natura 2000 can also lead to significant impacts on the economic activities (decrease of land value, limitations to agriculture and fishing, variations in the infrastructure interventions, limitations in extraction and forestry activities, etc). According to the EU, the management costs of Natura 2000 network are of about 6.1 billions of euros per year for the EU-25. After having considered several sources of founding, the EU has stated that the best approach is to use the sources of founding that are already existent. The new Rural Development Programme 2007-2013 is under development, according to Reg.EC 1698/2005. The tool has high strategic relevance, due to the importance of agricultural and forestry activities in the territory management and biodiversity control. Special relevance is given to the measures in "Territory management": Natura 2000 Payments is the tool to compensate the loss of income and the major costs derived from the application of Natura 2000 regulations in agricultural and forestry areas; Agroenvironmental and forestry Payments represents the tool for the enhancement of a sustainable use of the resources. Finally, the measure Not Productive Investments allows to realize structures such as naturalistic trails, visitor centers and fruition structures.
This study aims to examine some of the historical and economic aspects of Bagni di Lucca, a spa town in the Media Valle del Serchio, without renouncing to offer a geographical synthesis of the territory. In particular, the point of view we have privileged concerns the local factories and their evolution in the second half of the 20th century, because of the prominent economic role they assumed, during the period considered and at least until the very early years of the 2000s, with respect to the traditional spa industry, which has inspired over time, and contrary to the productive events of the municipality, an appreciable literature. Bagni di Lucca currently presents itself as a "crystallised" territory, lingering melancholically in a memory of which it has become a protagonist and virtuous. In spite of the demographic and socio-economic stalemate in which it finds itself, it allows us to glimpse a local milieu of extraordinary richness, which, if properly understood and valued by the local players, could find new margins of growth and expression. The town, which in the first half of the 19th century reached the peak of its European fame, was an essential tourist destination for nobles, diplomats, intellectuals and rich bourgeoisie, not only for the renowned therapeutic virtues of its thermal mineral waters, but also because it was chosen as a summer residence by the princely court of Lucca and later by the grand ducal court. With the political unification of Tuscany, and the consequent withdrawal of the usual aristocratic visitors, the long and gradual decline of local tourism began, which, unable to modernise over time, relied on deteriorated and clearly obsolete accommodation facilities in the aftermath of the Second World War. The fragility of the economic balance of the centre, essentially determined by its monofunctional vocation (and aggravated, moreover, by the progressive state of abandonment in which agriculture, once a valuable supplementary activity, was found) induced the population to seek, through individual solutions, new sources of sustenance alternative to tourism, drawing on a varied humus of resources which, although formed in the shadow of the thermal economy, was historically well rooted and widespread in the territory. In particular, the basic activities that allowed the local economy to successfully relaunch itself, thanks to the introduction of new technologies and a new organisation of work, were the following: the manufacture of statuettes and plaster artefacts, the production of paper and cardboard, and finally the extraction of tannin from chestnut wood. Already at the beginning of the 1960s, an analysis of the social structure of the population of Bagni di Lucca highlighted a trend that in a very short time seemed to show an irreversible character: about 52% of the active population was represented by workers and labourers, in the context of an economic context increasingly oriented towards industry. Bagni di Lucca, which was transforming from an exclusive and elitist spa resort into a dynamic working-class town, was therefore able to successfully restructure its economy thanks to a skilful combination of tradition and modernity. Our study does not pretend to be exhaustive, nor does it attempt to measure itself in a strict sense against the specialist contents of the historical-economic and archaeological-industrial disciplines. Rather, its intention is to underline the anthropogeographical importance of certain productive activities which, rooted in the history, tradition and complex of environmental and human resources of the area examined, have undertaken, in a historical phase of economic growth, the path of adaptation to the times, building a bridge between a substratum of technical acquisitions and social customs consolidated by an ancient heritage, and new possibilities for updating and development. Alongside the spa industry (but above all, since the second post-war period, as an alternative to it), these industries have therefore acted as microeconomic factors of territorial identity, thanks also to which, by virtue of the work systems and values they have generated, we owe the varied richness of the local milieu.
Soil pollution by potentially toxic metal(loid)s (PTMs) is a globally widespread problem because of most metals don't undergo microbial or chemical degradation, and their total concentration in soil persists for a long time after their introduction. For these reasons is necessary to find soil remediation technologies, also to minimize the potentially accumulation of metals in the food chain. During the last decades, the application of the "green technologies" found the interest of the scientific community because more cost-effective and easily applicable. In this thesis, the importance of an appropriate sampling scheme to assess the PTMs pollution in agricultural soils subjected to waste disposal and dumping, the relevance of bioavailability assessment for phytoremediation and the potential PTMs (im)mobilization by amendments application were studied. The choice of a most appropriate sampling scheme is a crucial step to establish soil pollution and, consequently, risk management. The sampling scheme should be able to detect the pollution level, determine its geographical extension and, possibly, the background level of pollution in the area. Usually, the high cost of the laboratories analysis and the difficulty of managing extensive soil sampling, lead to choose wide grids of sampling (from 25x25 m to 5x5 km) and to bulk discrete soil samples to obtain composite samples. However, when strong concentration gradients exist in the field compositing the discrete soil samples may significantly underestimate the risk posed by the pollutants. For this reason, the degree and spatial variability of soil pollution by PTMs, in three agricultural sites, subjected to waste disposal, were assessed applying a soil sampling scheme based on a two-level grid resolution. On the first level, a regular low-resolution 10x10 m grid was defined. On the second level, each grid was subdivided into nine high-resolution 3x3 m subplots. Discrete soil samples were taken from each 3x3 m plot. Composite soil samples were made bulking aliquots from the discrete soil samples. Soil samples were collected from both 'topsoil' (0-30cm) and 'subsoil' (30-60 cm) layers to evaluate vertical gradients. Comparing the statistical analysis and various pollution indices data from composite and discrete soil samples, only Giugliano (GI) site resulted to be polluted . Indeed, from the analysis of composite data, GI site appeared to be slightly polluted by Cu and Zn (mean content of 131 and 95 mg kg-1, respectively). When the same analysis and indices were applied to discrete soil data, the slightly polluted site became highly polluted by Cu (mean and max of 276 and 1707 mg kg-1) and Zn (174 and 972 mg kg-1), and slightly polluted by Sb and As (max of 15 and 30 mg kg-1). Furthermore, a large inhomogeneity in soil pollutant spatial distribution emerged. Most part of existing legislations on soil remediation, define an area as potentially polluted on the basis of the total or pseudototal content of PTMs. However, to establish the risk associated to soil PTMs pollution, it is crucial to determine the mobility and bioavailability of pollutants, the latter defined as the fraction of the total metal(loid)s available to the receptor organism. Based on the previous work results, the mobility and bioavailabilityof Cu and Zn in polluted discrete soil samples was investigated applying single and sequential extraction procedures. Main aim of this work was, to assess the feasibility and the effectiveness of a phytoremediation action of the soil based on Eucalyptus planting assisted by compost, Trichoderma sp. and microorganisms. 1M NH4NO3 and 0.05M EDTA extractions were applied, before and during the phytoremediation treatment, to assess the readily and potentially bioavailable amounts of Cu and Zn. The amount of both metals extracted by 1M NH4NO3 was from 0.1 to 7.9 % of respective total contents while the amount extracted by 0.05 M EDTA ranged from 13 to 64 % of total content. After one year from planting, a significant reduction of Cu and Zn bioavailable amounts was observed, without any difference between the several applied treatments. Plants uptake was not significantly correlated with both chemical extractions and a general underestimation of 1M NH4NO3 bioavailable Zn in comparison with plant uptake was observed. Both single and sequential extractions suggested an higher mobility of Zn respect to Cu in soil. A reduction of the plant uptake efficiency, as assessed by the accumulation factor in correspondence of highly polluted plots was observed. Overall, in the study sites currently under assisted phytoremediation, the chosen treatments appear to be effective in reducing at least the mobile and plant available PTMs content of the soil. When it is not possible to remove the metal(loid)s from polluted soils, other options, such as immobilization treatments should be considered as an integral part of risk management. Immobilization technique consists in an increasing of PTMs retention on soil. In agriculture, several amendments are frequently used to improve the soil properties. Many of them may modify significantly the mobility of PTMs in the soil environment. Part of the thesis work was, therefore, focused on the influence of organic and inorganic amendments on the bioavailability of As and Cd in two Australian soils with different physico-chemical properties. Soils were spiked with As and Cd and, after four weeks, incubated with poultry manure (PM), poultry manure biochar (PMBC) and coal fly-ash (CFA). After other four weeks, the incubated samples were analysed for pH and bioavailability of As and Cd, assessed by1M NH4NO3 extraction and pore-water analysis. These data were compared with plant uptake, using maize (Zea mays L.) as test crop. Cadmium was almost completely immobilized in all treated soils, mostly due to the influence that the amendments had on soil pH. Indeed, the higher pH of soil A (8.5±0.03), automatically reduced the bioavailability of Cd, independently of the applied treatment. Opposite behaviour was observed for As, whose bioavailability generally increased after amendments addition. Indeed, in soil B with pH 5.1±0.03, the As bioavailability was lower than in soil A and the application of amendments always increased the bioavailable fraction. These trends were confirmed by maize uptake. In conclusion, the application of amendments to reduce the mobility and bioavailability of metal(loid)s in polluted soil resulted efficient for Cd and inefficient for As. This different behaviour was mainly related to their different nature (cation and anion, respectively) and intrinsic properties. Hence, the amendments, modifying soil characteristics, can influence the metal(loid)s mobility and bioavailability but their effect is related to the metal properties. A similar experiment was carried out with soil and sludge from the ex-ILVA brownfield area located north of Naples city (south Italy). A phytoremediation study was carried out for two consecutive years, involving the use of humic acids to enhance the adaptability and grown of A. Donax on polluted soil and post-washing sludge with attention to the mobility and bioavailability of PTMs. The humic acid application significantly increased the biomass production, in both soil and sludge. In particular, although A. donax grown on the most polluted substrate, i.e. sludge, it was interesting to observe an increasing of plant biomass as a consequence of humic acid addition, maybe due to an improvement of rhizosphere N cycling activity consequent to more intense root activity and exudation. The addition of humic acid, although useful for the plant growth, had no influence on Pb and Zn mobility and bioavailability, in both soil and sludge, probably as a consequence of the high pH value of both substrates. Despite the low bioavailability of the metals in soil and sludge, A. donax uptaken more Pb and Zn than the amounts "predicted" by 1M ammonium nitrate extraction, confirming the high ability of A. donax to phytoextract metals in all conditions and, hence, encouraging its use for phytoremediation purposes.
; The importance of cultural landscapes as part of the cultural heritage of a country has in recent years led to the development of policies and actions for their protection and valorisation, following the European Landscape Convention, which invites each country to "identify its own landscapes throughout its territory" and "to analyse their characteristics and the forces and pressures transforming them" and "to take note of changes". The need to identify the characteristic features and the traditional practices is mainly due to two Ministerial Decrees. The first one is the Cross Compliance Decree, where the "maintenance of the characteristic elements of the landscape" is mandatory for the preservation of the Good Agricultural and Environmental Conditions (GAEC). The second one is the Decree on the National Observatory of Rural Landscape, approved at the end of 2012, which establish the "National Register of Rural Landscapes of Historical Interest, Agricultural Practices and Traditional Knowledge", which has the purpose of "identify and catalogue in the Register traditional rural landscapes or landscapes of historical interest present within the national territory and connected traditional practices and knowledge". From these initiatives come the problem of identifying and classifying the characteristic features of the rural landscape, especially with regard to their typological classification that allows to identify the "characters of the typical" in a particular landscape. This study intends to identify those that can be considered as the characteristic features and the traditional practices of the historical landscape, defining the variety present at national level and completing a typological classification, using as a basis the study areas of the National Catalogue of Historical Rural Landscapes, a study promoted by the Ministry for Agriculture, Food and Forestry, coordinated by Prof. Mauro Agnoletti, in which are collected the most significant cultural landscapes in Italy. This research led to the identification of about 105 characteristic elements and traditional practices, divided into 14 classes. For each element was made a fact sheet with a standard structure, accompanied by photos and various information so as to carry out a classification of these elements, in order to identify and characterize some typologies, based on typicalness, even at the local level. In addition, in five study areas were carried multi-temporal analyses, to observe the changes in the landscape over the last 50 years and to test this type of analysis for the study and identification of characteristic landscape elements. This kind of analysis can also provide the base for the creation of a monitoring system of the rural landscape on a national scale. These analyses have allowed a more detailed study of the characteristic elements, through the creation of thematic maps, and have confirmed that this type of analysis is an ideal instrument to investigate in detail the structure of a landscape and to follow the changes in time. The study has shown that the Italian rural landscape is still very diverse, with many different types of characteristic elements and of traditional practices, that still survive and which often represent the identity of a territory. The characteristic elements and the traditional practices identified in this study, represent a first step to deepen our knowledge of the historical landscapes and of traditional agricultural practices. Due to the wide diversity of cultural landscapes in Italy, in fact, to apply concrete actions for the valorisation and safeguarding of historical landscapes, a complete description must be provided, with a good typological classification in order to follow the initiatives at the national level, but with attention to the local diversity. As a matter of fact, it is not possible to apply measures universally suitable for all the Italian landscapes, without calibrating the individual actions to the different, socioeconomic, environmental, historical and cultural situations that can be found at the local level.
; Global environmental and productive emergencies, which are currently affecting the agricultural sector, have focused the research attention and the Institutions interest on the preservation and implementation of Agroforestry systems, for their intrinsic capacity of combing food and wood production with environmental preservation. Intensive agricultural practices, combined with predominant monocropping farming systems, have contributed to the progressive and dangerous simplification of agroecosystems, with serious environmental and productive consequences and with a dramatic impoverishment of many traditional rural scenarios. In this context, the PhD work aims to analyze the role of Agroforestry systems in modern agriculture, verifying their economic sustainability. The study, organized into three research papers, was developed in relation to the two main current regulations of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) of the European Union linked with agroforestry: Measure 2.2.2 of the Rural Development Plans 2007/13: first establishment of Agroforestry systems on agricultural land; the Single Farm Payment (SFP), supporting farmers according to their Eligible Agricultural Area (EAA), that might be reduced by scattered trees across farmland. The first part of the study is related to Silvoarable models of walnut for timber production and intercropped with arable crops. According to recent modeling research, walnut Silvoarable models are amongst the most profitable farming systems under temperate conditions of western Europe. The PhD research was conducted in an experimental plantation of CNR-IBAF of Porano, where since 1992 there has been a continuous monitoring of the interaction between trees of common and hybrid walnut with the following crops: wheat, clover and meadow. The objective was to bring to the conclusion the observations on the use of tree basimetric area (G), as an index for estimation of the relative yield of intercrops according to the trees growth. This research has confirmed the benefits of walnut Silvoarable systems, combining high tree growth rates and good intercrops yield. According to the collected data, various Silvoarable models are presented according to the tree growth rates and whose G, up to the harvesting age of the plantation, can be Abstract used for minimizing the competitive interactions for the solar radiation towards the intercrops. The second research part analyzed the relationship between the trees outside forest (TOF) and CAP, quantifying the SFP decrement in traditional agroforestry systems. This study was conducted combing GIS with aerial surveys of rural parcels. It was carried out in the regions of Veneto, Umbria and Lazio, and analyzed traditional agroforestry systems, with TOF in the parcels lined up along the borders, as well scattered across. In the study cases it was found a considerable reduction of the SFP, because TOF canopy reduces the eligible agricultural area; additionally, incorrect photointerpretation, in contrast with the official rules regulating the payment of farmers' grants, further reduces the SFP in agroforestry systems. Therefore, the current relationship between SFP and TOF strongly discourage farmers to the maintenance of these trees in their farmland. In the third part, the above results were validated through structured interviews to agronomists and foresters, the professionals in charge to promote innovative farming systems to agricultural stakeholders. The study sample compared two different socio-economic and agronomic realities of the northern (Veneto) and central (Umbria) Italy. The survey showed the total failure of 2.2.2 measure (First Establishment of novel agroforestry systems), depending on: i) inappropriate extension and research activities; and ii) lack of economic attractiveness of agroforestry systems, strongly linked to uncertainties and gaps in the regulation on the SFP modulation. Overall, the research work have showed that the current CAP is not able to promote the high potentialities of agroforestry systems for sustainable rural development, that would be strongly implemented throughout a judicious management of the environmental and productive benefits of trees outside forest.
; The European Commission demanded from the member countries a better finalisation of the intervention following a logical and consequent path between analyses of needs, strategy of intervention and proposed measures, regarding the Community Strategic Guidelines 2007-2013. Italy has acknowledged the European guidelines outlining a national strategic plan (Piano strategico nazionale, PSN) for rural development, with the aim to guarantee the strategic coherence between the communitarian, national and regional plans and to guarantee the strategic and financial connection between the instruments of rural development, the PAC and the policies of cohesion. In this strategic national plan are defined the following aspects: - Analysis of the context; - The general guidelines for the policies of rural development, - The coherence between other national communitarian policies of intervention; - The common financial table ; - Common aspect for monitoring evaluations, controls and sanctions; - The national strategic plans of rural development and their financial endowment. In the ambit of the strategic plan are singled out several typologies of indicators, which can be used for the programming process as necessary instruments to understand the progress, the efficiency and efficacy of the programs of rural development (PSR). In fact, in addition to traditional indicators of finance, realisation, result and impact, are being introduced the baseline indicators, with which it is possible to define the initial state of the context in which the program operates, describing it in terms of points of strength and points of weakness. This baseline indicators permits to define in the best possible way the strategy of intervention of the policy of rural development, and creating the parameters, which help to evaluate successively the efficiency of the programming. In particular for the analysis of the environmental state, have been proposed the following baseline indicators: Biodiversity: bird population of the agricultural areas, High Nature Value Farmland, composition of the forest species. Based on this directions, both on the European level and on the National level, this work proposes a alternative methodology to the guidelines proposed by the EEA, in which are taken in account the structural factors of the territory that locates the High Nature Value Farmland (HNVF). The principal aim, to locate the High Nature Value Farmland, is linked to the maintenance of the biodiversity of the agricultural areas. This implicates an increase in the value of the landscape and creates in the same time the maintenance of the traditional, specific and agricultural practices. To locate the High Nature Value Farmland is an important matter both in a territorial planning level, in which the aim is to preserve in a dynamic context these areas for a sustainable agriculture, and in an executive level to draw up the operational plans of intervention and finance. The management of the territory depends on the decision that act in a spatial level. For this reason it has been decided to use Spatial Decision Support Systems. They are information systems that work with the integration of different information and they determine the arrangement of the alternatives based on specific criteria. This instruments integrate the Geographical Information Systems, the Spatial Models and the Multi-Criteria Analyses with the aim to define a management that respects the dynamic of the natural systems and that shows an integrated decision between different criteria. The aim of this thesis is to propose an alternative methodological path for the location of the High Nature Value Farmland, to the actual path proposed by the EEA. It has the aim to identify "sensitive areas" of the province of Viterbo, where the impacts of the anthropic activity can be more relevant and the measures of mitigations more efficient, that is, where opportune agricultural practice can lead to better results. This aim can be reached through planning of "processes", that is taking in account the peculiarity of the territory. The goal of this research is to develop a Spatial Decision Support System, applied to the location of the High Nature Value Farmland that takes in account the complex city of the rural, environmental, social and economical system and of the relation between its variables. To the rural areas then it is recognised a role within the environmental dynamic system as a connecting element with the surrounding environments. This approach is based on locating and preserving the relation between habitat systems with the aim of increasing the level of biodiversity. The main objective is the realisation of a cartography of the sensitive areas obtained following a multi-criteria analysis procedure, evaluating the level of influence of the environmental and anthropic structural factors depending on their distance and density.
; In the last years new lines of search have been developed applied to the sour-forest field, finalized to the development of the best techniques and to the selection and the genetic improvement of material vegetable for the production of the biomass. These studies experience them have been favourite from the political necessities generated from the excessive energetic consumption of the Countries industrialize to you and emerged subject to an intense economic development and the contemporary increase of the costs of the fossil energetic sources. The sparsity of these sources, and their implicit increase of price, are the consequence of the inborn sparsity of these assets in along period, of the meaningful increase of the not supported total question from a production increase in the long and medium term, and of the continuous political-military tensions that have in many States producers. For the production of the biomass in sour-forest field, the forest plantations to short turn (Short Rotation Forestry) will only be able to have a meaningful role if the difficulties, of technical and economic nature, today found in this particular field of agriculture, will be faced and resolved. In Italy, the species considered useful for these productions is those to express increase of the kinds Eucaliptus L., Populus L. and Salix L. In lands it considers marginal assumes the employment you of Robinia pseudoacacia L. As far as the Populus genus of trees, it objects it you of the selection activity and genetic improvement heads to obtain a high production, an express increase and one greater tolerance to the stress. Near the Department of Forest Resources and Environment (DiSAFRi) of the University of the Tuscia, in the last years have been realized collections of germplasm of Populus, in particular of Populus alba L. and Populus nigra L. The collected genetic material has been developed to the inside of the Agrarian Company of the University of the Tuscia, whose progeny have constituted families of stepbrothers (half sib). The single genotypes have been identifying to you for means of a code, which it renders the identification of the family and the population of belongings possible. Beyond to the former conservation ex-situ, these families half sib turn out to be an optimal line of departure for studies of genetics of the populations and quantitative genetics. The quantitative characters you, to the base of the production of the biomass, can be comprised through the study of the progeny first generation generated from genotypes of poplar pertaining to the same different species or species. Consequently, it has been generated pedigree that the widest genetic variability of the species enclosed, using of the coming from ancestral celebrations from atmospheres and various latitudes much. The pedigree of poplar white man, called POP4 (142 genotypes), studied in this activity of search, have been obtained from the crossing of the ancestral celebrations "14P11" and "6K3", that they make part of natural populations very distinguished. "14P11" it is the feminine parent (♀), and belongs to the family deriving from the plant mother 14P, original of southern Italy (Policoro, MT). "6K3" (♂), that it belongs to the family 6K, it is original of northern Italy (Carcare, SV). In the within of the European plan of search, called POPYOMICS, through the study of this progeny it is tried to estimate and to comprise the importance of some quantitative characters been involved you in the production of the biomass in the native species of P. alba. This activity of integral search with studies of necessary molecular Biology to the location of the genetic markers been involved in the expression of the characters, using an analysis QTL (Quantitative Trait Loci) finalized to the genetic improvement and the development of the selection assisted from molecular markers (MAS). The experimentation has been lead in three situated ones situates to you in England, France and Italy. The systems have been realize to you and managed with the same technical criteria. The characters estimated in the experimentation can be distinguished in characters legacies to the increase and the production, circumference, height, index of volume, production of biomass, in characters legacies to the morphology of the leaf, leaf area and length of the petiole, and in characters who describe the ramification of the plants, number of branches sylleptic and index of branches. In order to catch up he objects it to you places, the experimentation has been second lead a general plan of job very defined. Such slowly he is subdivided second this makes yourself: 1. Collection of the data; 2. Correction of the data (location of the outliers, transformation of the data, adjustment spaces them of the data); 3. Analyses of the data intra-site (medium fixed genotypic, hereditability characterize them and genotypic, correlation between characters, heterosis); 4. ; The olive mill wastewater (OMW) disposal is, currently, one of the main environmental problems in all olive-oil producing countries, especially in the Mediterranean area. In fact, for its high organic load, phenolic fraction with phytotoxic effects and antimicrobial activity, the OMW is a highly polluted agro-industrial effluent. The biological treatment can be very difficult since solid residues, high organic load and phenols may strongly reduce the depuration efficiency. Consequently, a possible process should include several technological options, physical, chemical and biological, as well as combinations thereof, thus resulting in increased process costs. At the moment, the Italian legislation allows land spreading of untreated olive mill wastewater that is the best economical solution. Application on agriculture soils is a practice which solves partially the problem of OMW disposal. Positive and negative effects on soil composition and fertility are still under study, so that OMW application must be strictly controlled. Land spreading, in fact, may cause serious negative environmental impact regarding, for instance, groundwater contamination. In the last years, alternative solutions have been proposed in view of the use this waste as a source of valuable compounds. Several recent research studies have reported the possibility of OMW valorization to obtain products of actual or potential industrial interest. The presence in OMW of a wide range of biomolecules such as organic acids, polyalcohols, simple and complex sugars and lipids makes it a potential basis for fermentation processes. In this way, OMW could be a putative candidate as a potentially suitable liquid growth medium for the production of microbial lipases by virtue of its residual lipid content. For these reasons, the objective of the present PhD thesis was to assess the suitability of OMW as growth medium for the production of lipases and to set up a related fermentation process that might lead, at the same time, to a low polluting load final effluent. A large number of microbial strains have been screened for lipase production belonging to several fungal genera, Candida and Penicillium in particular. In literature, numerous methods for lipolytic enzyme production are published and medium composition and cultural conditions have been fully optimised. Neverthless, the most frequently used medium is a chemical defined and complex one, significantly affecting the final product costs. Besides, in the last years, a whole range of microbial lipase preparations has been developed. Sigma, Amano, Roche, Novo Nordisk, etc., provide lipolytic preparations with various compositions and catalytic proprierties employed in areas such as detergent pharmaucetic and food industries and biodiesel production. Our innovative approach consists in the trial of producing microbial lipases using an agroindustrial-waste based medium. Our basic idea, in fact, was that of developing a low cost production medium. Firstly, 12 fungal strains belonging to well-known lypolytic species (Geotrichum candidum, NRRL 552, 553; Rhizopus sp, ISRIM 383; Rhizopus arrhizus, NRRL 2286; Rhizopus oryzae, NRRL 6431; Aspergillus oryzae, NRRL 1988, 495; Aspergillus niger, NRRL 334; Candida cylindracea, NRRL Y-17506; Penicillium citrinum, NRRL 1841, 3754, ISRIM 118) were screened for their ability to grow on undiluited OMW and to produce extracellular lipase activity. The highest lipase productions were obtained under non-optimized conditions after 168 h with Geotrichum candidum NRRL 553 (0.521 U/ml) and Candida cylindracea (0.460 U/ml). Interesting production levels were also achieved after 72 h with strains of Penicillium citrinum (0.365, 0.320 and 0.375 U/ml for NRRL 1841, NRRL 3754 and ISRIM 118, respectively). These strains were then selected to study the effect of culture conditions, such as OMW typology, nitrogen sources and inducers, on the enzyme production. With regard to the lipase production by P. citrinum NRRL 1841, the enzyme activity was significantly influenced by nitrogen addition; on the other hand, the addition of oils resulted in a marked increase in biomass without affecting, however, lipase production. Lipase production by C. cylindracea NRRL Y-17506 was significatly favored by ammonium salts and oil addition. This strain growth in OMW medium containing ammonium chloride and olive oil led to an activity peak of 9.48 U/ml after 264 hours of fermentation. In order to optimise lipase production by P. citrinum in OMW-based medium, the combined effect of three variables (i.e, concentration of NH4Cl, yeast extract and initial pH) was assessed using a multi-factorial design with 'optimizer' function of 'Modde 5.0' program. The optimised combination by the model was as follows: pH 6.15, 2.7 g/l NH4Cl e 1.1 g/l extract yeast. The maximum lipase activity was 1.242 U/ml after 192 hour of fermentation. To gain information on the possible up-scaling of the process, further experiments were performed in 3-l laboratory-scale reactors. Specifically, pneumatically agitated (Airlift) and mechanically agitated (STR) reactors were employed using the optimised OMW-based medium. In both cases, the extracellular lipase peaked 192 h after inoculation. Howewer, the maximum activity was significatly higher in STR with respect to the Airlift (0.700 vs 0.420 U/ml, respectively). Of all strains, C. cylindracea appeared to be particularly interesting and was, therefore, used as the model microorganism to further investigate the feasibility of an OMW substrate. Firstly, the optimisation of medium composition was assessed in shaken cultures. In particular, the effects on the lipase production of olive oil concentration (1, 3, 5 e 10 g/l), glucose (5 g/l), Tween 80 (0,5 g/l) and several growth nutrients (yeast extract, malt extract and peptone) addition were studied. The best medium composition was as follows: diluited OMW (1:2), olive oil 3 g/l, NH4Cl 2.4 g/l and yeast extract 0.5 g/l. The glucose and Tween 80 addition negatively affected the production of lipolytic enzyme. Lipase production by C. cylindracea on OMW-optimized medium was subsequently assessed in mechanically agitated bioreactor (STR). To study the agitation influence on enzyme production, a set of experiments was carried out at three impeller speed, 300, 500 and 700 rpm; moreover, an additional experiment was carried out at dissolved oxygen DO > 20% saturation (agitation speed automatically controlled between 300 and 800 rpm). To evaluate the effect of pH, three conditions were compared: free pH; fixed pH (6.5) maintained constant by addition of HCl 4.0 M and NaOH 4.0 M; pH lower than 6.5 controlled with addition of HCl 4.0 M. The maximum lipase productions were obtained with the pH left free to vary, 500 rpm costant agitation speed (18.5 U/ml) and variable agitation speed between 300 and 800 rpm to ensure a dissolved oxygen value upper to 20% (18.7 U/ml); in the latter thesis the onset of enzyme activity was anticipated thus leading to increased bioprocess productivity. At 300 e 700 rpm agitation speed, the maximum lipase productions were 2.54 and 11.65 U/ml, respectively. Finally, to set up the bioprocess of lipase production by C. Cylindracea grown on OMW-based medium, the isoenzymatic profiles of the raw sample was evaluated. This aspect appears to be very interesting since it is known that commercial C. rugosa lipase is a mixture of 3 isoenzymes namenly Lip 1, Lip2 and Lip 3 but the yeast is able to produce up to seven different isoenzymes (Lip 1-Lip 7). Moreover isoenzymatic profiles can depend on media composition and fermentation conditions. With this aim, a set of analitycal isoelectrofocusing experiments were carried out. In the gels, a sample of commercial lipase (Type VII, Sigma) and two raw samples of lipase by C. cylindracea grown on OMW-optimized medium and corresponding to two lipolytic activity peaks (1st and 2nd peak, 48esime and 192esime hour of fermentation, respectively) obtained in STR, were loaded. The results suggest that the raw samples were constituted of more lipolytic isoenzymes with the isoenzymatic profile having only one band in common with that of the commercial lipase (assigned pI 4.7). The sample corresponding to the 1st activity peak showed a strong band at pI 5.1 and a triplette of weak bands at pIs 5.06, 5.0 e 4.9. Moreover, the isoenzymatic profiles changed during fermentation; in fact, the bands at pIs 5.1, 5.0 and 4.9 disappeared and a new strong band at pI 4.5 formed. Finally, in both raw samples a band at pI 3.8 was observed. OMWs valorisation by its use as growth medium for lipase production by C. cylindracea NRRL Y-17506 and P. citrinum NRRL 1841 appears to be possible and promising. Moreover, the investigation for further up-scaling is need to evaluate the economic fattibility of the bioprocess.
Yaklaşık olarak Erken Tunç Çağı'nın sonlarına, yani Erken Tunç Çağı III-IV'e (Erken Cezire III-V'in sonu) tarihlendirilen erken evre (1. ; The Upper Tigris region represents an important area within the mountainous system of south-eastern Anatolia and its relevance is related to its geographical position that plays a role in connecting the Mesopotamian lowlands to both northern and eastern Anatolian areas. Archaeological researches carried out during the last thirty years along the upper course of the Tigris river have provided new important evidence for the definition of a local cultural horizon and a large corpus of data that may be used to clarify chronological divisions and synchronism within the region itself and beyond. The aim of this book is to investigate the results of the recent archaeological activities concerning the final part of the Early and the Middle Bronze Age. Starting from a detailed analysis of the published data, central issues concerning settlements, stratigraphy, architecture, pottery, regional links, and chronology have been treated. The region of the Upper Tigris river, north of the Ṭūr ʿAbdīn hills and at the foot of the high south-eastern Anatolian mountains, show a coherent picture in terms of archaeological evidence. Surveys and excavations have documented that an important occupational period of the valley should be dated back to the end of the 3rd and the first half of the 2nd millennium BC, when mainly small sized settlements tend to be established on the river terraces on the edge of the Tigris floodplain and along the main river tributaries. Many of them are characterized by large buildings or architectural complexes and the presence of a typical ceramic assemblage which appears to be distinct from the other contemporaneous ceramic traditions of the neighbouring regions. The assemblage of pottery, mainly red-brown slipped and painted wares, is important for the definition of a local horizon and for the identification of intersite cultural connections in the upper Tigris region. The ubiquity of pots sherds, essentially representing the bulk of what we found in the field, make them currently the basis of this investigation. In the particular case of the Upper Tigris, area of recent investigation, the pottery is remarkable when compared with other categories of finds and their presence, not only in stratified contexts but also on the surface of non-excavated sites, makes one of the most reliable tools for characterizing the material production of this specific geographical area and interpreting wider features of the cultural development in the Upper Tigris. A part a brief geographical and historical introduction (Chapter 1), the core of the book is represented by the results of the archaeological researches in the region and their analysis (Chapters 2 and 4). Surveyed areas and the excavated sites are the subjects of the second chapter (Chapter 2) that provides also the current state of the art for our archaeological knowledge. An important contribution is offered by the excavations at Hirbemerdon Tepe and to this site is dedicated the Chapter 3 where is reasoned argument of the archaeological context (3.2) with its phases of occupation and associated pottery (3.4), mainly unpublished. Much space is given to the classification of pottery sherds (3.3) both in technological and morphological terms and the analysis of spatial and diachronic occurrence of wares and types. Also main small findings are interpreted and contextualized in the regional and chronological frameworks (3.5). Our primary source of information for a detailed analysis of the pottery is the architectural complex, discovered on the mound of Hirbemerdon Tepe but also the evidence from other soundings opened on the site. The first excavations campaigns (2005-2007) carried out at Hirbermerdon Tepe, on the right bank of Tigris river, yielded good archaeological contexts and a conspicuous amount of pottery and artefacts mainly dating back to the first part of the 2nd millennium BC. Providing a new set of stratified data, Hirbemerdon Tepe offers an important contribution to defining the cultural profile of the Upper Tigris valley area. The excavations provided us with a sequence of three main ceramic phases, each individuated by morphological and technological attributes (3.6). The early phase (Fase 1), dating to the end of the Early Bronze Age, approximately to Early Bronze Age III-IV (end of Early Jazirah III-V), is characterized by the presence of an early version of RBWW and DROB; the middle phase (Fase 2), dated to the Middle Bronze Age, is characterized mainly by RBWW and band painted ware. The last phase (Fase 3) comprises a mixed assemblage with RBWW types of MBA date and others in common ware together with some Khabur and Nuzi sherds of Late Bronze Age date. It is not ascertained that at Hirbemerdon exists RBWW of LBA date. A section is dedicated to discuss the pottery repertoire, its technological and morphological characteristics, and in the regional context (3.7), comparing data with those from other sites and regions in order to underline the relationship between the local ceramic horizon and those of the neighbours. The end of the chapter concerns remarks on the regional periodization and propose a date for the repertoire. Chapter 4 offers general remarks about the settlement developments, architecture, pottery and significative small finds recovered in the Upper Tigris region. According to the results of this study, based on the published data currently available and the evidence from Hirbemerdon Tepe, the rise of the local Middle Bronze Age culture has to be dated to the passage between the 3rd and the 2nd millennium. The floruit of the Upper Tigris communities has to be dated to the period between the 19th and 17th centuries that coincides with the main phase of production of the red-brown slipped/painted pottery. A common pottery horizon is widely recognizable in the Upper Tigris region, marked specifically by the presence of categories known as Red Brown Wash Ware (RBWW), Red Brown Burnished Ware (RBBW), Dark Rimmed Orange Bowls/Ware (DROB/DROW) and Band Painted Ware (BD) which are characterized by a layer of red/brown slips used to cover, entirely or partially, the surface of the pot and to decorate it. Parallels of single components of the pottery shape are geographically widespread, encompassing the Upper Euphrates in Anatolia and Syria, the Balikh area, the Upper Khabur and the northern Iraqi lowlands, sometimes the Anatolian highlands, but the particular surface treatment is a specific local characteristic and has to be considered as a distinctive expression of the Tigris valley culture. The high percentage of red-brown slipped and painted wares suggests that a proper ceramic region existed between the South-Eastern Taurus fringes and the Ṭūr ʿAbdīn uplands, south-west of the Van mountain system, resting firmly within a local tradition. Red-brown wares (DROB/DROW, RBWW, BD) are products of the same manufacturing tradition, centred on the Tigris river area. It is likely that the DROB were out of use at the beginning of 2nd millennium, a part some marginal exceptions, whereas the RBWW continued for the entire span of the Middle Bronze Age and probably until the beginning of the Late Bronze Age. The Tigris pottery assemblage experienced the effects of different influxes, from the Euphrates area and to the Jazirah, with a period of major interaction and others of less intensive contacts. In conclusion, Chapter 5 explores the social and cultural value of the homogeneity in material culture within the Tigris region, suggesting the existence of a communal organization maybe connected with political entities. The sites characterised by red-brown wares represent evidence of cultural continuity between the Early and Middle Bronze Ages. It may be assumed that at a certain point a transformation of the local social and political system occurres, with the conversion to a new settlement pattern organized around little sites with multifunctional buildings and this change is also identified by the growth of settled sites producing red-brown pottery, like DROBs and principally RBWW. Not much can be said as regards the end of the Early Bronze Age period. Findings and strata of the second half of 3rd millennium or dating to the last centuries have been exposed at few sites but none provides a clear stratigraphic sequence or fairly well articulated contexts. In general, the remains are poor compared with those of the following Middle Bronze Age and cover marginal areas of the site. The valley was almost devoid of significant settlements during this period, probably because the settlement pattern was substantially different from the Middle Bronze Age pattern and/or not easily recognizable archeologically. Some sites produced very sparse evidence (tombs, portion of walls and floors, pot-sherds) but no substantial layers have been found up to now. In fact the thin layers could indicate brief and intermittent periods of occupation. Of course there might have been considerable 3rd millennium sites not yet excavated beneath some of the major and important mounds but as yet there is no evidence for them and the possible finding of large settlements in Pornak and Pir Hüseyin do not change the general picture of a rural landscape with evanescent presence of very small sites, as for the valley along the river. Probably during the passage between the 3rd and 2nd millennium there was a reorganization of settlements and populations in the valley with an increase of settled sites, after important but unclear changes in the whole region that stimulated the growth of the social complexity among the groups inhabiting the Upper Tigris, both sedentary and mobile segments of local society, producing new forms of interaction between the communities, control and management of the resources. In this period a social structure more complex than loose village organizations that probably characterized the sociopolitical landscape of the 3rd millennium was developed. The portions of buildings and composite architectural complexes, dating to the Middle Bronze Age, found for example at Giricano, Salat Tepe, Hirbemerdon Tepe, but also the remains of Kavuşan and Üçtepe showing similar architectural features, suggest a community planning with the possible existence of a form of control over productive resources or organization of the local economic life, but not a level of complexity implying the subordination to a centralizing power. Architecture and artifacts do not confirm the presence of elites but indicate small communities organizing the management of local economy on a modest scale. We do not have elements to recognize a hierarchy between these sites yet but it seems that these played a role of coordination and were centers of attraction for populations; for processing products and storing commodities coming from herds, agriculture, hunting and intermountain trade as well as for communal and ritual performances. The growing of settlement density can be considered as an indicator of a socio-economic reorganization of indigenous groups. This regenerative process can be linked to the establishment of a commercial network and/or to a change in the balance between main subsistence activities or to other external stimuli as the arrival of newcomers. Not less important could have been the changing relation between the two segments, settled (mainly farmers) and mobile (transhumant shepherds and nomads) of the same group or tribe, developing an integrated economy and an enlarged socio-political system, At present we can only speculate about what the development of the indigenous society holds. The relation between these two segments, settled and mobile of the same group or tribe, developing an integrated economy and an enlarged socio-political system, was at the base of a new society inaugurated at the end of the 3rd millennium in the Upper Tigris. It is possible to imagine a scenario, simplifying a more complex process, where groups of shepherds, nomadic or semi-nomadic, who have lived in this area as ancient texts and modern studies confirm, decided to convert to agricultural activities and village life, for different motives, settling in one of the areas that for centuries they had used during the seasonal migrations and transhumance between mountains, valleys and steppes; whereas the other part of the group continued to bring herds along traditional routes interacting with the sedentary communities. The available textual documentation is meager and does not permit to establish yet the modalities of interaction with the southern city states as well as the involvement within commercial circuits. This new organization of the social and economic structure of the local community is a trait of the Middle Bronze Age society that in the course of the 2nd millennium and then during the 1st millennium, will keep firmly a local character or will be occasionally oriented towards eastern Anatolia in spite of the pressure and attempts at stable colonization by southern empires. An important implication of social and historical significance is involved in the role assumed by the different components and members of the local society in this archaeological landscape. If this outline is correct, the scarcity of sites dated to the 3rd millennium or otherwise, the low visibility of these settlements, might point to unstable occupation: a mobile, semi-nomadic or nomadic style of life was for most of the population the best adaptation to the surrounding regional environment. We can question if in the case of the Upper Tigris river valley it has been the trade network to generate the rise of complexity or dynamics internal to local groups (maybe stimulated after the Akkadians established their influence over the region) have had been more effective to prompt the transformation of local society. The valley represents a distinct unit from the surrounding regions with regard to its material culture and particularly its pottery tradition. Actually, the particular setting of Tigris culture, the lack of textual records for several centuries, the difficulties met by Mesopotamians to control these territories, and the characteristics of the material remains could suggest that the area was a place of a well-defined cultural and maybe political entity and resulting in the changes at the end of 3rd millennium that we can recognize in the growth of the settlements characterized by the presence of red-brown ceramics. If the archaeological remains emerged through the excavation in the Upper Tigris have to be considered direct expression of the Khurrian world is at the moment an intriguing hypothesis that in absence of textual evidence cannot be demonstrated. However the results of the recent research in the Upper Tigris provide new fundamental evidence for a better definition of the communities inhabiting the south-eastern Anatolia between the end of 3rd and the beginning of 2nd mill. BC that played an important, yet poorly defined role within the historical scenario of the Ancient Near East.
