Third and last part of the basic work 'Thinking about religion' by Valeer Neckebrouck Met Part III. Contemporary Perspectives, author Valeer Neckebrouck has come to the conclusion of the chronologically conceived series Thinking about Religion. Anthropological theory and religion. The study of the anthropology of religion is discussed in this last part from the most leading contemporary models and perspectives. The secularization theories, postmodernism, feminism, neo-Darwinism and the cognitive anthropology of religion are discussed in detail, but also thinkers such as René Girard, Walter Burkert, Edward O. Wilson and Richard Dawkins are reviewed. The treatment of contemporary theoretical perspectives in the anthropological study of religion concerns areas of research that are still in constant flux, insights that are still in full development. Almost every day new discoveries are made in biology, some of which require a radical revision of insights that were previously regarded as established achievements. Because our knowledge of biology and neurology is constantly evolving, its balance has to be rewritten again and again. With this third part of the Thinking about religion series, Valeer Neckebrouck has undeniably made an important contribution to this. In this final volume Neckebrouck presents the reader with a thorough analysis and critical evaluation of the various theoretical systems with which great and lesser minds from recent Western cultural history have attempted to clarify the enigmatic phenomenon of "religion" from an anthropological point of view. For anyone interested in the phenomenon of "religion" and wanting to know how anthropologists have thought about religion throughout history, this trilogy is an indispensable and very richly detailed reference book. Until now, such a detailed description and critical evaluation of the subject matter has not been available in any language area
Prejudices and stereotypes are as ancient as mankind. Why do we think we can deduce someone's characteristics by their appearance? This book is based on the contested theory of Italian doctor Lombroso on the heredity of criminality. Lombroso stated that criminal behaviour is a part of human nature. He wanted to prove some forms of criminality are hereditary. Facial features, corporal constitution ... as a basis to stigmatise people. But how do we deal with appearance these days, in a multicultural society? Do we still presume 'other' features are 'suspicious'? Is there such a thing as a 'born criminal'? This book also pays attention to phenomena such as physical anthropology, craniometry and phrenology. Exhibition: Museum Dr. Guislain, Ghent, Belgium (14.3.-21.9.2015)
This book tells the story of Utrecht University's colonial past. Ever since the university was founded in 1636, its scholars and students have been involved in various activities in the Dutch colonies of the West and East Indies. There was a great interest in the world of the 'other' far away: the natural world as well as their cultures, languages and religious systems. The basic assumption always was: we are 'developed', they are 'not yet developed'. Superiority served as guiding principle. By the end of the nineteenth century, Utrecht's research activities in the colonies were dominated by biology, medicine, geology, and physical anthropology/anatomy. It was understood to be 'pure research' in the colonies. But it was pure colonial research. The University benefited enormously from those research activities. The latest phase of 'university development cooperation' (since the 1980s), was to some extent a continuation of that approach.

Data from political anthropology, archeology, & history are used to develop an overview of the evolution of political organization up to the point of the emergence of the early state. While evolution is a process of gradual transformation, it is possible to distinguish several broad evolutionary states: egalitarian, rank, stratified, & state society. The evolution of political organization is influenced on the one hand by general forces, such as population growth & pressure, & on the other hand by such specific forces as surplus production, obligations caused by reciprocity, ideological convictions, & kinship type; in interplay, these cause specific types of political organization. Such factors as population pressure, war or threat of war, & conquest seem to play the most important role in the gradual emergence of the state. A necessary condition for this emergence seems to be that existing ideological convictions not be incompatible with hierarchization & centralization. Modified HA.

This volume is the result of a conference at University College London in 2007 which addressed the scale and form of civil defences in early medieval Europe, c. 800-1000. Previous work has largely focussed on individual sites or specific categories of evidence. These papers offer new interdisciplinary perspectives driven by a landscape approach. Several contributions focus on civil defence in England around the time of King Alfred the Great, and together provide a new agenda for the study of Anglo-Saxon military landscapes. European case-studies facilitate a comparative approach to local and regional defensive structures and interpretive paradigms. Topics and themes covered include civil defence landscapes, the organization and form of defensive structures, and the relationships and dynamics between social complexity, militarization, and external threats. With papers ranging from England to Spain and Germany to Scandinavia the volume is of relevance to a range of disciplines including archaeology, history, onomastics, geography, and anthropology
