International audience ; This article is supported by an ethnographical research realized on the field of the mining projects in New-Caledonia, exemplary ground of observation of the cultural misunderstanding engendered by the western and continental representations applied to Oceania. Its subject is to revisit, with regard to this context, communications tools developed by the ICMM, a professional organization grouping the major international companies in the mine and metal industry field, to which adheres two of the mining companies operating in New-Caledonia. We shall be take special interest to the relational approach promoted by the ICMM for the implementation of globalised rules in the Corporate Social Responsibility. Questioning the relevance and the coherence of the standardized and globalized approaches, we shall enlighten the interest of taking into account the local dynamics in the implementation of the Corporate Social Responsibility policies within international companies operating in Océanie.
This thesis deals with the renewal of walking in the urban realm since the last decade. A great number of cities in Europe and abroad have been promoting walking since the year 2000 with renewed energy. This trend accompanies operations of urban renewal through different scales within the integrated framework of new urbanism, transit-oriented development, to match the desire of these urban authorities to make their territory a more walkable place in order to become sustainable and liveable cities. These changes are analysed through the intricated prisma of several urban disciplines, namely geography, sociology and anthropology. A multi-site participant observation methodology has been applied to the case studies of Lausanne, Geneva and Bilbao to extract from their experiences the utmost in walking promotion tools and positive visions for a walkable future. The hypothesis of this work is based on the bold assumption that the scale of the agglomeration is the best scale today to think and plan for walking in our urban scattered environments. Walking is therefore to be considered beyond proximity alone. It is better taken when synergies may evolve from intertwining its nearness dynamics with the potential offered by the scale and speed of other modes of transport, namely public transport and shared modes. Within this framework of thought, the thesis reviews facts and figures as well as best practices in order to give walking the place it deserves within our multimodal world.

International audience ; Many scholars have applied the term trickster (deceiver) as a notion to some characters occupying a prominent place, other times not, insome complex beliefs systems among West African traditional societies. Understanding Eshu, seen as a mediator or translator of Yoruba religion (Nigeria, Benin), will determine other orisha's specificity. The latter are different from one another in the way they are delineated by an intermediary gap. Eshu is the only one who, as a geomantic oracle vector and the interpreter of most of cult-groups authorities, knows predominantly all about the secrets of universe whom he has received no share — the only identified realm has been the market place. As a remarkable figure metwithin the religious system, Eshu means fluctuant values and the reverse (or other)side of institutions. Within the well established religious system order he introducesan important margin of unpredictability or uncertainty that "loosens the ring up".Therefore he sets the whole organized religious system free questioning all thatexists. As an omniscient and ubiquitous agent — whatever are the levels of traditions or religion concerned —, he urged us to consider attentively two phenomena: the sacred primacy found in each component of the social and political system; the need of a stimulating principle to create a new social order. In other words, whether Eshu must be seen as the translator and commissioner of the social order — this one remaining definitely out of reach — after the destruction of a previous social order, he expresses disorder thus creating a new social order. Considering individual or collective worship experiences from a dynamic standpoint Eshu solely and continuously maintains an absolute prerequisite for sacred replication. All these basic characteristics lead us to reconsider the notion of trickster itself and its false and indefeasible reality. This notion will be found firstly as an ever plausible working out keystone whose highlights are similar to mirage or ...
In Memory of the Aymorés: The Subterranean World of the Pataxó Indians, Bahia, Brazil At the base of Monte Pascoal, in the far south of the State of Bahia in Brazil, lives a community of 3,000 Pataxó Indians. They are among the last representatives of the Macro-Gé group, and descend from they who were spread along the coast together with the Tupi when the Portuguese arrived. At that time they were called the Aymorés and their sole name spread terror amongst the villages and trading posts on the coast. Their recent history has been marked by a struggle to reintegrate Monte Pascoal National Park, of which they were driven out fifty years ago. More recently, UNESCO proclaimed this Park a "biosphere reserve" because it is one of the last refuges of the original biodiversity of the "Atlantic Rainforest," which today has been reduced to a shadow of its former self. Although the Pataxó's demands are imbued with ethno-ecological arguments, which portray the redeemed figure of the wild Indian, guardian of the wisdom of the natural world, we can detect a guiding principle which suggest that a "natural area" cannot be considered for itself, and needs the same kind of transformation that a piece of meat which must be cooked before it can be eaten. Therefore, regardless of the extent of environmental awareness mobilized around the issue of the National Park and its survival, a set of Pataxó cosmological values results in an outcome contrary to the one which was hoped for. Little by little "uncontrolled" fires burn away the forest as local crafts are being replaced by increasingly mechanized production of wooden pieces. The current destruction of the Monte Pascoal National Park's tree cover cannot be understood only under pragmatically economic consideration. The destruction of these forest remnants is "programmed" in the execration of the Savage that is part of the Pataxó's religious affirmation as Catholics and their "civilized" vision of raw nature. Undoing the skein of stereotypical constructions, like the mythical figures of the Naked Jaguar or the Man-Beast, altogether paradoxical and dualistic - allow us to apprehend this cosmological consistency, which skirts the confines of analyses based on concepts of ethnogenesis and invention of tradition. From this standpoint, this book falls within a structural perspective, in which a narratological analysis is applied to various types of discourse and stories, postulating that their totality forms a single albeit discontinuous narrative thread. However, today, the focus of ethnology is ever-shifting and falls within a much broader issue -- managing a global environmental crisis. Ethnic re-composition, political action, social disaggregation or community re-aggregation based on the concepts of tradition and respecting biodiversity shape part of the ethnographic reality. Attempts to delimit the scope of these issues are astonishingly complex and require several explanatory diagrams, conceptual frameworks and several scales, ranging from the individual to regional and political institutional dynamics. We shall come to understand that this consideration of contexts draws my position near to that of "micro-history": we can and we must historicize representations so as to fit them into a continuous dialectic with the reality experienced by the groups we happen to know and study.
Of Illegitimacy -- The HDR consists of three volumes. The first one is a report on the work carried out over the last fifteen years which gives its title to the set, Of Illegitimacy (Volume 1, 124 p.). It proposes an epistemological reflection on a research career, on reflexivity and the social science perspective from several research themes : the anthropological history of Palestinian refugees; gender, body and affects; secular and religious feminisms in Arab and Muslim societies; images and regimes of visibility and invisibility; borders, confinement and mobility in Israeli-Palestinian spaces; prison in Israel/Palestine; the challenges of narrative in the social sciences and post-disciplinarity around documentary cinema; engagement and alternative citizenships in Palestine and the Middle East. The issue of illegitimacy is at the core of this analysis. It deals with illegitimacy as an approach and with the illegitimate ones, those who are out of frame. It sets out the contours of an epistemology of illegitimacy constructed from a radical feminist positioning and a cinematographic epistemology. The second volume is an original manuscript, The Prison Web. A History of Imprisonment in Palestine (504 p., forthcoming), and finally the third one is a a selection of articles and works (624 p.).Since 1967, in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, incarceration in Israeli prisons has strongly impacted personal experiences and collective history. Massive arrests for political reasons have over time created a Prison web. A Prison web that is as much reality as it is virtuality: a possibility of imprisonment, a suspension without contours. It is both visible and always out of frame. It stands as an uncertainty. The penal practices applied to Palestinians residing in the Occupied Territories are decisive control mechanisms that contribute to a bordering system that is anchored on a specific mobility regime. They are part of the management of the nation's borders. Such borders are non-linear, have multiplied, are partly dematerialized, mobile and networked. At the same time, they are individualized and endless. Node and nucleus of the rhizome of control, the prison is not an isolate. Because of the porosity between the Inside and the Outside of the prison facilities, it is a key place to analyze the political processes and mobilizations in Palestine, and the prison citizenships that are developed there. The effects of this intertwining of Inside and Outside extend not only to the community of prisoners and former prisoners, but also to partisan and activist circles, to society, to Palestinian communities in the West Bank, Jerusalem, Gaza and Israel, and to the inhabitants of the occupied Golan Heights. Over time, this porosity has melted the Inside and Outside into a shared prison ethos. The Prison web has captured territorial and relational space, bodies and minds. This text addresses the borders between these spaces. It analyzes the relations, the interconnections between the Inside and the Outside. It deals with the prison subjectivities from 1967 onwards, through generations of inmates. The omnipresence of the prison has strongly influenced subjectivities in the Territories. As a socialization process, prison is incorporated. It affects deeply gender relations, masculinities, feminities and personal experiences. For some, it is an endless place whose hold lasts post-mortem.
International audience ; Anthropology of rural spaces frequently deals with vernacular house considering the heritage construction processes induced by retrofitting. Emerging approaches based on sociology of energy have however seldom be used. In such a context, the paper aims at demonstrating how heritage, home energy retrofit requirements and homeowners' technical practices articulate towards the stakes of ancient houses. The research is based on a socio-anthropological field work on rammed earth houses retrofitting. It was implemented in Nord Isère region between January and October 2014 with the contribution of advisory structures and local authorities. Indeed, if energy is seldom the core of the retrofitting process of these ancient houses, it appears at all the stages of the process, from conception to the use of the building. Therefore, the position here is not to consider owners adaptation to energy efficient buildings, but to understand how the analysis of retrofitting process of ancient buildings – often considered to be inherently opposed to the technical conception of efficiency – can help us to consider new sociotechnical networks, potentiality of adjustments and dialog in the constitution of building cultures that could help leading to efficient rehabilitation processes. After the analysis of homeowners-guided visits of homes under work or already retrofitted, the paper describes the "bricolage" implemented by the inhabitants in the retrofitting process. When applied to ancient houses, they appear to be involved in a sociotechnical project based not only on energy but on the houses and households features, temporality, livability or aesthetics. They seem to lead to the constitution of distinctive "homeowner's knowledge". Thus, bricolage expresses both in the practice of self- retrofitting, based on different dynamics of "Doing-it yourself" (economical, experiential, identifying) and on adjustments in the projects logics and processes, in the organization of the works and worksite, in the practices and uses of the ancient building and finally in energetic compositions. Comfort and use before, during and after the retrofitting process show a global thought on the mechanics of the ancient house and allow adjustments that go beyond technical aspects, to include seasonal spaces management, and energy sobriety. It shows the complex articulation between energetic issues and global retrofitting process that cannot be seen only in technical or behavioral terms. The analysis expands then to include adjustment in advisors and craftsmen professional practices toward existing or implied norms, considering those norms fit hardly with the variety of ancient houses materials and structures. Through these adjustments, professionals can operate alternatively as mediators, specialists, advisors or trainers in their interactions with the inhabitants. Research results finally questions the knowledge dynamics involved in the development of energetic innovations linked to vernacular houses retrofitting and the potential emergence of new means of cooperation between inhabitants and professionals around the construction of dialogic building cultures.
Digitalization in Sub-Saharan Africa enhanced the accessibility of communications by the majority of the poor who had been excluded among others from social media, independent information channels, mobile banking and e-commerce. The creation of new economic opportunities, e.g. the pay-as-you-go business, and increased flow of information also boosted people's self-esteem, sense of belonging and citizenship. The smartphone became the main source of internet access which also bridged the divide between urban and rural communities. Thus, mobile telecommunications contributed positively to economic growth even in less developed regions, and there is apparently still ample space for further improvement. Yet, Africans were also confronted with new forms of the digital divide between the poor and the rich, between advanced and less advanced African countries, as well as between Africa and the rest of the world. Moreover, the digitalization of the public sphere became a double-edged sword. Autocratic governments like Sudan and Togo shut down the internet during elections to facilitate the rigging of the polls. The lack of transparency and objectivity fuelled fake news which rapidly spread in social media, notably in times of the Corona crisis. Last, but not least, not everybody surfing in the internet had the same access to quality information. For example, disinformation was supported clandestinely by foreign powers to destabilize political regimes, or spy software was provided to governments to control the opposition. Both false news in social media and spy-software impeded poverty relieve in Africa significantly.
Dealing with the colonial history of Hawai'i and California from 1778, this dissertation focuses on the transformation of the Hawaiian custom he'e nalu into a global surf system. This analysis asks if there a break or a continuity of Hawaiian surfing in the 19th century, and what are the terms and conditions of its diffusion as a global surf system in the 21st century. Three investigating methods have been applied: an analysis of traveling literature in Hawai'i, compared with a study of Hawaiian newspapers in the 19th century ; a recording of fifty semi-directed interviews to grasp issues related to appropriating surfing in California after 1945 ; and a multi-sited participant observation for thirty months in Hawai'i and California, between 2009 and 2016, to found out about the contemporary historicization of surfing. Three main conclusions emerged from this data analysis. First, the introduction of Hawai'i in the world system in the 19th century fostered the birth of a Hawaiian national identity, that reaffirmed traditional customs, such as surfing. Then, with the advent of seaside tourism in the 20th century, Hawai'i became a touristic model, based on staging surfing and its appropriation by the West. To this regard, Waikīkī is a popular case study, and its development pattern has been reproduced in Californian cities, such as Huntington Beach. Eventually, from the 1950s, surfing has been exported to the world, thanks to the growth of its subculture and professional sport, mass media, and the democratization of seaside tourism.
In the palace of Clement VI and Innocent VI as a sacred area, the image which has an exegetic function is like an ideogram based on medieval texts. With their Anglo-Saxon bestiary register, the images have their own language with a complex mechanism of creation. This language is in relation with a specific system which is decoded through the use of the medieval library of the Avignon papacy, with the Etymologiae of Isidor of Seville and the De Universo of Raban Maur. Thanks to these images, the expression of the pope's power on the soul is here printed on the wall, sculpted in the stone and written in the holy palace of Avignon. This is a luxury demonstration where images reflect a politic aim to claim the power of two famous popes; Clement VI appearing as a resistant of anti-Semitism. To obtain these results, a new iconographic method applied to archaeology of buildings has been developed for archaeology of monumental image.
