Since 2013, the Middle East has experienced a double trend of chaos and civil war, on the one hand, and the return authoritarianism, on the other. That convergence has eclipsed the political transations that occurred in the countries whose regimes were toppled in 2011, as if they were merely footnotes to a narrative that naturally led from an 'Arab Spring' to an 'Arab Winter.' This volume aims at rehabilitating those transitions, by considering them as expressions of a 'revolutionary moment' whose outcome was never pre-determined, but depended on the choices of a large range of actors. It brings together leading scholars of Arab politics to adopt comparative approach to a few crucial aspects of those transitions: constitional debates, the question of transitional justice, the evolution of civil-military relations, and the role of specific actors, both domestic and international.

Bridging the psychology literature on reasoning and the political science literature on protest, this book systematically traces how decisions about participating in the Arab Spring were made. It shows that decisions to join the uprisings were 'hot,' meaning they were based on positive emotions, while decisions to stay at home were 'cool,' meaning they were based on safety considerations. 'Hot Contention, Cool Abstention' adds to the extensive literature on political uprisings, offering insights on how and why movements start, stall and evolve.

"The self-immolation of Mohammed Bouazizi in Tunisia in December 2010 heralded the arrival of the 'Arab Spring, ' a startling, yet not unprecedented, era of profound social and political upheaval. The meme of the Arab Spring is characterised by bottom-up change, or the lack thereof, and its effects are still unfurling today. The Routledge Handbook of the Arab Spring seeks to provide a departure point for ongoing discussion of a fluid phenomenon on a plethora of topics, including: - Contexts and contests of democratisation - The sweep of the Arab Spring - Egypt - Women and the Arab Spring - Agents of change and the technology of protest - Impact of the Arab Spring in the wider Middle East and further afield Collating a wide array of viewpoints, specialisms, biases, and degrees of proximity and distance from events that shook the Arab world to its core, the Handbook is written with the reader in mind, to provide students, practitioners, diplomats, policy-makers and lay readers with contextualization and knowledge, and to set the stage for further discussion of the Arab Spring"--

; With its impact on the change in the concept of security, the Arab Spring has an important place in history. With the advent of the Arab Spring, the main aim has been centered around investigating the different aspects of the topic. The focus has also been on discussing the topic in terms of the theories of Security Studies, the importance of which has been further understood. The main objective of the present study is to discuss the community structure of North African countries and the changes that took place before and after the Arab Spring in terms of security. The study focuses on the period from prior to Colonialism until 2012. It is possible to gain knowledge about the process by extensively analyzing the topic. The democracy indexes that are used to analyze whether the process was democratic or manipulative, will provide some detailed information on the condition of North African countries. By employing visual sociology, it is also aimed to bring in a new and different perspective to the analysis. Within the framework of the Copenhagen School, which has an important place in allowing a better understanding of the growing perception of security after the Cold War, the study also aimed to discuss the Arab Spring in terms of the Securitization and Regional Security Complex Theory. The peace and conflict studies of Johan Galtung and the theoretical framework of Barry Buzan will provide a better understanding of the topic under study. The SWOT analysis, which is often covered in business studies, is applied in the field of Security Studies. Transformation of North Africa's contemporary period after the Arab Spring, is investigated in the context of Security Studies. To make this transformation clear, the focus of this study is on the time period after the Arab Spring (2014-2019), and the global terrorism-global peace indexes of this time period are used. With the data retrieved from the indexes and the obtained results, the current security condition of North Africa is examined. The Arab Spring, which has a significant place in international relations, will be discussed in detail by covering the literature of Security Studies and the other social sciences disciplines.

This book is based on the papers presented at the "International Workshop on Democratic and Constitutional Transitions in the Middle East," organized by İstanbul Şehir University on 11-12 May 2012. The Arab uprisings have been analyzed in detail in this volume along with the questions below: How to explain the sudden eruption of the uprisings? Are they protests without sufficient organization to overthrow the authoritarian systems? Is the discourse of protest Arab-specific or does it touch on apparently universal values of liberalism, democracy, participation, and human security? What is this "democratic transition" that inspired the Arab awakenings, when "democracy" can mean so many different things to people? What kind of a state and economic system will these countries have? Is Islam compatible with different forms of government? Can Turkey serve as a model for the democratizing Arab countries?

Why did Tunisian protests following the self-immolation of Mohammed Bouazizi lead to a massive wave of uprisings across the entire Arab world? Who participated in those protests, and what did they hope to achieve? Why did some leaders fall in the face of popular mobilization while others found ways to survive? And what have been the lasting results of the contentious politics of 2011 and 2012? The Arab uprisings pose stark challenges to the political science of the Middle East, which for decades had focused upon the resilience of entrenched authoritarianism, the relative weakness of civil soci
A concise guide on how and why the Arab Spring failed, this book presents a detailed narrative of events in the Arab World, from the moment Mohammed Bouazizi lit himself - and the region - on fire. It presents an original investigation into why the Arab Spring cannot be seen as a wave of democratization, due to the contribution of intolerant Islamist actors in its failure, through their application of a distinctive conception of "the good" inconsistent with liberal democracy
The most challenging question today for the citizens of any country in the Gulf region is whether it is heading in the right direction to become a durable, sustainable system, fully supported by its people and capable of being defended from internal and external threats. In The Arab Spring and the Gulf States, Mohamed A.J. Althani, a former minister in the Qatari government, analyses the domestically important areas of demography, security, provision of food and water, and the political and economic systems of the Arab countries at the centre of the turmoil that has spread throughout the regi.
