Nuestros primos remotos de Colombia. Percepciones palestinas de la emigracion hacia America Latina
In: Foro internacional: revista trimestral, Band 54, Heft 3
ISSN: 0185-013X
Arabic migrants from Palestine began to arrive in Colombia in the 1940s; their linguistic, social and cultural categorizations allow insight into the critical aspects of their developing identity, which became consolidated in Colombia. There is a paradoxical reciprocity between contemporary Palestine and these migrants, and in the two-way relationship between the crossed gazes of the Palestinians in Colombia as 'distant cousins' of those who have embarked on a return journey. The PLO's interest in supporting these migrant populations in Latin America is one of the keystones in the debate on the flow of cultural and symbolic exchange between these two groups as they renew contact. Mujeres y revueltas en el mundo arabe: historia y orientalismos
In: Foro internacional: revista trimestral, Band 54, Heft 3
ISSN: 0185-013X
The media coverage of the involvement of women in the uprisings in the Arab world reveals both discontinuities and synergies between local and Western perceptions of the revolts. The presence of women in the protests gives rise to contradictory readings rooted in a surprisingly robust orientalism. Although in certain circumstances Arabic women appropriated Western feminist reference points, the media emphasis on parallels with iconic landmarks in women's liberation in the west serves to present Middle Eastern women as mimicking the same path towards female modernity. Finally, the media coverage also often emptied the actions of women of their radical content, thereby reducing political gestures to colorful local tradition. Adapted from the source document.

Islam, violencia y etica democratica
In: Revista internacional de filosofía política, Heft 21, S. 36-55
ISSN: 1132-9432
Argues that the Arabic nations, particularly those of the Magreb, limited their modernization following liberation from European colonialism to science, technology, & economics. In an attempt to retain their non-Western identity, they embraced an ideological form of Islam that does not reflect the religion's humanism & tolerance. This has produced totalitarian, nonsecular states that suppress the social expression of tolerant forms of Islam by the majority of their citizens. This political phenomenon, combined with Western leaders' misrepresentation of Islam as an inherently fundamentalist & violent religion, eclipses the genuine Islamic religion defined by brotherhood, faith, & charity. The irony is that Islam, perhaps more than any other world religion, embraces democratic values. It is concluded that Arabic nations could politically modernize if they drew on the traditional Islamic values that revolve around tolerance & diversity. Adapted from the source document.
El futuro de la organizacion regional y de los procesos de integracion en el mundo arabe
In: Revista de relaciones internacionales, Heft 66, S. 15-27
ISSN: 0185-0814
The ideological basis on which pan-Arabist nationalism was sustained is criticized & the possibility of a new regional integration process that could be an alternative scheme of Arabic unity is considered. Requirements that such an integration process must meet in order to be suitable in the Middle East are analyzed. A possible scenario of cooperation that could shape a regional reorganization of the Arab world is constructed. Adapted from the source document.
Argelia: el Frente Islamico de Salvacion y el poder (Analisis del movimiento fundamentalista argelino)
In: Revista de relaciones internacionales, Heft 66, S. 53-69
ISSN: 0185-0814
An examination of the FIS (Islamic Salvation Front) victory in Algeria & the gradual emergence of fundamentalism in North Africa. It is pointed out that rebirth of the integration tendency is not an isolated phenomenon, nor exclusive to Islam. Its characteristics, differences, & similarities with other movements are analyzed. Various Islamic integration trends are reviewed, as are Algerian fundamentalism & factors that allowed the FIS victory in the Dec 1991 elections. It is suggested that the elections showed clearly the fall of modernizing tendencies & projects in political Arabic life. 3 Tables. Adapted from the source document.
Medios de comunicacion y actitudes en una sociedad mediatica global
In: Psicologia politica, Heft 26, S. 57-72
ISSN: 1138-0853
Technological development stands out among the most influential factors in the globalization process. This development provides both the spread & universalization of access to the media & the immediate dissemination of great amounts of information. This has resulted in a worldwide homogenization of leisure time, which seems to affect in a prominent way the attitudes in societies that are culturally very different. In this report we examine how the media have a bearing on the attitudes of societies that show very distinct cultural features, paying special attention to the examples provided by sub-Saharan Africa, the Arabic World, & the most developed societies. 3 Tables, 16 References.
