L'Italia è sempre stata caratterizzata da un livello di partecipazione associativa molto basso, se paragonato ad altri Paesi europei. Il dato continua ad impressionare gli osservatori, fin dalla ricerca di Almond e Verba sulla cultura civica [1963, p. 246]. In un contesto in cui l'integrazione politica era ampiamente basata su culture politiche di partito, la maggior parte delle reti associative era collaterale ai partiti politici di massa [Biorcio, 2007, p. 189]. Per questo, per discutere i tratti contemporanei dell'associazionismo, dobbiamo adottare una prospettiva di medio periodo, e analizzare i cambiamenti che si sono succeduti nel corso degli ultimi due decenni, e più precisamente a partire da "Tangentopoli" e dal crollo dei partiti di massa. Il capitolo discute le caratteristiche principali di chi partecipa, nonché i luoghi di impegno, mobilitazione e socialità, e conclude presentando le principali sfide della partecipazione associativa nella società italiana (mantenerne la vitalità, la difficoltà di voice e critica alla sfera politica, la partecipazione alla programmazione delle politiche). Il capitolo discute anche le "vecchie" sfide interpretative che continuano ad interrogare la ricerca sociologica. Il grande tema delle "determinanti" del coinvolgimento associativo torna di attualità: se le variabili socio-professionali classiche aiutano a comprendere la distribuzione interna al mondo dei partecipanti, occorre analizzare meglio le ragioni dei livelli così bassi di partecipazione in Italia. Lungi da essere una questione che ha trovato risposte esaustive nei lavori di Almond e Verba prima, e di Putnam in seguito, e di molta ricerca italiana fin dall'inizio degli anni '90, il quesito vede tutt'ora la ricerca impegnata ad esplorare nel dettaglio i fattori contestuali dell'azione collettiva e a "immaginare" diverse spiegazione. Diversi fattori contestuali sono stati studiati separatamente negli ultimi anni: la collocazione geografica e spaziale delle associazioni, la presenza - o meno - di canali istituzionali di mediazione degli interessi e di accesso ai processi decisionali o deliberativi, le principali fratture su cui si strutturano i conflitti contemporanei, la dinamica economica (non solo sul piano del reddito ma anche della valorizzazione delle credenziali scolastiche e delle competenze acquisite), i repertori di azione e di coordinamento legittimi e maggiormente diffusi nel territorio di riferimento (ad esempio il ricorso ad eventi, o la costruzione di luoghi stabili di socialità, o la fornitura di servizi e beni pubblici, la protesta via internet, la costruzione di luoghi di confronto, le campagne di consumerismo politico, e così via). Nei prossimi anni la sfida consisterà nel mostrare il modo in cui questi fattori si combinano in ciascun contesto territoriale, e nell'incrementare la ricerca comparativa in proposito (.).

Over the last two decades, the role and size of the nonprofit sector has increased significantly. Many Queensland nonprofit organisations are incorporated by the Associations Incorporation Act 1981 (Qld). The article suggests both broad policy reforms and specific amendments to the Act for the better facilitation of nonprofit associations. This is timely as the Government Department responsible for their administration is currently reviewing the Act. The article recommends that reform of the Act is necessary to facilitate the appropriate legislative and regulatory environment of such nonprofit associations. These reforms involve the consideration of some broad policy issues as well as specific legislative amendments to improve the regulatory environment for incorporated associations.

The international comparison shows that particularly in the Nordic countries, people participate in associations on a vast scale. However, it is also important to note that while the old politicalideological associations have lost some of their importance in Finland, several new kinds of associations have emerged. Thus it is relevant to ask whether connections between trust and association activity vary between different types of associations. Empirical analysis shows that the members of only certain types of associations – charity associations, sports associations, and cultural associations – were found to be more trusting after various background variables had been elaborated. It was found that, in particular, the number of association memberships has a connection with a stronger level of trust. Even though memberships in associations have a statistically significant link to the trust that people experience, the percentages of variance explained are low.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Raymond Nakai, a Navajo Indian, was born in 1918 in Lukachukai, Arizona, on the Navajo Reservation. Raymond Nakai is noted as being the first modern Navajo political leader serving as Chairman of the Navajo Nation from 1963-1971. As chairman, the issues most important during his tenure were self determination in Navajo Education, reservation unemployment, developing Navajo economy, further development of the tribal government and improving relations with the federal government and surrounding states. Nakai had much unprecedented success as Navajo Tribal Chairman: In 1967 the Navajo Nation Bill of Rights was created, in 1968 Navajo Community College opened being the first tribally controlled community college, the Tribal Scholarship Trust was developed, relations with off reservation natural resource companies began, he was supportive of religious freedom of the Native American Church on the Navajo Reservation. Raymond Nakai led an active personal and political life and was an innovative leader for the Navajo People. The Raymond Nakai Collection contains material documenting his activities as Chairman of the Navajo Nation from 1963 - 1971.

In a context of profound changes in public policy, this thesis investigates the relationship between associations and public authorities by consolidating an approach in terms of interactions. Relations between these two entities are often considered unilaterally, pointing solely the increasing influence of public intervention on the functioning and projects of non-profit organizations, whereas this thesis looks also at the impact of associations on government, which is less explored in the literature. Associations providing social and "médico-social" services in the Languedoc-Roussillon Region are studied by a combination from qualitative and quantitative data. The theoretical perspective mobilized is a socio-economic one. It is built on the criticism of economic standard current according to which associations are perceived only through their economic role of service providers. By considering the political role of associations as well, this thesis adopts a more complex approach. Moreover, this approach is historically and institutionally contextualized, as suggested by the Institutionalist theory. The analysis of the changes in the regulation of the welfare state since 1945, leads to the characterization of the current model that oscillates between an enhanced supervision and a competitive tendering of the associations. Finally, the exploration of organizational and strategic features of the associations highlights, beyond rationalization, their diversity in the studied interactive process. ; Dans un contexte de profondes transformations de l'action publique, cette thèse étudie les relations entre associations et pouvoirs publics, en consolidant une approche en termes d'interactions. La perspective théorique mobilisée est socio-économique et s'appuie sur la critique du courant économique standard qui ne perçoit les associations qu'à travers leur rôle économique de prestataire de services. Cette thèse adopte ainsi une perspective plus complexe, en considérant également le rôle politique des associations. Dans ce cadre, elles exercent également une fonction de porte-parole des personnes dont les besoins sont laissés de côté par les politiques. Aussi, l'approche est contextualisée, historiquement et institutionnellement, comme suggéré par la démarche institutionnaliste. Sont ainsi étudiées les évolutions dans la régulation de l'État-providence depuis 1945 pour aboutir à la caractérisation du modèle actuel, oscillant entre encadrement renforcé et mise en concurrence des associations. L'exploration des dimensions organisationnelles et stratégiques des associations permet enfin de mettre en évidence, au-delà de la rationalisation, la diversité des positionnements associatifs dans leurs relations aux pouvoirs publics, là où les acteurs sont souvent considérés de façon homogène et non différenciée.
