La presente ricerca ha come finalità l'esposizione della storia degli ospedali civili presenti a Pola attraverso il XIX e la prima metà del XX secolo. Sono state analizzate tutte le circostanze legate alla loro fondazione e sviluppo insieme alle complesse vicende che hanno interessato le descritte strutture ospedaliere attraverso i decenni. Il materiale è stato raccolto attraverso un'attenta ricerca archivistica e bibliografica che ha permesso di far luce sull'assistenza ospedaliera della Provincia dell'Istria nell'arco temporale trattato. La prima casa di ricovero comunale di Pola fu fondata nel 1842, mentre il primo ospedale civico risale al 1875. Lo straordinario sviluppo urbano raggiunto da Pola nell'ultimo decennio del XIX secolo rese ben presto necessaria la costruzione di un vasto complesso ospedaliero che fu innalzato sul colle di S. Michele e solennemente inaugurato il 6 ottobre 1896. Il 3 gennaio 1904 la struttura sanitaria passò in proprietà alla Provincia dell'Istria dando vita all'Ospedale provinciale di Pola. La ricostruzione della storia ospedaliera civile di Pola ha permesso di individuare le croniche difficoltà attraversate dall'assistenza sanitaria provinciale. Esse furono dovute principalmente a problemi di carattere finanziario ed organizzativo che inevitabilmente pesarono sulla qualità delle cure mediche a disposizione della popolazione. ; Prva ustanova za smještaj bolesnika u Puli utemeljena je 1842., a nalazila se u jednoj zgradi u Ulici Sergia (međutim, počela je djelovati tek 1844.). Nova impozantna zgrada Mornaričke bolnice (K.u.K. Marinespital), prvi moderni bolnički kompleks u Puli, svečano je otvoren 1861. Prva gradska bolnica u pravom smislu riječi počela je djelovati 1875. (ceremonija otvaranja održana je 1. siječnja) u zgradi podignutoj u bivšoj Ulici Giovia, tik iza Arene. U okviru bolnice je uspostavljena i ubožnica za siromašne. Gradska uprava je odlučila podignuti novu zdravstvenu strukturu na sjeveroistočnoj padini brda Sv. Mihovila, koja je svečano otvorena 6. listopada 1896. U prvoj fazi izgradnje bolnica je zauzimala površinu od 28.000 m². Unutar tog prostora nalazilo se sveukupno osam zgrada, od kojih je pet bilo namijenjeno prihvatu približno 300 bolesnika, a preostale tri za prateće usluge. Godine 1903. dogovorena je prodaja bolnice Pokrajini Istri. Službena primopredaja održana je 3. siječnja 1904. Nova je uprava donijela važne promjene u pravilima rada, ali je pogotovo izvršila prenamjene i proširenja kako bi ju pretvorila u moderni zdravstveni sustav, što je u stvari i bila u ono vrijeme. ; The purpose of this study is to present the history of civil hospitals present in Pula during the Austrian period. All circumstances which are related to their founding and development have been analysed, together with a number of complex events which had influenced them. Careful archivial and bibliographic research has made it possible to present the above mentioned material which explains the most important aspects of hospital care in the Province of Istria in the processed period. The first communal sanatorium in Pola-Pula was founded in 1842, while the first city hospital was built in 1875. The extraordinary urban development of Pula in the last decade of the 19th century had led to an urgent need of building a bigger hospital complex which was built on the hill of St. Mihovil and solemnly opened 6th October, 1896. On the day of 3rd January, 1904 the complete medical institution became the property of the Province of Istria thus establishing the Provincial hospital of Pola-Pula.

This introductory overview of his most recent writings is primarily intended for those who are interested in the contribution of Jewish-Austrian literature to the current European debate on the rise of far-right movements and ideologies. Rabinovici's provocative point of views in the interview shed light on changing concepts of Jewish identity in a global world, on the link between Israel and the Jewish diaspora, on the roots of new, yet not less dangerous forms of antisemitism, and on the impasse in the process of European cultural memory.

Il contributo propone alcune riflessioni sul concetto di confine e sul rapporto fra confini e rappresentazione cartografica con riferimento al territorio trentino. Nello specifico, l'analisi si sviluppa nello studio di testimonianze cartografiche che, dal XVII al XX secolo, hanno accompagnato le controversie confinarie fra due comunità divise da un "limes" politico, dapprima imperiale (Tirolo-Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia), in seguito internazionale (Tirolo-Italia), oggi amministrativo (Trentino-Veneto). La secolare "causa Lastarolli", protrattasi per quasi ottocento anni, ha lasciato, di fatto, fonti documentali e cartografiche che permettono di ricostruire le sentenze, gli appelli e i trattati internazionali prodotti per la determinazione dei confini fra il comune di Folgaria (TN) e il comune di Lastebasse (VI). Questa intricata vicenda giudiziaria non si è placata nemmeno con l'annessione del Trentino al Regno d'Italia, alimentandosi spesso di contraddizioni e lungaggini burocratiche che hanno sviluppato gli interessi geo-politici e geo-economici di diversi attori territoriali. È nel 2008 che la causa trova la sua conclusione formale, con un compromesso costoso quanto discutibile. Il percorso metodologico suggerito prevede di ricostruire la trama di quei conflitti, attraverso l'utilizzo congiunto di fonti documentali e cartografiche storiche. Si tenterà, in tal modo, di esaminare da un lato le modalità di rappresentazione cartografica e simbolica dei segni del confine, dall'altro di comprendere il mutamento di sen - so che, alle diverse scale territoriali e nel corso del tempo, quel confine è andato assumendo, fino a rappresentare oggi un discusso spazio di progettualità nell'ottica di uno sviluppo turistico-economico. Il confine, dunque, mantiene la propria centralità storico-geografica, ma viene veicolato in un preciso disegno politico-istituzionale che determina le relazioni fra nuovi attori territoriali. ; The work aims to reflect about border concept and analyze relations between borders and cartography referring to Trentino area. In specific case, the paper develops the study of some representations (from XVII to XX century) that have characterized legal disputes between two communities separated by a political boundary, in the past imperial boundary (Tyrol and Venice Republique), then international one (Tyrol and Italy), today administrative boundary (Trentino-Veneto). The famous "causa Lastarolli", lasted for almost eight hundred years, presents historical maps and documents that deal with sentences and international treaties for definition boundaries between communities of Folgaria (Tn) and Lastebasse (Vi). This complicated legal dispute is continued with annexation of Trentino to Italy and has produced geo-politics and geo-economic interests from different territorial actors. In the 2008 the case was formally concluded with an expensive and debatable submission. The methodological approach aims to piece together conflict plotlines, through historical maps and documents. The purpose consists to analyze from one side symbolical aspects of cartographic representations (border signs), on the other side to understand changing meaning of border on the time and at different territorial scales. Today, this border represents a debatable planning space in the meaning of a touristic and economic development. Border keeps its historical-geographical importance, but it is carried out to a specific political institutional drawing that determines relations among new territorial actors.

Partendo da alcuni studi preliminari sul ruolo della vergogna nella letteratura di Elfriede Jelinek e sostenendosi su alcune teorie di Luce Irigaray ed Hélène Cixous sul pensiero della differenza sessuale, il contributo indaga il binomio "Scham/Schamlosigkeit" in alcuni scritti dell'autrice austriaca, premio Nobel per la letteratura nel 2004. I romanzi Die Klavierspielerin e Lust, qui analizzati insieme ai due saggi Schamgrenzen? Die gewöhnliche Gewalt der weiblichen Hygiene e Schamlos: Die Zeit, mostrano come la violenza nella dimensione privata e apparentemente calma della famiglia austriaca sia profondamente legata alla vergogna e alla spudoratezza. In Jelinek, Scham e Schamlosigkeit assumono una dimensione sempre politica e sessuata con delle conseguenze devastanti sul corpo e sul linguaggio. I rapporti tra i personaggi che l'autrice analizza, non senza toni ironici, fanno emergere delle dinamiche sadomasochistiche e di profonda dipendenza in cui si oppongono due elementi figli del patriarcato, che si nutrono l'un l'altro: il disgusto del maschile da una parte e la vergogna del femminile dall'altra. Solo attraverso alcune, flebili parole di resistenza, voce della vulnerabilità umana, Erika e Gerti, le due protagoniste dei romanzi presi in esame, tentano, senza riuscirci, di superare "la porta della vergogna". ; Moving from specific studies on the role of shame in Elfriede Jelinek's work and referring to feminist theories by Luce Irigaray and Hélène Cixous, my paper investigates the conceptual pair Scham/Schamlosigkeit (shame/shamelessness) in selected works by the Austrian writer and 2004 Nobel Prize for Literature Elfriede Jelinek. Two novels (Die Klavierspielerin and Lust) and two essays (Schamgrenzen? Die gewöhnliche Gewalt der weiblichen Hygiene and Schamlos: Die Zeit) will be examined to show that the private violence committed in some apparently perfect Austrian families from the middle-class - depicted in Jelinek's novels - is deeply rooted in shame and shamelessness. To Jelinek shame always has a political and gendered connotation and has terrific consequences on body and language. The relationships described in Jelinek's novels reveal sadomasochistic and typically patriarchal dynamics in which masculine disgust and feminine shame stand opposite. Through weak "resistance words" the vulnerability of Erika and Gerti, the two main female characters of both the novels involved in the study, arises, and they try in vain to find a way to overcome the "shame's door" and go beyond it.

This article provides an analysis of the relations and influences between a forgotten protagonist of transnational communism in the twentieth century, the Austrian Franz Marek, and the Italian Communist Party (PCI). By tracing these very relations, it is possible to understand the importance of transnational political and intellectual networks for the international communist movement. Focusing on the period ranging from 1945 to Marek's death in 1979, the article interprets the importance of Marek as a Marxist intellectual and political figure in Europe. From his prominent role in the Austrian Communist Party, to his engagement in theoretical discussions, Marek's life was that of a fervent Marxist. Whether as a political interlocutor or Marxist philosopher and theorist, in both cases the PCI was interested in the words of Franz Marek and fascinated by his theoretical thoughts. His studies of Gramsci were the proverbial cherry on the cake. Not only did he not become an outlaw when ousted from the Austrian Communist Party in 1970, the exchange continued to intensify, and he was involved to some extent in all theoretical discussions of the PCI, even though this posed a problem for many a brother party.

The foundation of Ca' Foscari was not consequent to the unification of Venice with the Kingdom of Italy, but the result of a long reflection initiated after 1847 by Daniele Manin. The original objective was to make Venice part of an Austrian economic and educational system, which integrated Lombardy, Veneto and the Austrian Littoral through trade, railways and navigation. Perspectives changed only with the unification of Venice with the Kingdom of Italy, in 1866, when the function of the port and the School of Commerce were no longer conceived in synergy, but in competition with the other ports of the Adriatic Sea

The finding at the National Library of Spain of an eighteenth-century engraving of the bridge over the river Milicia, along the coast to the east of Palermo, is a chance not only to shed light on the complex history of the design and construction of one of the main Sicilian bridges, but also to attribute the real paternity rather than to the famous architect Ferdinando Fuga to the lesser-known military engineer, serving the Austrian Crown, Michelangelo Blasco, whose long and successful career is reconstructed: from Sicily, through Milan, Wien and Lisbon, to the uncharted territory of Brazil.
