(HM)

"On a map, the Azores appear as nine tiny specks in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, but their location was to prove strategically vital in two world wars. The Atlantic became a crucial battleground twice within the space of 25 years, as the U.S. arsenal of democracy sent firstly stores, arms, and equipment, followed by many thousands of troops to fight in Europe. In both desperate and closely fought struggles at sea, Germany sought to stem the flow and thereby win the war, by cutting this vital lifeline, using a new weapon--the ocean-going submarine. The significance of the Azores has been overlooked in most military histories, but this extensively researched and copiously illustrated book from historian Guy Warner provides a detailed but balanced appraisal. The author has had access to archives and photographic collections in the UK, U.S., Portugal, and the Azores, consulting with local historians to produce a book that sheds much new light on a hitherto under-appreciated facet of twentieth-century history." --Amazon.com
This article focuses on the use of governmentality as a technique of government and its effects, with reference to a protected landscape. Drawing on ethnographic materials from the Azores, it demonstrates that governmentality is not always practised by governments in the way it is meant to be. Although the state's conservation efforts in Sete Cidades meet the accepted criteria of a governmental programme, they do not transform local subjectivities as intended. The protected landscape of Sete Cidades is a government initiative, but also a tool used strategically by certain social groups living and working within this landscape to object to the appropriation of the space upon which their livelihood relies, and to understand, communicate and legitimise their place in the world.

5th International Symposium on Shallow Lakes, Dalfsen, The Netherlands, 5-9 June, 2005. ; The Furnas Lake is located in the island of São Miguel, Azores. lt is a small lake (area, 1.92 km2;average depth, 6.9 m) with agricultura as the main activity in the catchment area (12.45 Km² ). Water temperaturas range from 10 °C to 24 °C. The water is turbid (Secchi disc depth is rarely > 1 m) and with a relatively high nutrient load (total N up to 2 mg.l ̄ ¹. total P up to 0.1 mg.l ̄ ¹ Turbid water and the frequent algae blooms caused by agricultura! runoff are considered a nuisance for tourism. The Regional Government has taken a series of measures of improve nutrient control, both upstream and in the water mass, but the problem has persisted. A two-year biomanipulation project started in March 2005 is aimed at reducing the cyprinid density (carp, Cyprinus carpio and roach, Rutilus rutilus) of the lake from 150 to about 20 kg.ha ̄ ¹ , and at monitoring the effects of this measure on water quality, macrophytes, zooplankton and the fish communities. The project work plan includes 1). the production of public information campaigns directed to ali lake users; 2). a survey of the initial state of the distribution and biomass of macrophytes, and species, size and biomass of zooplankton; 3). an intensiva removal of carp and roach during the reproductive season, employing gill and seine nets; and 4). to monitor the effects of biomanipulation on the water quality and biota.

BACKGROUND: The seaweed flora of Pico Island (central group of the Azores archipelago) has attracted interest of researchers on past occasions. Despite this, the macroalgal flora of the island cannot be considered well-known as published information reflects only occasional collections. To overcome this, a thorough investigation encompassing collections and presence data recording was undertaken. Research under the Campaigns "AÇORES/89", "PICO/91", "PICOBEL/2007" and "LAUMACAT/2011" covered a relatively large area (approximately 39 km2) around the island, encompassing the littoral and sublittoral levels down to about 40 m around the Island. This paper improves the knowledge of the Azorean macroalgal flora at local and regional scales by listing taxonomic records and providing information on the ecology and occurrence of each species present on the Island's littoral. NEW INFORMATION: A total of 4043 specimens (including taxa identified only to genus level) belonging to 303 taxa of macroalgae are registered, comprising 197 Rhodophyta, 53 Chlorophyta and 53 Ochrophyta (Phaeophyceae). From these, 225 were identified to species level (142 Rhodophyta, 41 Chlorophyta and 42 Ochrophyta), encompassing 110 new records for the island (69 Rhodophyta, 20 Chlorophyta and 21 Ochrophyta), three Macaronesian endemisms (Botryocladia macaronesica Afonso-Carillo, Sobrino, Tittley & Neto; Laurencia viridis Gil-Rodríguez & Haroun; Codium elisabethiae O. C. Schmidt), 14 introduced and 25 species with an uncertain status. ; This research was supported by the project "PICOBEL: Coastal benthic communities of Pico Island: characterization and monitoring", funded by the Azores Regional Government and lately by the project "ACORES-01-0145-FEDER-000072" funded the Operational Programme Azores 2020 (85% ERDF and 15% regional funds).
