First published in 1977 this volume challenges the accepted interpretations of Bentham's political thought and in particular the landmark criticism by John Stuart Mill and Elie Halevy.
Nearly a third of the 65-volume edition of The Collected Works of Jeremy Bentham has now been completed. How has it changed our understanding of Bentham's thought and his contribution to contemporary political theory?
Reviews the collaborative efforts grounded at University Coll London (England) over the past 30 years to produce the 65-volume edition of The Collected Works of Jeremy Bentham, highlighting the implications of this project for scholarship in modern political theory. Pointing out the influence of Bentham's writing on constitutional democracy, it is argued that the appearance of the new edition of Bentham's collected works will necessitate new assessments of classical utilitarianism & political theory. The importance of Bentham's work is placed in the context of the renewed interest in his place in the social & political thought of the Enlightenment. It is concluded that the new edition will have a substantial influence on studies of the Enlightenment & contemporary political & moral philosophical thought. 29 References. S. Barrera
