FONTES 46 (Ammanati), FONTES 48 (Cirni), and FONTES 49 (Martellini) have each treated the written testimonies that document a civic festival important for the emergence and evolution of the political iconography of the Medici principate, established in 1537, an event in which architecture and images played a central rôle. This event was the triumphal entry of Cosimo de' Medici and his family into Siena following the conclusion of the War of Siena, in 1559, and the subsequent annexation of Siena to Cosimo's territories, laying the basis for a Tuscan State. The entry itself took place on 28 October 1560, and it was the first stop on a journey undertaken by a large part of the ducal court which led the entourage to Rome, where the Duke and his company arrived on 6 November 1560 for an extended stay. The victory over Siena represented the first and the essential consolidation of Cosimo's territorial and dynastic ambitions, and the entry was intended to enforce the submission that followed victory and the conciliation that healed defeat, both accompanied by the celebration of a new power status enjoyed by the expanded Medici state and by the assertion of claims to a regal rank. It was the advancement of these aims that led the Duke, his family, and his court to continue on to the Rome of Pope Pius IV. If one attempts to discover and visualise the images of power that accompanied this event, it is to the extensive written sources that one must turn. The subject of FONTES 50 is the last of the known written documents that describe the entry into Siena. It is a somewhat summary description of the entry which focuses on its programmatic elements (inventions and inscriptions). It is found among the papers of Vincenzo Borghini in the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze (BNCF). Vincenzo Borghini (1515-1580) was the friend, confidant, and counselor of Giorgio Vasari, the luogotenente of the Accademia del Disegno, and an important artistic adviser to the Medici. Borghini's description belongs to a manuscript which ...

The article examines Casamassima's idea of the library as well as his analysis of the Italian libraries system. Casamassima considers the library a complex organism, with regards to its history and functions, which needs a conscious management and a careful development policy. The last one takes charge of the diffusion of current culture, and of the past culture preservation. The preservation aspect, instead of having a retrograde approach, should try to harmonize with the propositive and pedagogical aspects of the library itself. With regards to the Italian library System, Casamassima at first asked for increasing personnel and funds in order to give back credibility to the libraries; then he planned some structural reform to improve the National library of Florence (BNCF) and Italian libraries in general, with a closer collaboration between libraries and preservation institutes in order to train conscious and specialized personnel.

The collection of Aegean exhibits in the National Archaeological Museum of Florence is of the greatest significance in terms of its richness and variety. The richness is illustrated by the quantity and value of the objects conserved, and the variety by a provenance and chronology of the artefacts that embrace pre-classical Aegean history practically in its entirety. This complete edition is organised on the basis of four main areas of provenance and production of the materials (Crete, Continental Greece, the Cyclades and Rhodes). The formation of the Florentine Aegean collections dates largely to the early twentieth century, and was the felicitous result of a combination of different circumstances. The most important of these was the commitment of Luigi Adriano Milani, Director of the nascent Royal Museum, to whom we owe the initial stimulus for a museum collection that could assume exemplary importance and respond to educational requirements. ; The day that Desiderio Chilovi was appointed Director of the National Library of Florence all the services and operations of the Library had been reorganized. Even the organization of the library's archive had been changed through the identification of the main functions of the institute and via the creation of a new documentary series organized according to a classified system. This new classifying system recalls the characteristics of a classified catalogue whereby similar subjects are part of the same class and that gives evidence of a new way to conceive the organization of the knowledge and the exchange of information in light of what is emerging in that historical period: at the end of nineteenth century in Italy the classifications of Dewey and Cutter represent the new organizing model based on the accessibility of information and documents. These models proved to be helpful in the "culturalization" needed to complete the steps towards the country unification. A country that more than others due to political divisions from the past needed to know and understand what had been written and thought across the regions. The classification system thought by Desiderio Chilovi for the Archive of the National Library of Florence is really functional to the operations that the institute perform and at the same time represent a new way of thinking and conceive the library's management.
