Source Criticism of Data Platform Logics on the Internet
In: Historical social research: HSR-Retrospective (HSR-Retro) = Historische Sozialforschung, Band 45, Heft 3, S. 270-287
ISSN: 2366-6846
Source criticism is an epistemological practice in social and cultural studies that is crucial for specifying the range and scope of the findings, or in other words their validity and reliability. In the context of big data, source criticism is not yet established in the fashion as it is known in other areas of social and cultural research. Currently emerging discussions in historical research emphasize the relevance of source criticism of digital objects or data. In the context of these discussions, this contribution suggests exploring the potentials of source criticism for platform logics. We focus on big data sourced from the internet. Nevertheless our results aim to be transferrable to other sources of big data. The inclusion of source criticism into big data analysis may in turn foster the integration of data-driven analyses into social and cultural studies research approaches. For an integration of source criticism, the paper proposes source critical analyses of information systems, in particular internet platforms, in big data analysis with regard to a) types of big data platforms, b) researchers as data makers, and c) mixed realities of platform usage practices. In analogy to source repertoires (Quellentypen) it suggests to classify internet platforms as providers of particular types of big data sources depending on their infrastructural materiality and ontologies for tracing the key issues of (external) source criticism: provenance, authenticity, and integrity.

Die Versprechen von Big Data im Spiegel feministischer Rationalitätskritik
In: Gender: Zeitschrift für Geschlecht, Kultur und Gesellschaft, Band 11, Heft 3, S. 11-25
ISSN: 2196-4467

Big Data Development in China
In: East Asian Policy, Band 10, Heft 4, S. 91-102
ISSN: 2251-3175
Since 2012, the Chinese government has released several national-level plans to develop the big data industry, with an aim to improve governance and to push Chinese manufacturing up the value chain. Over the years, the Chinese big data industry has experienced rapid but uneven growth. Although more Chinese companies and government departments are adopting big data technologies, administrative fragmentation and privacy protection policies remain obstacles to further development.

Big Data in Public Affairs
In: Public administration review: PAR, Band 76, Heft 6, S. 928-937
ISSN: 1540-6210
AbstractThis article offers an overview of the conceptual, substantive, and practical issues surrounding "big data" to provide one perspective on how the field of public affairs can successfully cope with the big data revolution. Big data in public affairs refers to a combination of administrative data collected through traditional means and large‐scale data sets created by sensors, computer networks, or individuals as they use the Internet. In public affairs, new opportunities for real‐time insights into behavioral patterns are emerging but are bound by safeguards limiting government reach through the restriction of the collection and analysis of these data. To address both the opportunities and challenges of this emerging phenomenon, the authors first review the evolving canon of big data articles across related fields. Second, they derive a working definition of big data in public affairs. Third, they review the methodological and analytic challenges of using big data in public affairs scholarship and practice. The article concludes with implications for public affairs.
