In the context of its current popularity Bionics is often depicted as a promising approach to design more efficient and sustainable technologies by just copying nature's solutions. In the present article I am investigating the epistemology of Bionics in regard to its historical roots in Cybernetics and the military-industrial academic complex of the 1960s. The paper argues that the early actors of Bionics were well aware of their discipline's epistemic constraints and the antagonism between mimesis and abstraction. In fact, as a close look at the research practice at Heinz von Foerster's Biological Computer Laboratory reveals, the imitation of nature often involved a great deal of tinkering, a little bit of patching up and sometimes even a hint of trickery.

"Transhuman, or trans-human, is the concept of an intermediary form between human and posthuman. In other words, a transhuman is a being that resembles a human in most respects but who has powers and abilities beyond those of standard humans. These abilities might include improved intelligence, awareness, strength, or durability. Transhumans sometimes appear in science-fiction as cyborgs or genetically-enhanced humans. This book will look into the question "Can machines think?" followed by "Can humans extend their lifespan and keep up with machines?" In other words, do we (humans) have to modify ourselves to be bionic humans, to co-exist and make the most of machines in future?"--
Through philosophy and communication science, this article explores the complicated relations between the exposure of prosthetic-bodies and the normative framework of our societies. Using the empowerment as key-concept, we will define these bodies as boundaries bodies, which represent a delicate balance between political emancipation and perpetuation of an ableist vision of the body based on control, performance and techno-fantasy. Our exploratory field research focuses on the exposure - the iconographic and discursive production - of two bionic women: Viktoria Modesta, bionic artist, and Tilly Lockey, Open Bionics' teenage icon.

- Abstraktion biologischer Befunde: Herausarbeiten allgemeiner Prinzipien. - Umsetzung in die Technik: Prinzipvergleich, Konzeptuelles, Vorgehensweise.
