In May 2017, Robert Mueller was tapped to lead an inquiry into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, coordination by foreign agents with Donald Trump's campaign, and obstruction of justice by the president. Verlagsinfo: "On May 30th 1967, Sir Louis Mbanefo brought a new country into the world. Mbanefo was a widely respected judge, known to the Nigerian public as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. To his peers in the judiciary he was a formidable moralist - a "black Englishman" who "did not mix well at parties" as one would recall.2 A Cambridge education, a successful law practice, a knighthood, and a term on the International Court of Justice were all behind him.3 Ahead of him was an uncertain future. A photo taken that day shows Mbanefo, weighed down under his robes and wig, taking an oath from a man thirty years his junior, clad in military fatigues and an unruly beard. The country established that day through a series of decrees and legal rituals was the Republic of Biafra, and the soldier being sworn in to lead it was Lieutenant Colonel Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu. The Republic of Biafra broke away from Nigeria in the name of making law and order. It promised to be a new model for Africa, and to "fulfill the decolonising mission which the 'still-born' Nigeria failed to do," as the first issue of its state newspaper announced.4 Biafra's government would be moderate and modern, guided by humanism and the gospel of prosperity. But in the war of secession that followed, it came to look very different from the country its founders envisioned. As Chief Justice of the Biafran Court of Appeal, Mbanefo had a prime position to watch things fall apart. Presiding over cases in the dwindling territory that the Biafran Army controlled, he heard accounts of violence that surpassed what he thought people were capable of. Mbanefo came to believe that everyone was lying to him, even his fellow judges. He presided over the expansion of martial law, which went against all his moral instincts, and he came to fear privately that the new country he had thrown in his lot with was actually a "bandit state.""--

A collection of international case studies that demonstrate the importance of ideas to urban political developmentIdeas, interests, and institutions are the "holy trinity" of the study of politics. Of the three, ideas are arguably the hardest with which to grapple and, despite a generally broad agreement concerning their fundamental importance, the most often neglected. Nowhere is this more evident than in the study of urban politics and urban political development.The essays in How Ideas Shape Urban Political Development argue that ideas have been the real drivers behind urban political development and offer as evidence national and international examples—some unique to specific cities, regions, and countries, and some of global impact. Within the United States, contributors examine the idea of "blight" and how it became a powerful metaphor in city planning; the identification of racially-defined spaces, especially black cities and city neighborhoods, as specific targets of neoliberal disciplinary practices; the paradox of members of Congress who were active supporters of civil rights legislation in the 1950s and 1960s but enjoyed the support of big-city political machines that were hardly liberal when it came to questions of race in their home districts; and the intersection of national education policy, local school politics, and the politics of immigration. "William Gregory, "Greg" to all, was born into a sharecropper's life in the hills of north central Tennessee. From the back of a mule-drawn plow, Greg learned the value of resilience and the importance of living a determined life. Refusing to accept a life of continued poverty, Greg sought and found a way out--a work-study college program that made it possible to leave farming behind him forever.While at college, Greg completed the Civilian Pilot Training Program and was subsequently accepted into the Army's pilot training program. Earning his wings in 1942, Greg became a P-38 combat pilot and served in North Africa during the summer of 1943--a critical time when the Luftwaffe was still a potent threat, and America had begun the march northward from the Mediterranean into Europe proper.Following the war, Greg served with a B-29 unit, then transitioned to the new, red-hot B-47 strategic bomber. In his frequent deployments, he was always assigned the same target in the Soviet Union--Tblisi, Stalin's home town. While a B-47 pilot, Greg was selected to join America's first high-altitude program--the Black Knights. Flying RB-57D aircraft, Greg and his team flew peripheral "ferret" missions around the Soviet Union and its satellites, collecting critical order-of-battle data so desperately needed by the Air Force at that time. When that program neared its design end, and following the Gary Powers shoot-down over the Soviet Union, Greg was assigned to command of the CIA's U-2 unit at Edwards AFB. It was during that five-year command that Greg and his team provided critical overflight intelligence, including during the Bay of Pigs, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Vietnam build-up. He found time to also become one of the first to fly U-2s off aircraft carriers in a demonstration project.Following his U-2 command, Greg attended the National War College, was assigned to the reconnaissance office at the Pentagon, and then was named Vice-Commandant of the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT). Greg retired from the Air Force in 1972."
