; In this essay, I unpack the politics intertwined with two bodily practices observed by many Rastafarian men in Jamaica: the sporting of dreadlocks and beards. I begin with the political history of the dreadlocks and beards in Jamaica, showing how they became connected to notions of Africanism and the social life of biblical texts in the Rastafarian Movement. I argue that these techniques of caring for the body translate Rastafarian anti-colonial politics that challenge and criticize colonial and postcolonial aesthetics and modes of existence on the Caribbean island, which gives rise to reflections on belonging, sovereignty, and diasporic Africanity.
; This qualitative research study, which involved interviews with black women victims of domestic violence, was aimed at verifying if there were any inscriptions of the ideal of whiteness introjected in their subjectivities and at evaluating the contexts in which racism and domestic violence appear in their lives. The importance of this type of study is in highlighting the existence of the myth of racial democracy in Brazil, in its perverse face, by showing how the ego ideal of whiteness is propagated unconsciously through ideology as a way of subjugating the black racial-ethnic group to the dominant one. The study emphasizes the high rate of domestic violence against black women and the urgency of public policies for the prevention of these crimes and the protection of the victims.
Abstract This paper seeks to discuss the relationship between the legal framework for education and the black population in Brazil, seen through the prism of history of education. It analyzes how this segment of the population has been depicted in laws and imperial ordinances related to instruction, while highlighting the changes and continuities regarding permissions and prohibitions in the access to school enrollment and attendance. Whole sets of laws and regulations were perused regarding primary and secondary education of nine provinces and seven others indirectly, in search of terms that make reference to the legal or racial condition of welcome or unwelcome students. When monitoring the changes in the use of terms throughout the nineteenth century – slaves, non-free, freedmen, blacks, descendants of free Africans, ingênuos – in different provinces, we encounter prohibitions and permissions for the enrollment and/or attendance of blacks between 1835 (when prohibition against enrollment of non-free people was first mentioned) and 1887 (when the last prohibition of slave enrollment occurred). We use Thompson's perspective in regarding the law as a result of disputes and customs in order to offer explanations about the relation between the black population and education when Brazil was an empire. We conclude that the relationship between legal order and education sheds light on the history of education with respect to the presence/absence of blacks in public schools during the Empire.
; This article analyses the possible discursive developments around the female body in movies, using Chocolat (Claire Denis, 1998) and Black Venus (Abdellatif Kechiche, 2010); bearing in mind this body as an object of desire, a space of resistance, a cultural and ethnical frontier, or even as a vestige of history and memory. Through theoretical, esthetical and political articulations about these images, and through the analysis of these films, we will attempt to understand how intercultural cinema – which is able to create new images from the memory of the senses, since it possesses tactile and contagious qualities, with which the spectator is confronted as if he was connecting with another body (Marks, 2000) – becomes an instrument of representation of a possible cultural history and memory, precisely by means of the role that bodies – removed from their original environment – play in the construction of this cultural history and memory.

In this book, the author presents the Black Brazilian Movement as a political actor, educator, producer of emancipatory knowledge and systematizer of the same one about the racial question in Brazil. Such knowledge, when transformed into claim, became important State policies in the twenty-first century. It is, therefore, a social movement of great importance for the unveiling of questions such as racial discrimination, gender, youth, affirmative actions, africanities, education of ethnic-racial relations, among many others. Nilma Gomes emphasizes the epistemological richness of this movement in the perspective of education, privileging as a theoretical support the contributions of Boaventura de Sousa in the re-signification of concepts as pedagogies of absences and of the emergencies.
This article presents a critical overview of theories and practices that aim to enhance black women's health focusing on the concept of resilience. Beyond the academic literature, mostly from Pyschology, this text mobilizes different sources about racial relations, including the social movement production. Black women are exposed to human rights deprivation, to the inefficency of governmental programs that should guarantee the right to education and to comprehensive health care, among others. They are also frequently exposed to racism and sexism that affect their health. The concept of "resilience as a process" adopted in this article, a result of both the critical reflection on the literature and of research data, supports the adoption of a psychosocial approach resulting from vulnerabilities analysis integrated to a human rights based framework. The conclusion calls for initiatives that include the practical knowledge of black women and for valuing their collective and transgenerational experiences that has supported the overcome of their exposure to extreme vulnerable contexts, experiences that enhanced their processes of resilience. In this perspective, there is a need to consider not only black women's assistance and individual care but also their different experiences of belongingness, their trajectories, their networks, communities and territories.
This article aims to investigate the intersections of gender/race in the socio-spatial trajectories of black filmmakers, with a view to understanding the strategies they use to face racism and sexism, in their filmmaking and in their leisure experiences. The research is based on the contributions of decolonial thought, intersectional black feminism, critical studies of leisure and cinema. The methodology of this qualitative research included a bibliographic study and in-depth interviews with seven black filmmakers, which were analyzed using the Discourse of the Collective Subject-DSC technique. The main strategies that have the power of meaning to face racism and sexism in filmmaking and in the leisure experiences of the interviewees are the narratives of themselves, participation in associations of black collectives and film festivals with a black theme and the experience of a "differentiated leisure", which can be critically enjoyed, even if it is necessary to advance towards subverting the social, cultural and political reality established in our context. In conclusion, the socio-spatial trajectories of black filmmakers unveil inequalities aiming to break with the stereotyped social imaginary, reaffirming the relevance of an "unsubmissive leisure".
This article demonstrates the existence of black families and the presence of children from these families in public schools of Maranhão, in the nineteenth century. Based on a conjectural methodology newspapers ads of the nineteenth century were consulted and also codices relating to records of baptism, marriage, and documentation of the Government Secretary, located in the Public Archives of the State of Maranhão and Public Library Benedito Leite.
This text presents a reading about the presence of women in theEscola Normal de Caetité, Bahia, Brazil (1898-1943) in an effort to break with narratives, in school legislation and curricula, which describe them as submissive teachers, executing tasks prescribed by men. When resuming documents from the Municipal Public Archive, from theEscola Normal de Caetitéand from retired teachers in a historical-discursive path located in gender studies, which involved reading copies of theJornal A Pennaand of photographs, the text problematizes policies of silencing in two temporalities, that of the documents of the period 1898-1943 and that of the archives that organize the narratives of the Normal School in the present time, to bring out experiences of protagonism of women in the teaching profession. This period marks the beginning of teacher training in Caetité and extends till the end of the activities ofJornal A Penna, one of the sources of this study. The educational scenes that the documents in the archives reveal allow us to affirm that the Escola Normal emerged sexist, classist and racist as a symptom of a State constituted in these same nuances. To exist as a woman and as a black woman meant resisting different oppressions. It concludes by arguing that the creative ways of the women of theEscola Normal de Caetitécontributed to resist the silencing policies of the Upper Sertão region of Bahia from the second half of the 20th century and should appear in the local archives as a condition of possibility for textual productions sustaining forms of protagonism marked by gendered and racialized experiences.
Evidence suggests that the question of migrations nowadays has become a major challenge of political, social and imaginary life of the "Tout-Monde". For this reason there is an undeniable heightening of the intraAfrican, transAfrican and transcontinental migrations. In addition to South-South migrations, migrations to Europe continue to attract more media attention. If mass migration is widespread in the world, it arouses painful memories in the particular case of the post-colonial Black African migrant. The general objective that is intended here is to put in tension, through the two novels El metro and Nativas, respectively by Donato Ndongo-Bidyogo and Inongo Vi Makomè, the myth of the "great story" of the supposedly vigorous sexual prowess of the Black. Another major task of this article is to contribute modestly to the work of demystifying the (sexual) figure of the Black African migrant in Europe/Occident. The choice of these two novels has double importance here. The first one is that they belong to the category of novels called migration novels (which are fully inscribed nowadays in what one can call the "littérature-monde". Secondly, they are novels that bring to light a large part of the problem of migrations, of "migrances" in general and, particularly, the problem of the advent of the postcolonial Black African migrant. The study has largely been based on the theoretical formulations of Victorien Lavou Zoungbo through is book Outsidering… (2007), in which he deals extensively with the question of the "great story of the sexual vigor-prowess of Black". His theoretical formulations in which he proposes a dynamic and operative articulation of the history of Blacks in the Americas seem to fit well with the question of the "presence-history" of Black African migrants in Europe. Sete mulheres participaram do estudo. ; The belief in racial democracy in Brazil has been deconstructed by various indices of social inequality and violence victimization. This situation raises the question of how this portion of the population is served in the mental health system, specifically in the psychological clinical service to the black client. The objective of this study was to collect narratives of black persons who had white psychotherapists, regarding their experiences of racism in daily life, as well as to how they were listened to in a biracial dyad in psychotherapy. Seven women took part in the study. Four thematic categories were identified: (1) Reason to seek psychotherapy; (2) Psychotherapeutic process; (3) Associated therapeutic factors, and, (4) Psychotherapist specific training to serve black people. The most important issues, presented by all the interviewees, were the interracial transference in the therapeutic process and the lack of training of the psychotherapist to serve black clients.
