Bitcoin is the first digital medium to allow global, "purely peer-to-peer" exchange. At the height of the Great Recession, Bitcoin's pseudonymous creator introduced the electronic cash to sidestep political and economic institutions. Today, it is praised as an opportunity for the unbanked, a liberating force, and a pioneering technology. It is also infamously associated with volatility, illicit activities, and profligate energy consumption. Bitcoin has also flown under the radar of political science, whereas computer scientists, economists, and legal scholars have written extensively about it. To address the gap in the literature, I describe Bitcoin as an actor in global affairs, explain how Bitcoin and blockchain technology work, and discuss why Bitcoin is relevant to political science as the archetypal case of blockchain technology. I argue that Bitcoin is a form of contentious politics uniquely suited to the twenty-first century. Examining Bitcoin as a form of contentious politics sheds light on how a purportedly borderless technology has actually fared in subverting state authority: not entirely well. Nonetheless, Bitcoin has succeeded in at least two respects: it is an unprecedented form of untraceable electronic cash that coordinates unrivaled levels of computing resources from voluntary contributors and it has become a resilient, global social movement. As an archetype of blockchain technology, Bitcoin inspires research of blockchain's capacity to facilitate collective action, uses in international cooperation and competition, and prospects for human development. The thesis concludes with a set of implications for blockchain research and policy.
Facebook has proposed to integrate the cryptocurrency 'Libra' into its services, a plan which has been heavily discussed in science, business and politics. On Steemit.com one receives a tradable-token namend Steem in return for writing popular articles or post comments while at Wildspark.me one is rewarded for discovering the next big YouTube video. This shows that Blockchain technologies have an undeniable influence on the development of today's Social Media Networks. On the one hand, we have the technology hype around Blockchain and what kind of new applications are made possible, and on the other hand, the speculation hype around digital tokens (cryptocurrencies) and new forms of investment (ICO, STO), which have in turn resulted in a large number of start-ups in the Social Media and Blockchain sector. Start-ups and products, which quite often disappear from the market in a relatively short time. This paper provides a Snapshot, how Blockchain technologies could influence established Social Networks and gives an overview of known start-ups and their platforms which facilitate Blockchain technologies (like Steemit, Social X, Obsidian, Indorse, Sola, HyperSpace, Ardor.rocks a.s.o.). Finally, a discussion on how Blockchain technologies can be used beyond speculation is provided. ; peer-reviewed

Blockchain is a distributed database which is cryptographically protected against malicious modifications. While promising for a wide range of applications, current blockchain platforms rely on digital signatures, which are vulnerable to attacks by means of quantum computers. The same, albeit to a lesser extent, applies to cryptographic hash functions that are used in preparing new blocks, so parties with access to quantum computation would have unfair advantage in procuring mining rewards. Here we propose a possible solution to the quantum era blockchain challenge and report an experimental realization of a quantum-safe blockchain platform that utilizes quantum key distribution across an urban fiber network for information-theoretically secure authentication. These results address important questions about realizability and scalability of quantum-safe blockchains for commercial and governmental applications.
Purpose: A burgeoning body of research has described how the blockchain technology may affect the way firms operate within the recording industry which has undergone profound changes due to the dematerialisation of music and the emergence of now consumption habits. The purpose of the paper is to explore both the challenges and the opportunities related to the application of smart contracts and blockchain mechanisms to the recording industry. Approach/Methodology/Design: Based on a review of contributions made to the literature in various fields, we discuss recent developments, relying on several examples and use cases which bring an updated perspective to a topical question. While the blockchain brings interesting solutions in favour of an improved management of copyright data and fees collection, several barriers impede their uptake and large-scale adoption. Findings: We argue that the absence of both technological and regulatory standards, the resistance to change, and the necessary use of cryptocurrency, are all obstacles to a profound transformation of the sector. Practical Implications: To overcome these limitations, we suggest three recommendations that deal with technological standards, cooperative agreements, and international regulation around blockchain. Originality/Value: So far, the literature tends to focus either on blockchain technology or on smart contracts when discussing technological evolution within the recording industry. In this paper, we bring together these two elements which are definitely complementory to each other. Further research efforts are required to investigate in more details the feasibility and relevance of the recommendations we make. ; peer-reviewed
Managing the profusion of health data from either caregivers, patients and any other stakeholder institution in the health system leads to the creation of numerous databases which are rarely effectively coordinated with one another. In addition, the same information can be recorded several times by different parties, which is a source of many errors. In addition, such large databases are vulnerable to hacking and are subject to strict legal rules for controlling data confidentiality. The dramatic experience of the global Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the great difficulty of effectively monitoring patients with existing information systems. Given this observation, it appears that the creation of a decentralized health blockchain with limited access is a solution to rationalize the management of health data while preserving the essential rules of confidentiality, scalability and traceability.

M.SC.BLOCKCHAIN&DIST.LEDGER TECH. ; Distributed Ledger Technology has generated plenty of excitement for the potential it has to enrich our lives. But it has also brought legal uncertainty as it fits either uneasily with established law or does not fit at all. Even worse is the use of terminology which brings confusion to the debate. One such artefact of DLT is the smart contract, and perhaps nothing else in the field has muddied the waters as much as this term. A 'smart contract' is really a software program that runs on a DLT. But its very designation confuses it with the more traditional legal contract. In consequence, perhaps the most common question that perplexes practitioners today is whether smart contracts can qualify as a valid contract in terms of the Maltese Civil Code. Analysis of the matter indicates that if a smart contract does meet the essential elements prescribed by law, then it can be deemed to qualify as a valid contract in terms of the Maltese Civil Code. However, legislative intervention may be necessary. At the end of the day, the words 'code is law' refer more to the way that software executes than a statement of fact about the legal nature of the smart contract. ; N/A

Block chain technology provides reliable electronic voting system that can be secured by adding more decision so that the possible attacks can be avoided. Block chain technology based on crypto currency implements diffused database architecture with transaction records secured by transactions.
This is the peer reviewed version of the following article: Kabbinale, AR, Dimogerontakis, E, Selimi, M, et al. Blockchain for economically sustainable wireless mesh networks. Concurrency Computat Pract Exper. 2020; 32:e5349, which has been published in final form at https://doi.org/10.1002/cpe.5349. This article may be used for non-commercial purposes in accordance with Wiley Terms and Conditions for Self-Archiving. ; Decentralization, in the form of mesh networking and blockchain, two promising technologies, is coming to the telecommunications industry. Mesh networking allows wider low-cost Internet access with infrastructures built from routers contributed by diverse owners, whereas blockchain enables transparency and accountability for investments, revenue, or other forms of economic compensations from sharing of network traffic, content, and services. Crowdsourcing network coverage, combined with crowdfunding costs, can create economically sustainable yet decentralized Internet access. This means that every participant can invest in resources and pay or be paid for usage to recover the costs of network devices and maintenance. While mesh networks and mesh routing protocols enable self-organized networks that expand organically, cryptocurrencies and smart contracts enable the economic coordination among network providers and consumers. We explore and evaluate two existing blockchain software stacks, Hyperledger Fabric (HLF) and Ethereum geth with Proof of Authority (PoA) intended as a local lightweight distributed ledger, deployed in a real city-wide production mesh network and in laboratory network. We quantify the performance and bottlenecks and identify the current limitations and opportunities for improvement to serve locally the needs of wireless mesh networks, without the privacy and economic cost of relying on public blockchains. ; This paper has been supported by the AmmbrTech Group, the Spanish Government TIN2016‐77836‐C2‐2‐R and the European Community H2020 Programme netCommons (H2020‐688768). This paper proposes an architecture for biometric electronic identification document (e-ID) system based on Blockchain for citizens identity verification in transactions corresponding to the notary, registration, tax declaration and payment, basic health services and registration of economic activities, among others. To validate the user authentication, a biometric e-ID system is used to avoid spoofing and related attacks. Also, to validate the document a digital certificate is used with the corresponding public and private key for each citizen by using a user&rsquo ; s PIN. The proposed transaction validation process was implemented on a Blockchain system in order to record and verify the transactions made by all citizens registered in the electoral census, which guarantees security, integrity, scalability, traceability, and no-ambiguity. Additionally, a Blockchain network architecture is presented in a distributed and decentralized way including all the nodes of the network, database and government entities such as national register and notary offices. The results of the application of a new consensus algorithm to our Blockchain network are also presented showing mining time, memory and CPU usage when the number of transactions scales up.
Blockchain represents the backbone of cryptocurrencies, their underlying technology. It can be seen as a large database shared by a peer-to-peer network of users, which collectively validates the information that is recorded on it. Not residing on a single central server, it overcomes a centralised logic, the one used by the best-known web applications like Amazon, Google or Facebook. Instead, DApps (DApp being the acronym of Decentralised Application) are distributed, decentralised applications specifically designed to run on blockchain systems. Blockchain does not involve intermediaries or trusted third parties and its main feature lies in its ability to increase transparency and traceability in transactions. A recent resolution of the European Parliament called for measures to increase the adoption of public and private blockchains, particularly in supply chain management, stating that they can have an indirect effect both at a social and economic level. Several studies have already analysed the potential of blockchain in the agri-food sector, but also in the production and distribution chain of luxury goods or other consumer goods. The existing literature focuses mainly on the role of blockchain in improving the processes related to safety and efficiency of the supply chain, yet it does not seem to problematize the concept of transparency. Despite this, the relationship between transparency and trust, which is generally confirmed by literature, is far from linear. Following an introduction of the technical characteristics of blockchain technology and its possible implementation, we address the way in which blockchain affects the issues of disintermediation, such as in the public sector, where the role of blockchain is still being defined. We also focus on the way blockchain shifts the centre of gravity of trust from an institutional, central entity, either towards the periphery or towards a technological system. Comparing the constructs of trust and transparency, we question the a priori desirability of transparency. In fact, the relationship between trust and transparency becomes rather complex in organizational communication processes. A spotlight is also placed on the aspects that affect the relationship between an organization implementing the blockchain and its relevant stakeholders, along with their different needs. We argue that blockchain still leaves a need for a relationship of trust, as much as the achievement of a trust-free model is pursued. Finally, we mention some of the major critical issues of blockchain, which are still to be resolved.
