Inside the Liberal Boot: The Criminological Enterprise in Canada
In: Studies in political economy: SPE ; a socialist review, Band 13, S. 145-164
ISSN: 0707-8552
A critical overview of developments in the criminological enterprise in Canada. Three historical periods are identified: correctionalist-rehabilitative; liberal-progressive; & critical-radical. Five major modes of liberal progressivism in Canadian criminology are explicated: systems-analysis; enlightened positivism; societal reaction; social conflict; & legal reformism. These forms of liberal-progressivism are shown to exercise a hegemonic grip on criminological theory & practice in Canada, although there is a slowly emerging "critical" criminology that is compatible with indigenous Canadian political economy traditions. This new criminology, however, will probably not be able to draw on much institutional support & will have to develop outside the standard professional locations. AA.
