Fluid Identities in Central European Borderlands
In: European history quarterly, Band 31, Heft 4, S. 519-548
ISSN: 0014-3111, 0265-6914
This article examines transitional identities in pre-1945 Central European borderlands on both an individual & a collective level. These territories traditionally contained a zone of ethnic contact & passage. Numerous nerve lines linked different cultural groups, & ethnicity often became a matter of personal choice. The renewed strength of ethnicity & nationalism in Eastern Europe during the late twentieth century has rekindled interpretations that focus on the persistence & resiliency of these social sentiments. By drawing attention to malleability & fluidity, the examination of transitional populations balances this view. 6 Tables. [Copyright 2001 Sage Publications Ltd.]
