The Mozambique-Zimbabwe border is one of longest boundaries in Southern Africa. Running for about 1,231 km, it divides eastern Zimbabwe and central Mozambique. At the same time, it is one of the least researched borders in Southern Africa. While some research has been carried out along this border focusing on refugees (Hughes 1999), on labour and migration (Tornimbeni 2005, Newitt & Tornimbeni 2008), on agriculture and environmental conservation (Tornimbeni 2007, Hughes 2009), and on land politics and traditional authorities (Tornimbeni 2010, Florêncio 2005), very little is known about how the borderland communities perceive and relate to the boundary.

This paper builds on previous geographical and social science work at the boundaries of climate change by (re)asserting the significance of the territoriality of the national state in global climate negotiations. Using the post-political consensus as a theoretical framework and drawing upon examples from climate change negotiations like Kyoto and Copenhagen, it argues that it is too premature to fetishize the consensus of, and collectivism between, national states in global climate politics. As geographers, 'territoriality', both as a material and discursive device, is fundamental in, and constitutive of, how we interpret and understand climate change and the politics thereof.

Inspired by the Deleuzian imperative to think with, rather than of, cinema, this article considers Mediterranean musics less in terms of historical and cultural testimony and more as an ongoing composition of a mobile critical syntax. The southern and subaltern sounds that are heard and registered permit travel in the musical archive and there configure a critical cartography that continually exceeds and interrogates habitual understandings imposed by national boundaries and limited linguistic communities. Ultimately these sounds come to chart the limits of a modernity, and its framing of the Mediterranean, that turns out not to be merely ours to control and define.

Quantitative societal culture research (QSCR) in organization studies crystallizes a configuration of social science perspectives and methods that became prominent in the 1970s. We consider the qualities of and boundaries around cultural groups that this tradition emphasizes, and other characteristics of cultural groups that it does not emphasize. Current debates surrounding this tradition reflect both recent social science innovations and rediscoveries of early social science perspectives. Our analysis of quantitative cross-cultural societal research in organization studies considers this process of crystallization, innovation and rediscovery. We suggest ways to address current controversies and promote conversations with other research approaches.

Relative cross-border retail prices, in a common currency, comove closely with the nominal exchange rate. Using product-level prices and wholesale costs from a grocery chain operating in the United States and Canada, we decompose this variation into relative costs and markup components. The high correlation of nominal and real exchange rates is driven mainly by changes in relative costs. National borders segment markets. Retail prices respond to changes in costs in neighboring stores within the same country but not across the border. Prices have a median discontinuous change of 24 percent at the border and 0 percent at state boundaries. (JEL F31, L11, L81)

Abstract
With this issue, Chinese Semiotic Studies introduces a section on the Tartu Semiotics School. This regular feature, appearing potentially in every issue, is justified by several arguments: this school has been persisting on the semiotic scene already since the 1960s; this is the school that founded the semiotics of culture and actively studied it ever since; the Tartu school has the potential to bridge the different approaches of semiotics-structuralist and dynamic, Western and Eastern, cultural and biological; and, as it is situated on many boundaries, the Tartu Semiotics School may be used as a source for creative ideas or new approaches.

This article will examine the ethical and directorial challenges faced by the documentary filmmaker when collaborating with a central subject who lives with a potentially fatal genetic condition, whilst pursuing a career as a professional dominatrix. What modes of representation and collaboration are open to the director, when artificial boundaries and television genre categorisations such as 'the science documentary', 'the biography' and the fetish or 'porno film' seem limiting? Jabe Babe – A Heightened Life ( Merewether 2005 ) seeks to collapse and merge these conventionally distinct practices by developing a hybrid mode of representation, provoking questions about society's desire for sexual, visual, and genetic conformity.

This paper revisits Lai Châu in late 1953 when the Thái Federation's collapse signaled the rise of a hegemonic Democratic Republic of Vietnam. I use this moment to analyze processes of legitimating and remaking forms of rule and ruling. I illustrate both how a militarized political project configured and articulated itself, as state, and how this self-proclaimed "state" attempted to recruit local people by casting them in a new community, as nation. Making nation and state together produced enduring, and contested, spatial and communal boundaries structuring relations of rule in an emergent "Northwest" region and knowledge of its peoples.

This paper challenges the drawing of explicit boundaries between discourse and practice. Reflecting on the intricacies of practice and meaning, it begins by recounting the 'story' of the national evaluation of the Well Being Power and the myriad of ways in which local practitioners interpreted its use. It then draws on political discourse theory to set out the relationship between discourse and practice before drawing on what Glynos and Howarth (2007) have termed 'logics of critical explanation' to present a novel set of strategies for evaluating policy practices as well as conceptualising our own practice as policy analysts and researchers.

AbstractThis research focuses on the absorbing society, and examines a process by which immigrants entered and changed the cultural core of the absorbing society. It analyzes the development of an ethnic holiday, the traditional ethnic Mimouna holiday of North African immigrants in Israel, into a national holiday and into part of the dominant culture. The research concludes that this process evolved mainly as a result of the political activism of immigrants from North Africa and a weakening of the hegemony. It may also illuminate the sometimes crucial role of immigrants in moving the boundaries between the center and the periphery.

This article proposes developing the public bioethics aspect of stewardship and applying it to the EU as 'supra-stewardship', a tool for opening a discursive space for citizen participation in EU preparedness planning. With this in mind the article highlights some of the contours for engagement on the boundaries of responsibility and the production of governance distortions and failures brought out by attention to framing, distribution, vulnerability and learning. This should help citizens to tackle the complementary expert and public rationalities that undermine their involvement, contribute supplementary knowledge towards governance, and help promote institutional learning by the EU and resilience.

In determining the boundaries of supranational legislation some courts adopt an expansionist (dynamic) line. To take a well-known regional example, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) has long been engaged in an exercise in expansionist interpretation, thus broadening the scope of European Union legislation at the expense of the political discretion of EU Member States. Though surely seeking to advance what it sees as the Union's best interests, the ECJ sometimes "runs amok," actively extending regional rules in ways that constrain national sovereignty beyond what the Members had originally intended. Or, as one of my Copenhagen colleagues once put it: the ECJ is "running wild."
