R. Bastide played a most important role in the cultural lifeof Brazil, particularly within the young University of Sao Paulo, but also in the larger sphere of the national intelligentsia. Very soon after arriving in 1938 he became one of the most dynamic elements of the intellectual circles, both as art and literary critic and as sociologist. Rapidly persuaded that unless he modified totally the logical categories inherent in his European mentality he would be unable to understand the Brazilian civilization which fascinated him, he was led first to study the works of the early Brazilian researchers and later to observe personnally the Afro-Brazilian cults, and these investigations provided him with the key to this strange and complex world. Finally the ritual of initiation to the candomblé in which he was allowed to participate attained its real significance in his life, that of a new birth which allowed him to become totally integrated in the Brazilian way of life, for the greater benefit of the researchers and students of the country.

Abstract controversies about the impact of Pentecostal beliefs among the popular classes of Brazil. It surveys the issues tackled in the academic debate over Pentecostalism and introduces new elements to support the idea that Pentecostalism is now part of a dynamic Brazilian culture undergoing major transformations. Its political repercussions are analyzed in relation to the centers of urban violence and the forms of social aggregation that are appearing among the disadvantaged.
The evolution of terrorism along the last 30 years has provoked the reaction from the international community just as from the nations. An extremely severe criminal law, named enemy criminal law, is being developed. The Franco Brazilian comparative study of terrorism definitions, sanctions and applicable procedures reveals the presence and the limits imposed to this law by the principles of proportionality and legality, principles that became the common denominator of all legislations in criminal matters. In this way, the concepts of dangerousness and preventive measures take a new importance, in both substantial and procedural law. If this law is being developed so fast lately, it is due to the fact that the terrorist attempts are, in several countries, in greater number and more destructive.

; This paper is a contribution to the analysis of the phenomenon of the « disappearance » of the tropical forests. This global problem is approached from the point of view of Brazilian Amazonia,an area of about hait a billion hectares, reducing the extent of the problem to more manageable proportions, with the emphasis on the dearth of currently marketable species in this forest, and the poorness and instability of its soils. It is concluded that as almost everywhere else, the problem is not so much technical as agricultural, social or political.

With the emergence of what is called 4.0 Revolution, with the technology advance, in the actual social, economic and ideological contexts all marked by relations and communications mediated by technology, there is no way for the Public Administration's future then using the same technology. The Administration must get adapted to the technological reality in order to rescue the democratic participation of the collectivity especially from new generations.Technology can contribute to the dialogue between Government and the collectivity, in order to enhance democratic participation, from distinct people, moving away from merely formal democracy centered on the famous binary "yes" or "no".In view of a dialogical and democratic Public Administration, more opened to the citizens and to their participation, the use of technology, as a form of open and dialogical government it is one way to achieve good public governance with expansion and redemption of citizen participation. The brazilian system named "fala.br" is an example of an initial project of interactive digital system of open government that allows change of data with all federal organs and with these and other federated organs and, the most important, with the citizens. ; With the emergence of what is called 4.0 Revolution, with the technology advance, in the actual social, economic and ideological contexts all marked by relations and communications mediated by technology, there is no way for the Public Administration's future then using the same technology.

International audience From Vargas to Collor: faces of Brazilian populism, Camille Goirand. Brazil is obvioulsy a land of favor for populism. But the term there is used for many regional and national experiences. And today it's losing its force. Is it the sign of the disappearance of an exhausted political form or the announcement of its metamorphosis? Citer ce document / Cite this document : Goirand Camille. In R. Bastides work one theme appears constantly, that of the meeting of different civilizations and in particular the clash between black and white cultures in Brazil.
This article traces the origins and subsequent development of the Umbanda religion, and analyses its present social and religious characteristics, for it is an excellent field for studying Afro-Catholic syncretism in Brazil and also for testing the definition which R. B. suggests for this phenomenon in a study entitled « Collective memory and sociology of odd-jobs » (1970).
