Young hearts in Chinatown = 青心在唐人街 : Activating Public Space in Vancouver's Chinatown ; 青心在唐人街 = Young hearts in Chinatown
In: University of British Columbia. SCARP Graduating Projects
Over the summer of 2015, the Youth Collaborative for Chinatown worked to activate public spaces in Vancouver's Chinatown in an intergenerational, intercultural manner through a series of events: the "Hot and Noisy" (熱鬧) Chinatown Mahjong Socials. On the surface, our goal was simple: to bring back Chinatown's 熱鬧, or "yeet low" in Cantonese, – literally, "hot and noisy", or liveliness and energy. Below the surface, we had more complex goals of being able to bring a youth voice to planning processes about the future of Chinatown, and building up political and social capacity of young generations of Chinese Canadians. We decided that our approach to activating public space had several criteria. It needed to be visible. It needed to be collaborative. It needed to demonstrate a cohesive, coordinated effort undertaken by younger generations, with the ability to involve many others. It needed to be intercultural and multilingual. It needed to foster relationships between young and old. It needed to be feasible to implement within a very short time frame. It needed to involve no to low hard costs. And it needed to be possible with the resources and skills we could readily bring to the table, amongst our team of organizers. By temporarily activating a public space, there is an opportunity to both share and transform the stories that we tell ourselves and each other in relation to it, and to create spaces of belonging. Based on participant observation/action as a member of the Youth Collaborative for Chinatown, I describe the "Hot and Noisy" (熱鬧) Chinatown Mahjong Socials as a case study of a youth-driven, grassroots process in public space activation. I discuss lessons learned and the implications for planning, urban design and community organizing. ; Applied Science, Faculty of ; Community and Regional Planning (SCARP), School of ; Unreviewed ; Graduate

Connecting the Metropolis and the Colony: the Despatches from the Governors of Hong Kong to the Colonial Office of the UK, 1843 – 1926
; This study investigates into the communication history of Hong Kong from 1843 to 1926 in the colonial period. It aims to fill the gaps as seen in previous studies of the British Empire, British colonialism and the history of Hong Kong. The study has found that the time-consuming process of conveying official despatches to the Colonial Office posed persistent problems for both the Governors of Hong Kong and the Secretary of State in the United Kingdom. With the advent of the telegraph, however, more efficient communication between the counterparts was achieved. The Colonial Office was thus equipped with an efficient means for instant updating of the situation in Hong Kong as well as close monitoring of the administration of the Hong Kong government. Our study also analyses the "information order" existed within the correspondence between the Colonial Office and the Governors, which was considered to be framed by the rules and regulations imposed by the Colonial Office. Drawing upon statistical findings, the researcher argues that, apart from telegrams, confidential and secret despatches served as key components of the nerve system of the British rule; our examination of their usage, the underlying regulations and endorsement (or otherwise) from the home government serves to unmask the power relations as well as the conscious and subconscious anxieties of the Empire and its colonies. ; Cheng, Yui Tat. ; Thesis Ph.D. Chinese University of Hong Kong 2017. ; Includes bibliographical references (leaves ). ; Abstracts also in Chinese. ; Title from PDF title page (viewed on …). ; Detailed summary in vernacular field only.

(1947-1995) ; Zhi min di shi de xing bie wei du: Xianggang hua ren fu nü ji cheng quan wen ti (1947-1995)
; 關鍵詞:婦女繼承權、香港史、殖民主義、性別維度、法律與城鄉關係 ; In the late 19th Century, Hong Kong Island and Kowloon were ceded and the New Territories were leased to Britain. A dual system of law was established where the British and other non-Chinese obeyed the British law whereas the Chinese were allowed to abide by the Chinese law and custom under the condition that they did not violate the principles of the British law. The Chinese inheritance tradition as a part of the Chinese law and custom was stated in the Qing Code, under which women had no right of inheritance. Although the colonial government intended to amend the inheritance law for several times, it did not succeed until the late 20th century. Lamentably, in comparison to other Asian regions, Hong Kong spent several decades more to establish women's inheritance right. ; Although scholars nowadays pay more attention to the development of women's rights in Hong Kong, very little of their research pertains to women's inheritance right. To enrich the scholarship, this author holds that we should first trace the historical development of the establishment of women's inheritance right in Hong Kong. The reasons why it took so long for Hong Kong to establish this right will then be ...
