Après l'assassinat d'Itzhak Rabin, les gouvernements israéliens successifs ont transformé le processus de paix en processus de colonisation. Parallèlement, ils ont fait de leur pays le meilleur élève de la classe néo-libérale, accroissant considérablement les inégalités et contribuant ainsi à la radicalisation à droite d'Israël.

Cette « brutalisation » a changé le cours de l'histoire : elle a bouleversé la vision que les Européens avaient d'eux-mêmes et de leur rôle dans l'histoire de l'humanité, détruisant un optimisme multiséculaire et jetant un doute irréductible sur l'existence d'un « sens de l'histoire » synonyme de progrès humain, produisant une conscience de ce que l'inhumanité est potentiellement présente dans toute humanité. Le pire, pour n'être jamais sûr, ne peut plus être pensé comme absolument exclu.

The attacks in Paris in November 2015, the conflict in Syria and Iraq and the huge amount of political and media attention that these issues have had show that the problem of 'jihadist terrorism' is significant for Western nation-states. In this paper I examine some of the interdependent processes and relationships that have been contributing to 'jihadist terrorism' and use a number of figurational concepts with which to do this, including 'established-outsider figurations,' 'double-binds' and 'decivilising processes.' I focus specifically on the November 2015 Paris attacks and with the use of media reports and government documents discuss how the language used reveals the complexities of the 'established-outsider' figurations and double-binds that Western nation-states and 'jihadists' are locked into with each other, and how the structures of these relationships are contributing to 'decivilising' or 'brutalisation' processes of Western 'jihadists.' These brutalisation processes are, in turn, 'feeding back' and contributing to the double-binds within which Western nation-states and jihadist are caught.

La legiobanka, un outil contre la brutalisation de la mémoire de guerre Tchécoslovaque RéSUMé. — Le modèle d'analyse de George Mosse postulant la brutalisation des combattants et des sociétés européennes pendant la Première Guerre mondiale est très stimulant et sans doute très pertinent pour de nombreux pays d'Europe. Même s'il est redevable d'une critique comme tout modèle d'analyse, il s'applique généralement bien, y compris en Europe centrale, à l'histoire si particulière, à la mémoire si précaire. Une exception toutefois : la Tchécoslovaquie de l'entre-deux-guerres. La construction de la Legiobanka comme lieu de mémoire des légionnaires s'inscrit dans une perspective de refus de la brutalisation et dans l'exaltation de valeurs alternatives : pacifisme, solidarité, esprit constructif, soutien de l'activité économique, réinsertion des anciens combattants dans une société démocratique, promotion de l'art moderne.

Dans quelle mesure l'évolution de Martin Heidegger le conduisant en 1933 à appeler à « l'anéantissement total » de l'ennemi intérieur peut-elle être comprise par la théorie de George Mosse de la « brutalisation » de la politique allemande après la Première Guerre mondiale ? Vétéran quoique n'ayant pas connu la première ligne, Heidegger fut en effet radicalisé par son expérience de l'armée, sans que c'en fût la seule cause : le « mythe de l'expérience de la guerre », diffusé par la culture du temps, de même que la paix brutale subie par l'Allemagne, jouèrent également un rôle significatif et conforme aux thèses de Mosse. Cela n'aurait pu avoir lieu sans les arrière-plans idéologiques critiques de Heidegger : d'abord un catholicisme intransigeant, puis les idéaux du Mouvement de jeunesse, enfin le nazisme.

The recent bomb attacks at the Istanbul airport (28 June 2016), in a tourist cafe in Dhaka, Bangladesh (2 July), and in Bagdad (3 July) were part of a "Ramadan campaign" announced by the spokesman of the self‐declared "Islamic State" caliphate in late May 2016. This series of attacks was intended to make the Islamic holy month of Ramadan "a month of calamity everywhere for the non-believers." It has generated significant international attention for an organisation which has recently lost the cities of Ramadi and Falluja in Iraq and which is under serious pressure in the strategic city of Manbij in Syria. This article analyses the Islamic State's (IS) contextual use of different forms of violence and argues that the attacks and the defeats are two sides of one coin: the group is losing territory and credibility by failing to continue with its expansion of the universal Islamic caliphate that "Caliph" Abu Bakr promised in summer 2014; it is now compensating for these territorial losses by expanding its field of action through terrorist attacks, thereby suggesting a fictitious expansion. The article explains how the group has exhibited a three-stage "cycle of violence" in which violence has served specific functions. In the first stage, from roughly 2003 to 2010, violence was used as part of a mobilisation strategy. In the second stage, from 2010 to 2015, violence served mainly to facilitate the group's expansion and rule. In the third stage, which began in 2015, the increasingly brutal violence and the fictitious expansion have constituted the centrepiece of a survival strategy. Against this background, the article suggests that the Islamic State will most likely not have a future as a territorial entity but will, at best, survive as a terrorist apocalyptic sect.
