The emerging field of high energy atmospheric physics (HEAP) includes terrestrial gamma-ray flashes, electron-positron beams and gamma-ray glows from thunderstorms. Similar emissions of high energy particles occur in pulsed high voltage discharges. Understanding these phenomena requires appropriate models for the interaction of electrons, positrons and photons of up to 40MeV energy with atmospheric air. In this paper, we benchmark the performance of the Monte Carlo codes Geant4, EGS5 and FLUKA developed in other fields of physics and of the custom-made codes GRRR and MC-PEPTITA against each other within the parameter regime relevant for high energy atmospheric physics. We focus on basic tests, namely on the evolution of monoenergetic and directed beams of electrons, positrons and photons with kinetic energies between 100keV and 40MeV through homogeneous air in the absence of electric and magnetic fields, using a low energy cutoff of 50keV. We discuss important differences between the results of the different codes and provide plausible explanations. We also test the computational performance of the codes. This chapter summarizes the most representative software packages that readily allow running Monte Carlo (MC) simulations in relevant scenarios for drug design. It explores in detail the Protein Energy Landscape Exploration (PELE) program, providing first the main characteristics of the technique, followed by an analysis of the different application studies in mapping protein‐ligand interactions. The ligand, formed by a rigid core and a set of rotatable side chains, is perturbed by translating and rotating it. PELE creates a list of perturbation poses, and then chooses the one with the lowest system energy. PELE was originally designed to map ligand migration pathways: its first applications aimed at finding exit pathways starting from ligand‐bound crystallographic structures. Additional applied studies have centered on modeling enzymatic mechanisms and engineering; the same techniques applied in mapping protein‐drug interactions can be used in the study of substrate recognition by enzymes. ; Along the development of PELE in the last years, we gratefully acknowledge financial support from the European Union (in particular from the ERC program) and from the Catalan and Spanish Governments. The input required for a seismic hazard study using conventional Probabilistic Seismic Hazard assessment (PSHA) methods can also be used for probabilistic analysis of hazard using Monte Carlo simulation methods. This technique is very flexible, and seems to be under-represented in the literature. It is very easy to modify the form of the seismicity model used, for example, to introduce non-Poissonian behaviour, without extensive reprogramming. Uncertainty in input parameters can also be modelled very flexibly - for example, by the use of a standard deviation rather than by the discrete branches of a logic tree. In addition (and this advantage is perhaps not as trivial as it may sound) the simplicity of the method means that its principles can be grasped by the layman, which is useful when results have to be explained to people outside the seismological/engineering communities, such as planners and politicians. In this paper, some examples of the Monte Carlo method in action are shown in the context of a low to moderate seismicity area: the United Kingdom.

Oggetto della presente dissertazione è l'avvento della grande pittura decorativa barocca nell'Inghilterra di Carlo II. Si è inquadrato brevemente il contesto storico-culturale del periodo in questione: dalla fine del regno di Carlo I (1600-1649) alla restaurazione al trono di Carlo II (1630-1685) compresa la fase intermedia tra i due regni, detta del Commonwealth, che decretò un più rigido controllo delle arti. In merito all'ascesa di Carlo II, si è posto l'accento sulla volontà del sovrano di dare inizio a una nuova fase di mecenatismo, che lo vide promotore delle arti, in linea con quanto già avviato da suo padre Carlo I. In quest'ottica è risultato doveroso inquadrare il gusto che dominò durante il regno di Carlo II, individuando coloro che furono i principali artefici del patronage a corte e che contribuirono alla diffusione in Inghilterra del gusto imperante nel regno di Luigi XIV. Tra i royal favorites, si è fatto riferimento in particolare ai due ambasciatori del re: Lord Arlington e Ralph Montagu i quali, inviati in Francia da Carlo II, ebbero non solo il ruolo di intermediari politici, contribuendo alle segrete alleanze tra i due regni, ma divennero anche i promotori del trasferimento dei principali artisti francesi e italiani che, dalla Francia di Luigi XIV, lavorarono alla corte inglese. Delineato il quadro storico-culturale e individuate le connessioni alla base dei rapporti tra Francia e Inghilterra, si è sviluppato il tema principale del progetto: la nascita e la diffusione della decorazione barocca in Inghilterra e il suo legame con l'arte continentale. L'arrivo di Antonio Verrio (1636-1707) in Inghilterra è particolarmente significativo in relazione al ruolo che ebbero i suddetti ambasciatori. Invitato a trasferirsi sull'isola da Ralph Montagu, il pittore ebbe il suo primo incarico dal mecenate inglese, Lord Arlington, occupandosi della decorazione delle sue dimore, che gli consentì di entrare in contatto con il re in persona e ottenere numerosi incarichi da committenti privati e reali. Il caso di Antonio Verrio è particolarmente interessante. Il suo percorso artistico è infatti connesso da un lato al contesto italiano, che determinò la sua prima formazione, dall'altro al contesto francese dal quale, mediante il contatto con la scuola di Charles Le Brun (1619-1690), assunse quei precetti adottati nei futuri lavori in Inghilterra, che rappresentano la summa di queste esperienze nonché il corpus più cospicuo delle sue opere. Il richiamo alla decorazione di Windsor Castle, pone infine l'accento sull'apogeo della sua carriera e vuole celebrarne il nome. Particolare difficoltà si è riscontrata nella ricostruzione di alcuni lavori del pittore, le numerose lacune sono dovute alla distruzione di gran parte degli interni delle dimore da lui decorate. Un'utile fonte sono stati i diaristi e i viaggiatori dell'epoca, in particolare John Evelyn e Celia Fiennes che, attraverso dettagliate descrizioni, hanno fornito un supporto fondamentale, consentendo di dare un'idea, seppure parziale, dell'aspetto che dovevano avere questi interni. Si è voluto, inoltre, trascrivere il Testamento e l'Inventario dei Beni, entrambi documenti inediti, che il pittore fece stimare qualche giorno prima della sua morte nel 1707 e che ci consentono di delineare la posizione sociale dell'artista nell'ultima fase della sua carriera, quando continuò a lavorare per i successori di Carlo II: Giacomo II, Guglielmo e Maria, e infine per la regina Anna. L'obiettivo finale è stato quello di inquadrare, con un taglio trasversale, la figura dell'artista italiano nell'Inghilterra a cavallo tra fine Seicento e inizi Settecento. Recuperando la fitta trama di relazioni e rapporti tra coloro che prestarono servizio per Carlo II e che ebbero un ruolo decisivo - ma ancora poco indagato dagli studi storico-artistici - di mediatori culturali, si è così messa in rilievo l'esperienza di questo decoratore che, nel contesto inglese, contribuì alla diffusione di un nuovo genere, teso a celebrare i reali ma altrettanto effimero quanto le alterne sorti dei loro regni.

Il contributo intende illustrare l'organizzazione e l'andamento dei lavori della Commissione Franceschini grazie al recupero di documenti di archivio, pur nella persistente assenza dei verbali di lavoro. La documentazione rintracciata e analizzata permette di seguire l'andamento dei lavori e di individuare alcuni contrasti tra Massimo Pallottino, coordinatore del Gruppo sull'Archeologia, e Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti, che già aveva fatto parte della precedente Commissione Marangone. Emergono due posizioni significativamente diverse: da una parte, Pallottino svolge un ruolo determinante nell'assetto della Commissione Franceschini e nell'organizzazione delle discussioni; dall'altra Ragghianti mostra spesso, in forma più o meno esplicita, segnali di insofferenza e di non condivisione nei confronti del modus operandi della Commissione; il contrasto si acuisce fino alle sue dimissioni. Il contributo offre una preziosa griglia cronologica per ricostruire, anche in maniera allargata, il dibattito dell'epoca sui beni culturali e i sottesi contrasti politici e culturali.This contribution aims at describing the organisation and progress of the Franceschini Commission thanks to the recovery of archive documents, despite the persistent absence of working minutes. The documentation tracked down and analysed, however, makes it possible to follow the progresses of the discussion and to identify some contrasts between Massimo Pallottino, coordinator of the Archaeology Group, and Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti, who had already been part of the previous Marangone Commission. Two significantly different positions emerged: on the one hand, Pallottino played a decisive role in the organisation of the Franceschini Commission and in the discussions; on the other, Ragghianti often showed, in a more or less explicit shape, signs of impatience and disagreement with the modus operandi of the Commission; the conflict escalated until his resignation. Con l'arrivo a Napoli di Carlo di Borbone, nel 1734, cessata la plurisecolare dipendenza delle Sicilie da sovrani esterni e non residenti, prese subito avvio la formazione di una corte che divenne ben presto motivo di ammirazione per diplomatici e viaggiatori stranieri, oltre che uno dei simboli della politica di rafforzamento del nuovo Stato e della sua autonomia.A lungo trascurata dalla storiografia, la corte di Carlo e Maria Amalia viene qui indagata da punti di vista molteplici: le continuità e le discontinuità rispetto ai precedenti modelli vicereali e ad altri modelli europei, l'importanza simbolica di cerimonie e etichette nella costruzione di gerarchie cetuali e statuali, i contesti architettonici e la pluralità delle sedi, da Napoli e Capodimonte a Caserta e Carditello, da Portici a Persano. Nozze, nascite, funerali, rappresentazioni teatrali e scavi archeologici, partite di caccia e cerimonie laiche e religiose furono altrettante occasioni di esibizione della maestà del re e della sua munificenza, momenti celebrativi della unione tra il sovrano e il suo popolo. Variability of semiconductor devices is seriously limiting their performance at nanoscale. The impact of variability can be accurately and effectively predicted by computer-aided simulations in order to aid future device designs. Quantum corrected (QC) drift-diffusion (DD) simulations are usually employed to estimate the variability of state-of-the-art non-planar devices but require meticulous calibration. More accurate simulation methods, such as QC Monte Carlo (MC), are considered time consuming and elaborate. Therefore, we predict TiN metal gate work-function granularity (MGG) and line edge roughness (LER) induced variability on a 10-nm gate length gate-all-around Si nanowire FET and perform a rigorous comparison of the QC DD and MC results. In case of the MGG, we have found that the QC DD predicted variability can have a difference of up to 20% in comparison with the QC MC predicted one. In case of the LER, we demonstrate that the QC DD can overestimate the QC MC simulation produced variability by a significant error of up to 56%. This error between the simulation methods will vary with the root mean square (RMS) height and maximum source/drain $n$ -type doping. Many weapon effectiveness tools are implemented using a Monte Carlo simulation approach since closed form solutions are too mathematically intractable to compute. A question that usually arises in connection with such simulations is to ask how many iterations of a particular Monte Carlo simulation are needed. This report proposed the probability-based approach to computing effectiveness measures for better feedback to the user regarding the relationship between the number of iterations executed and confidence measures associated with the result. ; Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.

The aim of this article is the analysis of the reception of Carl Schmitt's Politische Romantik. The analysis shows that during the interwar years many scholars from different fields of academic research found this work to be a very original and fruitful interpretation of the Romantic movement. Two of the most influential interpretations of Politische Romantik were published during the interwar years. According to Hugo Ball's interpretation, Schmitt has to be understood primarily as a Catholic political philosopher. According to Karl Löwith, the German jurist is a representative of a nihilistic political thought. The analysis has in this paper shows that Ball's interpretation has to be considered as the better one. After the Second World War Politische Romantik became a forgotten book. Even after the international rebirth of interest in Schmitt's political thought his analysis of political romanticism has received only very little attention. Most scholars treat this work as if it were of secondary importance. Iš tarpukario Vokietijoje pasirodžiusių šiam veikalui skirtų darbų išskiriamos dvi pagrindinės interpretacijos – Hugo Ballo straipsnis "Carlo Schmitto politinė teologija" ir Karlo Löwitho "Okazionalus C. Schmitto decizionizmas". Siekiama atskleisti šių darbų idėjų pagrįstumą. Šiandien tarp tyrinėtojų įsitvirtinusi nuomonė, kad "Politinis romantizmas" yra antraeilis Schmitto veikalas, neturintis reikšmės jo politinės filosofijos visumai. Tai nepagrįstas požiūris. Šis veikalas rodo pagrindinių Schmitto politinės filosofijos idėjų ištakas ir yra svarbi jo pažiūrų sistemos dalis. Šiuo požiūriu pagrįsta yra Ballo pateikta "Politinio romantizmo" idėjų interpretacija.
