"Norway is by history and culture very much a Scandinavian nation with its own unique profile. This book analyzes the factors that have shaped the sociocultural fabric of Norwegian politics. One of the most important themes Heidar analyzes is the power of the periphery, both in social as well as geographic terms. In the geographic sense, Norway is a small nation, and although it has been able to remain economically and politically stable, it is situated on the European flank. It is therefore dependent upon and vulnerable to external economic and political developments. In critical periods of its history, Norway's size has made it an object rather than an initiator of change. In the social sense, Norway has existed as a?periphery nation?. It is this multi-dimensional center-periphery situation that has been crucial in shaping institutional structures and practices. Another theme that Heidar explores is Norway's enduring egalitarian culture. This book focuses on the primacy of politics in Norway and the role played by the nineteenth-century peasant movement and the twentieth-century labor movement in shaping modern Norway. Today, political and cultural traditions are challenged by the force of globalization. Norway is defined as a stable, parliamentary, multiparty system with a social democratic tradition. Sherry Ortner's account of the development of anthropological theory is admirable both because of the complexity of her argument and because it opens up a series of interesting possibilities for theoretical self-criticism among anthropologists. In this essay, I consider a theme which is not directly addressed in Ortner's piece, but which might usefully be considered in relation to it. The theme involves the significance of place in the construction of anthropological theory in the period since World War II.

Ever since the electoral turmoil of the early seventies, Scandinavia has been a market for alternative models. And, indeed, the left‐right conflict dimension has fallen short of accounting for everything as evidenced by, for instance, the recent breakdown of the three‐party bourgeois coalition government in Sweden.This paper focuses on the conflict structure in Swedish politics, mainly the genesis of the center‐periphery dimension.Methodological ambiguity in diffusion studies of the center‐periphery conflict is illustrated through some empirical data. It is argued that the Green Wave should not be seen as a manifestation of an allegedly latent center‐periphery cleavage, nor be construed as a sign of major transitions in Swedish politics. Explanations are offered as to why the comparatively strong counter‐cultural movements (the free churches and the temperance movement) never managed to secure a party of their own.

The field of digital humanities has expanded in recent years to encompass a range of practices and practitioners around the world and has changed the nature of scholarly communication. So too have emerged centers and peripheries of the field that privilege scholarly production of the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. This article examines efforts to challenge the hierarchical dimensions of power, making the case for viewing transnational scholarly networks through a logic of diaspora.
