Copper engraving. The Great Exemplar of Sanctity and holy life according to the Christian institution : described in the history of the life and death of the Ever Blessed Jesus Christ the Saviour of the world : with considerations and discourses upon the several parts of the story; and prayers fitted to the several mysteries : in three parts. Jeremy Taylor's The Great Exemplar, is considered to be the first narrative account of the life of Christ to be printed in English. First in his series of devotional works, The Great Exemplar became one of the most popular selling books of the seventeenth century. Born and educated in in Cambridge, Taylor (ca. 1613-1667) was consecrated Bishop of Down and Connor in Ireland in 1658, where he would come to experience great difficulty during an era of religious and political crisis. The engraver of this plate was William Faithorne (ca. 1616-1691), a Londoner, who was at one point taken as a political prisoner during the English Civil War; yet whom was remarkably allowed to continue to engrave portraits while imprisoned! Analysis In this illustration the twelve apostles are gathered closely around a table, with Christ positioned at the center. Here we can see a plate before him. There is bread on the table, and a cup. One of the apostles seems to rest his head on the figure of Christ. John 13:21-25 reads: When Jesus had thus spoken, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, "Truly, truly I say to you, one of you will betray me." The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was lying close to the breast of Jesus; so Simon Peter beckoned to him and said, "Tell us who it is of whom he speaks." In the center of the illustration we can see that Jesus' hand gestures towards the figure in the foreground, Judas, seen holding the bag of silver. The apostles are shown reacting to the foretelling of the betrayal; turning towards one another, or holding their hands in expressive gestures. The identity of the "disciple whom Jesus loved," is the topic of much inquiry. Some biblical scholars believe it is John the Apostle, some Jesus' brother James, and some Mary Magdalene (among many other theories). ; https://digitalcommons.lasalle.edu/last_supper_iconography/1004/thumbnail.jpg

; This dissertation uncovers the history of the journal "Arzt und Christ" from its first volume in 1955 to 1993 when it was renamed "Zeitschrift für medizinische Ethik". The aim is to show the journal's contribution to the early history of the professionalization of medical ethics in the German-speaking countries. In the first part, the persons behind the journal and their professional disciplines are portrayed with the help of prosopography. In the second part, the thematic scope of articles is qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed and the relevance for the field of medical ethics is assessed. To that purpose the subjects are compared with those discussed in the German political magazine "Der Spiegel". ; 2018-02-20

(SWP-Aktuell)

This dissertation offers an analysis of two American religionsthe Church of Christ, Scientist (CS), and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS)and the ways that their particular/peculiar ideologies regarding the body govern the everyday realities of their respective memberships. Biopower is the political power used to control bodies and bodily actions, such as the care of oneself, and the details of personal family life. Belief can act as an especially powerful agent of biopolitical power as it inspires a lived faithfulness through its various theologies. What is more, the effects of biopolitical belief are often complicated by the mixed interests of Church and State, leaving the territory of the individual body a disputed claim. To better understand these disputes, this project utilizes a Foucaultian interpretation of the CS and LDS churches to better understand the roots of the biopolitical conflicts they confront. Specifically, the histories and contemporary practices of these religious organizations are analyzed through a genealogical method, using Foucaultian interpretations of the biopolitical, pastoral, and psychiatric powers they use to effectively govern the minds, bodies, and spirits of their people. A historical background of the CS and LDS churches traces the emergence of the biopolitical practices of each group by evaluating their groundedness in their current social-political milieus, and by making connections between their respective religious beliefs, practices, and government and the broader Jacksonian American political culture into which they were born. Additionally, this particular form of analysis poses important questions for the study of religion and politics today. Although most of the examples used in this study are historical, both the LDS and CS churches continue to hold on to many if not all of the theologies and doctrines which historically brought them into conflict with the US government. What has changed is not the belief itself, but the embodiment of it, and also the state and federal government reaction to it. Therefore, the theological histories and founding stories of these religions remain relevant to their contemporary status as extra-statal biopolitical forces within the US today. ; Ph. D.

Oscar Wilde and Émile Zola are conventionally opposed as the figureheads of, respectively, the aestheticist and the naturalist literary trends that dominated the fin-de-siècle literary field. Yet they also exhibit a number of uncanny similarities—not least the turn both made in their last years towards religious themes and imagery, and especially those of martyrdom and the Passion. This article explores such images in the later life, work, and public persona of both writers, and sets them within the context of the proliferation of references to Christ and martyrdom in fin-de-siècle literary culture, particularly at the time of the Dreyfus Affair. From Ernest Renan's sentimental account of Jesus' life and death, via the Decadent obsession with images of abjection and suffering, to the nascent homoerotic tradition recognizing in the figure of the martyr a confluence of the abject and the sublime that seemed to allegorize queer desire, the article traces the competing and conflicting influences acting on Wilde's and Zola's writing about Christ and martyrdom. It examines the "entailments"—the unexpected consequences, meanings, and echoes—that these overdetermined themes brought in their train from the wider literary field. It also shows how those entailments were exacerbated by the massive politicization of "martyr" discourse around the time of the Dreyfus Affair, when the theme acquired its fullest significance—before dissolving into an incoherence symptomatic of a crisis of moral discourse at the turn of the century.

; The master's thesis deals with two questions: First, how Christian soldiers in the Roman legion reconciled their faith and military service? Second, how Christian soldiers were perceived by the Christian civilians? Both questions also investigate how far changes in behavior and perception can be detected. To answer these two questions, the Roman religious policy is briefly outlined and the everyday religious life in the Roman army is explained. After reviewing the attitude of Jesus and the apostles on the compatibility of the new doctrine and military service, the views of the Fathers of the Church on this subject are examined, followed by the attitude of the Didache and the Traditio Apostolica. On the basis of five selected, representative martyr acts it is shown which motives could lead to a break-up within the Roman military. The traditional ways of behaving, how Christian soldiers survived in the army, are outlined, but also modern theories in this regard are described. Finally, it will be discussed to what extent changes have taken place since Constantine came to power. ; vorgelegt von Winfried Kumpitsch ; Zusammenfassungen in Deutsch und Englisch ; Abweichender Titel laut Übersetzung des Verfassers/der Verfasserin ; Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz, Masterarbeit, 2018 ; (VLID)2581657

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the Mormon or LDS church, constitute an organization that transcends simple denominational status. Though the Mormons were originally one of a multitude of restorationist churches emerging out of the ferment known as the Second Great Awakening in the early nineteenth century, a number of factors conspired to forge an entity variously considered a religion, a people, a global tribe, and a New Religious Movement (NRM), the only "indigenously derived ethnic group" in the United States and an emerging world religion. Mormonism's distinctive doctrines challenge the boundaries of Christian orthodoxy, while a history of persecution and exile fostered a close-knit Mormon community with fierce intragroup loyalties. In addition, authoritarian leadership and superefficient worldwide correlation of all church programs and instructional materials establish an uncommon degree of uniformity and conformity, while unusually intense requirements of sacrifice, commitment, lifestyle practices, and service far surpass the norms of a nominal, Sunday-only, Christian observance. One of the fast growing churches in the world, Mormonism has enjoyed a colorful history characterized by charismatic beginnings, new scripture, and violent confrontation with its host society that gradually has transformed into its current position of utmost respectability in mainstream American society. Once condemned by non-Mormon preachers and politicians, Mormons are now lauded by observers as "the American religion" and praised by presidents and public figures for their family values, clean living, healthy lifestyle, and humanitarian outreach to members and nonmembers alike.
