African (A) animistic communal society links its religion with the totality of life. It regards the West & all its people & products as Christian. The impact of Western Christianity has been the strongest element in the change of the past 3 generations. These influences have been mediated through the following concepts: (1) individual choice, (2) the whole man, (3) self-help, & (4) displacement of animism. Parallelling these are the factors of: (1) medical & health gains introduced by the missionaries, & (2) the adoption of Christianity (Christians now number about 21 millions). The denominational multiplicity of Christianity creates a conflict for the A & has limited Christianity's contribution. The tendency toward denominational splits has been adopted locally; thus in the Union of S. Africa alone there are more than 1,100 separatist A denominations. D. L. Levine.
