What does Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus tell us about the author and the time at which the play was written? This unit will help you to discover the intricacies of the play and recognise how a knowledge of the historical and political background of the time can lead to a very different understanding of the author's intended meaning.

In The Marlowe-Shakespeare Continuum, Donna N. Murphy demonstrates how Christopher Marlowe, sometimes in co-authorship with humorist Thomas Nashe, appears to have "become" Shakespeare on a linguistic basis. She documents a sharp, upward learning curve, with the initial penning of works she examines in the following chronological order: Caesar's Revenge, II Henry VI, The Taming of a Shrew, III Henry VI, Edward III, Titus Andronicus, Thomas of Woodstock, Romeo and Juliet, and I Henry IV, and separates certain plays into Marlowe and Nashe components. Those who read Murphy's book with an open mind are likely to find her work surprisingly convincing.

Although scholars of both literature and history have made arguments for Christopher Marlowe's religious belief in Catholicism, the Church of England, and even atheism (which could have been conflated with both by different parties during his lifetime), few consider the belief system of the Polish Brethren, a precursor to Unitarianism established by one Faustus Socinus. This essay uses historical and social network analyses to suggest a close tie between Marlowe's acquaintances and believers in Socinianism. Clues in Doctor Faustus and Massacre at Paris suggest Marlowe's skepticism concerning the doctrines of Catholicism, Lutheranism, and Calvinism. Furthermore, repeated references to Poland and the beliefs of the Socinians suggest Marlowe's familiarity with the doctrine of the Polish Brethren. Finally, the complex ties between the Elizabethan Secret Service—of which Marlowe was a member—and the early modern royal courts across Europe provide evidence that the Reformation in England was shaped by far more complex—and even modern—ideas of religious diversity than we typically credit. For Marlowe, these influences produced a deep-seated resentment of organized religion and its impact on the anti-Catholic policies of the Elizabethan government during the 1580s and early 1590s.

La tesi consiste in un elaborato scritto, incentrato su alcuni aspetti tematici dell'opera drammaturgica di Christopher Marlowe, autore elisabettiano vissuto dal 1564 al 1593. Conseguentemente, le sette opere marlowiane sono prese in considerazione per valutare questioni, conflitti, problematiche ed innovazioni, nonché per approfondire gli aspetti strettamente drammaturgici, quali personaggi, trame delle opere e differenze qualitative tra le stesse. Al termine del lavoro, una conclusione riassuntiva cercherà di delineare quella che è stata la fortuna editoriale e scenica di questo autore, un autore tendenzialmente dimenticato e lentamente riscoperto a partire dal XX secolo. In Italia, ed in generale fuori dall'Inghilterra, l'opera di Marlowe tarda ancora ad essere considerata, anche se non sono mancate messinscene o rielaborazioni da parte dei grandi nomi del teatro del '900. Tramite questa tesi si intende addentrarsi nell'opera marlowiana evitando il confronto (giustificato, ma spesso invasivo) con i lavori di un grande e più fortunato contemporaneo, William Shakespeare. Nonostante la sua scomparsa a soli ventinove anni, Marlowe ha fornito molte possibilità di riflessione sul mondo nonché innovazioni al teatro stesso, e si ritiene quindi utile avvicinarsi maggiormente a questo autore, date le sue qualità drammaturgiche ed ideologiche. La scena di Marlowe è una scena potente ed imponente, violenta, che alterna rumoroso e silenzioso, l'estroverso e l'introverso. Le tragedie di questo autore avrebbero ancora molto da dire ai nostri giorni, nonostante i lunghi momenti di silenzio che hanno dovuto subire sia a causa della censura che per una forma di sottovalutazione ed indifferenza da parte dei postumi. La lungimiranza ed il valore riflessivo riscontrabile in Marlowe può tornare nuovamente comprensibile ai giorni nostri, può essere colta dalle consapevolezze che il nostro contemporaneo ci permette di raggiungere. Marlowe è un autore che non rimane indifferente ai suoi lettori/spettatori: positivo o negativo che sia il giudizio nei suoi confronti, chi conosce queste opere non può non esserne colpito. L'elaborato è suddiviso in due parti. La prima di queste, intitolata Sangue, religione, potere è a sua volta suddivisa in due capitoli, ovvero Fede, passione e politica e Aspirare a Dio. Ambedue questi capitoli sono dedicati a ricostruire ed approfondire le trame delle opere prese in considerazione: nel primo capitolo vengono trattati La strage di Parigi, l'Edoardo II e L'ebreo di Malta; nel secondo, invece, troviamo il Tamerlano il Grande Parte I, il Tamerlano il Grande Parte II ed Il dottor Faust. Il capitolo conclusivo di questa prima parte si incentra a ricostruire il Didone, regina di Cartagine. La seconda parte è invece suddivisa in più capitoli: Ironia e farsa; Amore, sessualità, personaggi femminili; Individualità e collettività tra vecchio e nuovo mondo. Come i titoli stessi suggeriscono, questa seconda parte dell'elaborato, complementare alla prima, tende ad approfondire ulteriormente alcune tematiche presenti nella drammaturgia di Marlowe, avvicinandosi ancor più ai personaggi e al pensiero, implicito o esplicito, dell'autore. Anche qui sarà presente un capitolo conclusivo, che tenterà stavolta di riflettere su come le opere marlowiane possono essere recepite da un eventuale lettore o spettatore, e di come e perché questi lavori sono spesso risultati scandalosi, scioccanti, anti-convenzionali. Le due parti della tesi sono precedute da una Premessa biografica, che introduce al lavoro di questo drammaturgo inglese cercando di ricostruire una cronologia della composizione delle sue opere, e delle problematiche che si riscontrano nel voler perseguire questo intento. Le uniche opere di cui abbiamo maggior certezza sono le due parti del Tamerlano il grande, pubblicate nel 1590 sotto supervisione dell'autore. Le altre pubblicazioni sono postume, e non è facile quindi stabilire un ordine preciso. Il Didone, regina di Cartagine è stato tuttavia scritto durante gli anni universitari di Marlowe, dunque entro il 1587, e corrisponde quindi alla sua prima opera. Se i due Tamerlano sono stati scritti entro il 1590 (forse nel 1587-88), non sappiamo riguardo l'Edoardo II, Il dottor Faust, La strage di Parigi, L'ebreo di Malta. I saggi di riferimento presi in considerazione per l'elaborato sono sia in lingua italiana che in lingua inglese. Le edizioni dei testi drammaturgici sono diverse, anche se per le traduzioni in italiano sono state privilegiate le versioni di Rodolfo Wilcock pubblicate in un unico volumetto da Adelphi (2002).

Building on the issue of genealogy of the history play I touched on in my previous article, this contribution examines how the characters in Christopher Marlowe's attempt at a proto-history play and of his preceding historical tragedies lead us both to the historical memory that a London Elizabethan theatregoer might have had, and to his imaginary polities where the plays were set — from the conventional Orient conquered by Tamburlaine, to England and France. The degree of detail and internal coherence of a polity could have had an impact of the traumatic effect of scenic violence. ; Продолжая начатую в предыдущей работе тему генеалогии английской хроники (history play), статья посвящена тому, как действия героев исторических пьес Марло и предшествовавших им трагедий на историческом материале связаны, с одной стороны, с исторической памятью, присущей лондонскому зрителю позднеелизаветинской эпохи, а с другой, с характеристиками воображаемых им политий, где происходит действие пьес — от условного «Востока», завоеванного Тамерланом, до Англии и Франции. Степень проработанности этой политии и связей внутри нее, вероятно, могла определять уровень «травматичности» показанного на сцене.

Taking into consideration Hayden White's seminal argument about historical emplotment, and relating such notion to traditional explanations about the ritualistic structure of Tudor historiography, this article reassesses Chistopher Marlowe's Edward II (ca. 1592) from the perspective of genre in order to expose how the play counter-effects the dominant ideology of the Tudor regime concerning royal authority. The encodation of historical events into the icon of romance, and the dramatic superimposition of tragic conventions upon such an iconic structure arguably confront two opposing modes of representing violence onstage, which determines a theatrical interplay of power discourses that arguably dramatizes the desacralization of kingship through the immanent representation of its sacredness. As this article argues, these dialectics articulates the political anxieties of Renaissance England from within generic categories, and it effectively subverts the well-established strategies of legitimization that idealized (and rewrote) violence, history and monarchy in Tudor England.

This thesis is the first sustained study of Christopher Marlowe's strategic handling of medieval literature. This study identifies and explores Marlowe's subversive use of a range of medieval material, both textual and cultural, in his dramas. In addition to identifying Marlowe's medieval sources, this thesis also delineates how this material was used: to offer a subtle and subversive critique of the core principles of Elizabethan ideology. After first establishing Marlowe's medieval sources, his "medieval library," this study then explores the ultra-specific application of this material across Marlowe's oeuvre. Close textual analysis of Marlowe's seven plays is the main methodology utilised in this study, facilitating the discovery of Marlowe's politic evocation of medieval literature. This thesis seeks to advance our understanding of Marlowe's subversive theatre by identifying his unique and subversive medievalism.

Tarkastelen tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassa Christopher Marlowen näytelmää Edward II (n. 1594) yhteiskunnallisesti radikaalina oman aikansa teoksena. Pyrin osoittamaan, että Marlowen näytelmä haastaa aikansa dominantteja käsityksiä poliittisista ja sosiaalisista ilmiöistä. Siinä missä Elizabethin ajan hallinto pyrki ylläpitämään yhteiskunnallista järjestystä välittämällä kansalaisilleen providentialistista maailmankuvaa, viime vuosikymmenten materialistinen kirjallisuuskritiikki on painottanut renessanssin ajan teatterin ja draaman roolia tämän ideologian vastustajana. Käsittelen tutkielmassani Edward II:n radikaalisuutta useilla eri osa-alueilla. Edward II:sta puuttuu paitsi omalle ajalleen ominainen providentialistinen maailmankuva, mutta se myös kuvaa Englannin epävakaana ja jakaantuneena kansakuntana vastoin hallinnon ylläpitämää harmonista mielikuvaa pimeän keskiajan jälkeisestä poliittisesti vakaasta valtiosta. Lisäksi näytelmässä hovi esitetään vailla hierarkiaa ja teatraalisuutta, jotka olivat keskeisiä tekijöitä hallitsijan vallan ylläpitämisessä 1500-luvun Englannissa. Toisaalta Marlowe käyttää hyväkseen myös renessanssin teatterin ideologista voimaa, sillä teatterissa myös kuningas voitiin asettaa tarkkailun alaiseksi, mikä mahdollisti esityksestä maksaneelle yleisölle tietyn autonomisen roolin hallitsijan arvostelijoina. Esittämällä Kuningas Edwardin sodomiittisen suhteen hyväksyttävänä, kyseenalaistamalla tämän pätevyyden hallitsijana sekä paljastamalla tämän salamurhan häikäilemättömänä poliittisena hirmutekona vailla moraalisia opetuksia Marlowe kritisoi hyveellisen hallitsijan ympärille muodostettua illuusiota. Tämän lisäksi tulee huomioida, että historianäytelmänä Edward II ymmärrettiin ajankohtaisen poliittisen ilmapiirin allegoriana eikä ainoastaan historiallisten tapahtumien kuvauksena. Kulttuurimaterialistinen kirjallisuudentutkimus on pyrkinyt paikantamaan renessanssin ajan teoksista toisinajattelua, kun taas uushistorismi on usein tyytynyt esittämään tämän toisinajattelun ainoastaan vallitsevaa hegemoniaa voimistavana. Tavoitteenani on kuitenkin osoittaa, että teatterilla oli erityinen ideologinen asema Elizabethin ajan Englannissa, mikä teki siitä yhteiskunnallisesti merkittävän instituution. This dissertation is about the representation of queens in early modern English drama through the tragic figures of Dido in Dido, Queen of Carthage , by Christopher Marlowe, Lady Macbeth in Macbeth and Cleopatra in Antony and Cleopatra by William Shakespeare, as well as the eponymous character in The Duchess of Malfi by John Webster. The theory of the king's two bodies by Ernst Kantorowicz, once applied to queenship, sheds light on the complex alliance between the queens' gender identity and their political authority. This leads to a reflection on the importance of spectatorship, representation and theatricality in their exercise of power. These elements draw a parallel between the characters under scrutiny and a historical figure. As a matter of fact, the Renaissance was a period deeply influenced by feminine reigns, among which that of Elizabeth I in England. Her use of her gender identity and of theatrical representation may offer a useful point of comparison with her fictive counterparts to better understand her influence upon the evolution of the representation of queens on stage. ; Ce mémoire examine la figure des reines dans le théâtre anglais de la première modernité à travers les personnages tragiques de Didon dans Dido, Queen of Carthage , de Christopher Marlowe, de Lady Macbeth dans Macbeth et de Cléopâtre dans Antony and Cleopatra de William Shakespeare, ainsi que du personnage éponyme de The Duchess of Malfi de John Webster. La théorie des deux corps du roi d'Ernst Kantorowicz, appliquée aux souveraines, permet de mieux comprendre l'alliance complexe entre leur identité de genre et leur autorité politique. Cela mène à une réflexion sur la place accordée au regard et à la théâtralité dans leur exercice du pouvoir. Ces éléments créent un parallèle entre les personnages étudiés et un personnage historique. En effet, la Renaissance fut une époque fortement marquée par des règnes féminins, notamment celui d'Élisabeth I en Angleterre. Son rapport à son identité de genre et au spectacle permet de la comparer à ses homologues fictives pour mieux comprendre son influence sur l'évolution de la représentation des reines sur scène.
