The policies of colonial African governments which directly affect the administration of foreign missions at work in Africa today are reviewed and interpreted under the topics of (1) background differentials between traditionally Catholic and Protestant colonial governments; (2) right of entry and freedom to conduct missionary activity; (3) Church-government collaboration with examples drawn from recent African history; (4) the Church in situations of tension and conflict, which includes a set of criteria for Christian action and for missionaries in relation to governments in mission areas; (5) moral responsibilities of colonial governments in relation to the administration of foreign missions; (6) policy observations on problems of education, church-state collaboration, and the obligation to respect and preserve the integrity of native cultures. These are based on observations gathered as an administrator of Protestant mission work in the Belgian Congo. M. F. Lewis.
