Roberta (Robbie) Jaffe grew up in New York in the 1950s, and moved to Florida when she was sixteen. She attended the University of Florida and University of South Florida, and graduated with a degree in sociology. During and after college she was deeply involved in the United Farm Workers (UFW) movement as a field organizer and boycott organizer for the state of Florida. Jaffe first came to the Santa Cruz area with her then-husband, Jerry Kay, who was also active in the sustainable agriculture movement. They farmed ten acres near Elkhorn Slough, and in 1976, Jaffe helped start the first farmers' market in Santa Cruz County, at Live Oak School. After that marriage ended, Jaffe studied horticulture at Cabrillo College with Richard Merrill, and took a position with a CETA (Comprehensive Employment and Training Act) program called Project Blossom. As part of that program, she co-founded a school garden at Green Acres School in Live Oak, a semi-rural area near Santa Cruz, California. This was the genesis of the Life Lab Science Program, which grew into a groundbreaking nonprofit organization that works with schools throughout the United States to develop school gardens and curriculum for teaching science and nutrition. Jaffe served as founding executive director of the program for many years. Jaffe earned a second master's degree in education from UC Santa Cruz, with an emphasis in agroecology. She met and married Steve Gliessman (also the subject of an oral history in this series). In 2001, they co-founded the Community Agroecology Network (CAN). CAN defines its goals as, "to help a network of rural, primarily coffee-growing communities in Mexico and Central America develop self-sufficiency and sustainable growing practices, and direct market coffee to consumers in the United States." Jaffe is the co-author of "From Differentiated Coffee Markets Towards Alternative Trade and Knowledge Networks," in Confronting the Coffee Crisis: Sustaining Livelihoods and Ecosystems in Mexico and Central America, and many Life Lab publications, including The Growing Classroom. Farmer's MA thesis (in public policy) at California State University at Monterey Bay focused on the coffee crisis. As a graduate student, she worked with Jaffe at CAN, and brought her knowledge of the economics and politics of coffee growing in Latin America to the interview.

The governance of modern science requires a heightened sensitivity to societal issues in relation to, and in particular within, the life sciences. Current opinion about practices, potential achievements and applications of genomics research oscillates between hope and fear; promise and realization; intended and unintended consequences; knowledge and non-knowledge; understanding and misunderstanding—on all sides, including scientists. Governments, research funding agencies and industry seem to have learnt, to some extent, that what was once fittingly called "organized irresponsibility" (Beck, 1995) must be transformed into 'organized responsibility' if scientific research, new therapies and diagnostics, improved health care, and new consumer products and services are to stand any chance of being accepted by society.

This research project aims to design a course outline, syllabus, and reading package for a "Management of Cooperatives" course that will be offered at the University of Winnipeg (Faculty of Business and Economics) in the fall of 2010. Current undergraduate and graduate level courses at different universities across Canada that examine cooperatives will be researched in the development of this project. Cooperatives aim to meet the social and economic goals of their membership while their equal distribution of profits and their democratic decision making process differentiate them notably from other types of businesses, especially private firms. For this reason, those involved with cooperatives require a different management and governance education than the mainstream education that is primarily geared toward the private enterprise model. However, undergraduate classes on the management of cooperatives are not part of the curricula in most Canadian universities. Cooperative management education has been identified as a priority need by the cooperative community in Manitoba, and this research will address this by designing a complete university level class curriculum that will be the first of its kind in Manitoba at the post-secondary level, and the first of its kind at an undergraduate level in Canada.

With China's emergence as a global manufacturing centre, reshaping the country's logistics industry is assuming a global dimension too. The Chinese transport sector, despite its tremendous potential in facilitating the economic development of the country, is plagued with problems of insufficient infrastructure; overlapping regulatory authority; operational inefficiencies and a lack of logistics culture. The thesis shows that China urgently needs to restructure the architecture of its transport industry by incorporating logistics thinking and by embodying the strategic objectives of logistics development. Restructuring the architecture of transport logistics (ATL) aims to improve, the mechanism of integrated operations and planning, as well as the development of transport logistics infrastructure and facilities. Based on experiences from developed economies as a reference, and by integrating its own conditions and situation, the thesis argues that China needs to strengthen co-ordination and harmonization among the various components of its logistics system. The architecture of transport logistics (ATL) consists of an integrated and coordinated system. The main function of the system is to accelerate interaction and coordination among transport logistics enterprises, government agencies, and relevant institutions at national level. This research presents a framework for the establishment of an efficient ATL system in China with appropriate structure, complete functions, and efficient operations. The presented framework focuses on the macroeconomic environment of transport logistics and supporting systems, presenting at the same time a monitoring and early warning system for effective pre-emptive decision making at policy level.

This article proposes an adaption of the Toulmin model of argumentation as a congenial method to investigate interactive political learning processes. The interactive learning environment is provided by the "Found-a-Village" project, where students simulate to establish their own social and political system. I will start my essay by introducing the "genetic" village-setting which works as a trigger for the formation of political judgment and conflict resolution skills. Then, I will define claims, grounds, warrants and premises as basic parts of Toulmin's model. After presenting six types of politically relevant warrants, I will present a four-level-model for the analysis of political learning processes, distinguishing private, public, institutional and systemic perspectives on politics. Later on, I apply this model by comparing two quite different classes during the initial phase of their village-projects: While the "public" class uses the simulation to seriously negotiate their political values, the second class takes a fairly playful and "private" time-out from typical instruction. Both classes, at a different speed, undergo a continual development from unfounded claims and inadequate arguments to the reflection of their own and opposed political value-orientations. The analysis of implicit parts of individual argumentation confirms the method to be helpful for teachers' diagnosis skills.

Deliberation is an understudied aspect of common-pool resource theory that could be developed by a closer connection to deliberative democratic theory. Co-management studies may also provide needed empirical insights to deliberative democratic theory. A framework is developed to analyze to what degree co-management arrangements incorporate deliberative elements. To test its usefulness, a case study of a co-management process in Sweden is analyzed. In Funäsdalsfjällen, a conflict-ridden situation caused by snowmobiles ended in agreement and the establishment of a municipal regulation area. Central and regional authorities initially failed to resolve the conflict, but when the municipality started working directly with the relevant interest groups, agreement was reached. Deliberative elements are shown central to the success, and it is concluded that co-management and deliberative democratic approaches indeed do cross-fertilize one another.

Co – ownership can be common partial ownership or common joint ownership. Common partial ownership is ownership when shares of each co-owner are established in the co-ownership, while common joint ownership right is ownership when such shares are not established. The purview of exercise of the owners' rights was the main discrepancy, which determined the separation between individual co – ownership and co – ownership. The owners of individual ownership implement their rights considering the law and the rights and concerns of third parts. The owners of co – ownership exercise their rights considering the law and the rights and concerns of third parts and other co – owners (the consistence of concerns). Such a determination influenced some peculiarities of the co – owners' rights and duties and their exercise. The common elements of shared ownership are defined in the Civil code of the Republic of Lithuania, in the fourth book (tangible law), V chapter, section four. The specific elements of shared ownership are defined also in the Civil code of the Republic of Lithuania and in other legislation - Homeowners' association law and Gardeners' association law. The common joint ownership exists only while talking about marriage and the joint ownership assert as statutory legal regime of property of spouses. The third book (family law), VI chapter, second section in the Civil code of the Republic of Lithuania regulates common joint ownership. The legal relations between co – owners are confusing because the object subject to common partial ownership is possessed, used and disposed of by a common agreement of co-owners. Such the exercise of the owners' rights is inefficiency and complicated. According to these reasons the legislator determined the peculiar rights and duties of co – owners and the peculiar exercise of co – owners' rights and duties. Considering to what was mentioned and also according to the theme and purpose of the work, the peculiarities of rights and duties of common partial ownership of owners of flats and other premises, of common partial ownership of owners of garden – plots, of joint ownership of spouses and of other essentials for co – ownership to appear and the exercise of all these rights and duties are analysed in this work. More attention was paid to confusing and tricky co – owners' rights and duties and to their specific exercise. Most common problems were analysed and summed up. The recommendations and solutions were supplied.

Co-management of fisheries in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region (ISR) began with the establishment of the Fisheries Joint Management Committee (FJMC) in 1986, one of the provisions of the Inuvialuit Final Agreement (IFA) signed in 1984. The agreement between the Inuvialuit and the Canadian Government with regards to renewable resource management was arranged as a collaborative management process that included knowledge and insight from both sides. This thesis uses the case of beluga entrapment in the Husky Lakes, NWT, to explore how co-management between the Tuktoyaktuk Hunter and Trapper Committee (HTC) and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) has changed through time in structure and process, and to determine what impacts co-management has had on Inuvialuit involvement in management. Additionally, the linkage between co-management and adaptive capacity at the local level is analyzed in order to better understand how Inuvialuit involvement in fisheries management can have beneficial impacts on cultural preservation, youth education, and employment. This study employed the use of mixed qualitative and quantitative methods within a participatory approach, which aimed at including the community of Tuktoyaktuk in every step of the research process. Qualitative methods included informal discussions, semi-directed interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. Community research partners were also essential in accessing information and interviews. The quantitative method used in this study was the use of questionnaires for Social Network Analysis (SNA) in attempting to describe the changes in the management network over time. ; February 2011
