Despite the differences in our cultural, economic, and political systems China and Australia are societies sharing rapidly urbanising futures. This presents significant challenges for urban planning, placemaking, and the sustainability of livable, urban communities. Using Chongqing as a case study, metaPLACE is an experimental project investigating how participatory urban media (large and small interactive screens, installations, façades, and devices) can act as a co-designed interface between diverse community, industry, and government stakeholders. The empirical data gathered from a co-design workshop held in Chongqing in 2019 indicates there are a range of opportunities and concerns related to equitable placemaking, the environment, the nature of interfaces and participation, ownership and management of data, large and small screens, and cultural and generational considerations. Our critical and comparative analysis of the research design and cultural factors influencing the co-design process, reveal deficiencies in widely accepted models of user experience design and design process used across industry and design research. This has significant implications for transcultural and interdisciplinary co-design and the establishment of a viable Sino-Australian design ecosystem.

China's hyper-speed modernisation process generates complex problems demanding new approaches to designing equitable, integrated, liveable, urban and rural places. The Chinese hinterland city of Chongqing's vast urban and rural area provides rich opportunities for investigating how art and design can help address related liveability and place-making challenges. This research aims to use Sino-Australian co-design to test how participatory urban media (large and small interactive screens, installations, façades, and devices) can act as a dialogic interface between diverse community, industry, and government stakeholders to increase our capacity to manage regional urban place-making problems. Our paper presents three empirical perspectives critically reflecting on a two-day co-design workshop conducted in Chongqing during December 2019 prior to the COVID19 pandemic. Informed by our own observations, and insights contributed by participating urban planners, architects, artists, designers, local government, academics, and students, we take a multi-vocal approach to evaluating the workshop methods, outcomes, and interactions. The unfolding narrative illustrates how transcultural and interdisciplinary co-design processes are entangled in language, local knowledge and traditions, socio-cultural hierarchies, different disciplinary fields and levels of professional status, as well as assumed Western design histories and local understandings of the role of art and design in relation to society. We argue these factors also influence the presentation of knowledge in academic writing about design. This highlights the urgent need for pluriversal modes of co-design, research through design, and scholarship about design which can inclusively impact and respond to the diverse needs of the new international situation and our shared urban futures.

The design of this research is based on the liberal pluralism belief that there should be various forms of alternative media co-existing with mainstream media, and the society benefits from having alternatives. The concept of alternative media refers to media that are independent from the political and market power. They deal with alternative topics, which are not covered in their mainstream counterparts. One of the traditions of alternative media research is to examine their potential in the formation of subaltern public sphere. ; The core question of this research is to explore the usage of online alternative media, and the link between online alternative media and the ideal of subaltern public sphere, in terms of attitude towards difference, rational discussion and civic participation. Participatory observation, online survey and case studies were applied to find out the answers. ; First of all, it is found that the usage of online alternative media is influenced by a number of factors. In addition to the gratifications sought from media usage, a heterogeneous online community is more likely to accept online alternative media, while intense use of alternative media in turn contributes to more tolerance of difference in society. ; Secondly, this research examines the relationships between online alternative media and the elements of subaltern public sphere. As the research findings suggest, under high political and economic pressure, little space is left for mainstream public sphere, while subaltern public sphere is possible with the help of online alternative media. Non-hierarchically organized and depend on voluntary work, online alternative media partly escape from political and market pressure and become the birthplace of rational public opinions. The Lancet Countdown is an international collaboration established to provide an independent, global monitoring system dedicated to tracking the emerging health profile of the changing climate. The 2020 report presents 43 indicators across five sections: climate change impacts, exposures, and vulnerabilities; adaptation, planning, and resilience for health; mitigation actions and health co-benefits; economics and finance; and public and political engagement. This report represents the findings and consensus of the 35 leading academic institutions and UN agencies that make up The Lancet Countdown, and draws on the expertise of climate scientists, geographers, engineers, experts in energy, food, and transport, economists, social, and political scientists, data scientists, public health professionals, and doctors.

台灣自2002年的電影《藍色大門》後,兼以青春成長和同性戀為主題的商業電影相繼出現。從相關電影文本分析可見,這類電影脫離以往媒體再現同性戀者的刻板印象,明朗清新的電影基調亦有別歷年華語同志電影的悲情和政治色彩,對華語同志電影類型作出了翻新。本論文採取導演深入訪談的研究方法,從電影工業及創作角度切入,指出台灣當時已然崩潰的電影工業環境、輔導金制度、同性戀題材不構成籌資困難,以及青春成長電影類型低成本的特性,均是這類華語同志電影特例出現的原因。由於電影強調同性戀和異性戀者的共同性,對同志的再現反而有所局限,本文認為,更恰當的同性戀再現應包含正面肯定性差異的態度。台灣青春同志電影的個案,讓我們了解作者在商業電影創作中注入個性遇到的各種困難,亦提供了認識「後新電影」重尋生存策略的視角,檢示和整理台灣走出新電影運動後長達二十年的低谷的經驗。 ; Blue Gate Crossing (2002) marked the beginning of a series of coming-of-age films that dealt with homosexual subject matter in commercial Taiwanese cinema. Using the method of textual analysis, it is found that the basic tone of these films is light and refreshing, in contrast to the sad and political tone in previous generations of homosexual films. These coming-of-age films formed a new genre of Chinese-language homosexual cinema and a divergence from previous media representation of homosexual stereotypes. By conducting in-depth interviews with directors of these films and dissecting the creative process of production, it is found that the reasons for the appearance of this new genre include the collapse of Taiwanese cinema, the policy of government subsidies, the ease of securing funding and the low cost of producing coming-of-age films. It is also found that by emphasizing the similarities between homosexual and heterosexual relationships, these films created limitations for the representation of homosexuality. A more appropriate representation of homosexuality should include affirmation of sexuality differences.This special case of a coming-of-age homosexual genre reveals the difficulties faced by directors when they tried to add creative elements to commercial cinema, and provides insights into strategies for Post-New Cinema to survive. "The archives of the Grand Secretariat currently housed at the Institute were originally kept at the Grand Secretariat Storehouse in the Ch'ing imperial palace. They were removed from the Storehouse when it underwent renovation in 1909. After the overthrow of the Ch'ing, these archives changed hands several times, and were, at one point, even sold to a paper recycling factory. Eventually, the Institute purchased them from Li Sheng-to, a book collector, in 1929 thanks to the efforts of Fu Ssu-nien, the Institute's first director. There are over four thousand Ming (1368-1644) documents and more than three hundred thousand volumes of Ch'ing (1644-1911) archival materials in this collection, including imperial decrees, edicts, memorials, tribute document, examination questions, examination papers, rosters of successful examination candidates, documents from the offices of the Grand Secretariat, documents from the offices for book compilation, and old documents from Mukden. Memorials make up the bulk these documents.The archives contain valuable source materials for institutional, social and economic historians. The purposes of the research were to explore the clients' subjective interpretation of their lived experience of depression, their service needs and reflect on the improvement of mental health social work in Mainland China. A purposive sample of eight depressed clients from a self-help group in a mental health hospital in Beijing participated in this study. ; The clients talked about their experiences at different stages: the onset, in the hospital and the rehabilitation, and interpreted their experiences. They also gave some advice to the hospital, the community, the mass media and the government based on their social service needs. ; The theoretical perspectives influenced the clients' interpretations of their experiences, especially the biomedical model. "Reconstructing new homeland" (重建新家園) became the key policy in Sichuan's rural reform after the 2008 earthquake at Wenchuan. Discursively and in practice, the "homeland" that was being reconstructed involved two components — "home" and "land". In the Chinese context, "home" referred to both family and household, while "land" consisted of the physical environment and the resources therein. This thesis argues that all these components were constructed and contested by gendered subjects, and the "reconstructing new homeland" policy was a site where the gender-environment linkage became highly contextualized. ; Combining feminist political ecology with post-structural theory, this study examines the nature and process of how gender and the environment were linked. Ethnographic field work was carried out in three villages in Sichuan—one on the mountain, the second at the foothill, and the third on the plains. The study found that, firstly, these changes provided new opportunities to male members of the villages, and as a result resurrected their declining power and status across the state, community, household and individual levels. These led to the marginalization of women, the elderly, the poor, and non-officials, in contrast to the empowerment of men, the young, the rich, the educated, and officials. 本研究旨在探索台灣自一九九零年代末推行之母語復興運動及其影響。作為使用者為數最多的本土語言,閩南語一度沒落;隨著母語復興措施當中、鄉土語言教學政策的廣泛開展,閩南語自「方言」一逕躍升為台灣文化的象徵,更被從政者甚至政府利用作對外宣傳之用。 ; 作者通過語言人類學田野考察方法,試圖以閩南語作為案例,釐清及解讀以下幾點:(一)台灣民眾當今的語言選擇及使用狀況;(二)他們的語言態度,與其文化認同之對應關係;(三)語言在台灣族群認同政治所扮演的角色;(四)語言政治在各社會文化層面所引起之角力;(五)方言(或語言,如原住民語言)群之競爭,如何掀起語言及文化傳統之再造和復興,以圖合理化其族群作為台灣文化象徵的地位。 ; 研究結果顯示,雖然巴赫汀 (Bakhtin) 的「眾聲喧嘩」(heteroglossia) 理論在實務層面與台灣的多語、多元文化相呼應,但當地政府所提倡之文化多元論、以及各持份者之間的隱性競爭,若以布迪厄 (Bourdieu) 的文化複製理論和傅柯(Foucault) 的權力知識理論解讀,當更適切。總的來說,台灣的母語復興運動,乃一項與昔日保守政權的抗衡行為賦權,控制兼具的政治行動,更是多元政治文化的象徵。 ; This thesis looks into the government-led language revitalization campaign in Taiwan with special reference to the case of Hokkien, one of the "bensheng" (local) vernacular with Han Chinese roots, in terms of language rights, ethnogenesis, and cultural legitimacy. Most of the records on the warfare are from official histories written in Northern Qi (550-577) and Tang Dynasty (618-907). These records, however, are under the influence of political and cultural powers, such as political struggles and orthodoxy. Even some of so called objective description, such as records of the place, time, figure and climate may be kind of recreation of the writers. This dissertation tries to analyze context of these records, including their political and cultural background, along with the development of historiography and other writing traditions. ; This dissertation is made up of several case studies, discussing respectively figures in battle, adventure of Yuwen Tai (the leader of the military group in Western Wei), the image of generals in the Northern Dynasties, the description of strategy and tactics of nomad people, and the historical record of Li Yuan, founder of Tang Dynasty. The principal conclusion is that in the official histories historians descript nomad people in traditional Chinese way. 本論文主要研究香港殖民地時期由 1843 年至 1926 年的通訊歷史,目的是要補足現有關於大英帝國、英國殖民地史及香港史研究的不足。此研究指出,傳送港督的公文往英國殖民地部是一耗時過程,並是香港與英國殖民地部之間通訊的一個持久問題。電報的出現令雙方之間的通訊更為有效;藉著電報,殖民地部除了能更有效地得知香港的最新情況,並能更緊密地監察香港政府的施政。本研究亦分析殖民地部與港督之間通訊的 "資訊層次",這 "資訊層次" 由殖民地部頒布的規例所構建。透過統計結果,作者辯指除了電報外,機密和高度機密公文也是英國帝國對殖民地管治的 "神經系統" 中的重要成份。我們對不同公文的利用、其底層規則及殖民地部對港督公文的核准與否的研究,可以揭示英政府與總督之間的權力關係,並透視帝國和其殖民地之有意識和潛意識的焦慮。 ; This study investigates into the communication history of Hong Kong from 1843 to 1926 in the colonial period. It aims to fill the gaps as seen in previous studies of the British Empire, British colonialism and the history of Hong Kong. The study has found that the time-consuming process of conveying official despatches to the Colonial Office posed persistent problems for both the Governors of Hong Kong and the Secretary of State in the United Kingdom. With the advent of the telegraph, however, more efficient communication between the counterparts was achieved. The Colonial Office was thus equipped with an efficient means for instant updating of the situation in Hong Kong as well as close monitoring of the administration of the Hong Kong government. Our study also analyses the "information order" existed within the correspondence between the Colonial Office and the Governors, which was considered to be framed by the rules and regulations imposed by the Colonial Office. 在國際評鑑計劃中,東亞地區學生的數理能力往往較西方國家為佳。現有學術文獻已就這個現象作深入探討,並提出東亞學生的文化特徵和模型。然而,鮮有研究以縱向的歷史角度,討論東亞教育制度下對於「學習者」的文化概念如何因應全球化的影響而演變。本文嘗試以香港的數學教育為研究個案,探討本地數學課程在教學重心及組織上的轉變。研究發現,該學科在教學上的轉變緣於現代個人主義的制度化過程 ── 社會整體愈益視學習者作為充權和自省的行動者。本研究致用縱向文本分析的研究方法,綜析四十二本於戰後出版的香港高小數學教科書的教學內容。研究結果顯示,歷年來課本及課程的教學愈加著重參與式教學、興趣啟發以及與扣連學生生活等概念。另外,政府官員、老師、本地壓力團體及學術專家等亦援用「以學生為本」的話語,推動課程改革。綜合而言,本研究認為世界政體理論相比歷史主義式的理論視野更有力地解釋數學課程內容的轉變。 ; East Asian learners usually outperform their Western counterparts in international mathematics assessment programs. Although the cultural traits of East Asian learners are well documented and analyzed, the cultural dynamics of the changing conception of "learner" in East Asia, especially under the influence of globalization, is under-explored. Taking Hong Kong as a case study, this paper explores the changes within the emphasis of instruction and organization of local mathematics curriculum across time. I contend that the shift of instruction within the school subject is due to the institutionalization of modern individualism, the process in which the conception of "learner as an empowered and self-reflexive actor becomes culturally legitimate in the society. I employ a longitudinal content analysis to track the changes of the instructional emphasis within 42 senior primary mathematics textbooks published in Hong Kong since World War II. It is revealed that despite the unique cultural and historical trajectory of educational development in Hong Kong, the curriculum embraces the ideas of participatory pedagogical approach, interest stimulation, and social relevance to students. Furthermore, it is found that governmental officials, teachers, local pressure groups and academic professionals draw scripts and models from the discourse of student centrism to drive curricular reforms. The three main research questions of this study are: How are the interactions between urbanization and digitalization? How do digitization and gender relations mutually construct each other in the process of urbanization? ; Using theories of technology domestication, individualization theory and the mutual construction of gender and technology, I analyze the use of computers and internet in the social life of rural and town families. This research found out that in the process of modernization, as rural and town families adopted the use of computers and internet; they gradually transformed themselves into, digitalized families. Furthermore, the individualization of gendered networks stood out as the key characteristic of urbanization and digitalization of post socialist China. 以往的明末清初耶佛相遇研究,更为注重天主教和佛教间的冲突和对比。本文更倾向于身处耶佛相遇处境内的士人的宗教内对话。来世问题不仅是耶佛宗教间论辩的焦点,也是士大夫的宗教内对话转化信仰的主旨。 ; 这是因为晚明时期传统儒学影响,更加关注生死问题的讨论。晚明儒释交融,逃禅悦禅狂禅成为一时风尚。而天主教的传入给关心生死议题的士大夫提供了另一种资源。相对于流于空虚玄妙的禅学而言,很多人认为天主教是一种"实心"、"实行""实学"的思想体系。 ; 明清之际,佛学的发展趋势是禅净合流,唯心净土与弥陀净土慢慢融合。禅净双修在士大夫中很受欢迎。因此,士大夫对天主教生死关的理解不仅与禅学相关,也与净土相关。 ; 明朝政策使瑜伽僧和禅讲僧鼎立,使经忏法事弥漫于士人的日常生活中,这也与净土信仰相关联。对这些经忏科仪的批判,也成了天主教徒理解来世的一个面向。 ; 来世问题,中国天主教徒认为这是儒学的疏略之处,构成了"补儒易佛"的重要内容。 ; Most of the existing studies of the Buddhist‐Christian encounter during the Ming and Qing dynasties emphasize the conflict and contrast between Chinese Buddhism and Catholicism. The present study tends to focus on the intra religious dialogue of the participants. It will indicate that the problem of next‐life or life after death was not only one of the foci of dialogue, but also one of the key aspects of the transformation of faith caused by intra‐religious dialogue of the Chinese intellectuals at that time. ; During the late Ming period, under the influence of traditional Confucianism, the matters of life and death became a focus of debate. At that time, the escapist Ch'an Buddhism became an ethos, and interactions took place between Buddhism and Confucianism. When Catholicism was introduced into China, it offered a spiritual alternative to the Chinese intellectuals who cared about matters of life and death. In contrast to the relatively more speculative and mysterious Ch'an, many Chinese found Catholicism a more genuine, concrete and practical system of thought. ; With regard to the Buddhism during the Ming and Qing dynasties, an important trend of development was the combination between Ch'an and Pure Land Buddhism, particularly the gradual integration between the Amitabha Pure Land and the Heart‐Only Pure Land. Dual cultivation of Ch'an and Pure Land was very popular among the Chinese intellectuals.
