This article reviews changes in the governmental strategies of the Chinese government & argues that the adoption of flexible forms of governance to control & responsibilize the population is an important component of the Chinese regime's resilience. In particular the article concentrates on: a) the strategy of flexible governance in urban areas, where increasing stratification requires the local governments to work to contain conflicts among both disgruntled workers or rural migrants & right-aware middle-classes; & b) the attempt to co-opt emerging wealthy & educated groups in the responsible management of the nation & the preservation of social order. The main conclusion is that through these governance practices, & the propagation of an ethical discourse of citizens' "quality" the Chinese Government is favouring the emergence of new citizens who incorporate both the "autonomy" necessary for them to be consumer in the marketplace & the "responsibility" necessary to maintain social stability. In a context of geo-political changes, the Arab and Islamic world re-discovers, as usual in moments of crisis, the social and economic thought of Ibn Khaldun and his concept of assabiya to analyse the challenges and the risks of the present times. There is, also, a significant attempt to found an autonomous and autochtonous way of political approach in order to attribute a local philosophical origin and intellectual paternity to the recent revolts in contrast with any "westernized" aspect or interpretation.

The analysis carried out by Benedetto Croce in Storia d'Italia dal 1871 al
1915 and in Storia d'Europa nel secolo decimonono, as observed by the
most perceptive interpreters of the historiographical activity of Croce,
excludes the conflict phases that preceded the historical periods taken
into consideration (The Risorgimento for the History of Italy and the
French Revolution for the History of Europe). This paper shows how the
perplexity of the historiographical setting of Croce is also found in the
book about the Baroque period in Italian history that was published in the
same year of the two most important and well-known historical works by
Benedetto Croce.

A personal account of the author's initial attraction to the university, focusing on modern liberal thought and political science, as well as his long friendship with Bruno Leoni, founder of the journal Il Politico. The liberal thought of Guido De Ruggiero and Leoni is contrasted, noting Bruno's strong preference for individual responsibility. Leoni launched other publications, including the liberal review Library of Liberty. Leoni's academic background at the U of Turin (Italy) was influenced by Solari and Norberto Bobbio. It is suggested that future contributions to Il Politico reflect its liberal political science orientation, as suggested by a quote from Plato's Politics.. J. Sadler

Reviews historical details about the UHRO (Revolutionary Croatian Organization of Rebels) & the Ustascia (Croatian separatists), & their cooperation with Benito Mussolini during WWII, led by Ante Pavelic (1889-1959). Mussolini & the European right wing planned to cause internal turmoil in Yugoslavia by siding with the Croatian separatists & indirectly providing arms to the rebels. Once the separatists declined interest in political friendship with Hungary, Pavelic helped found the UHRO around 1932, which began as a terrorist group. Following his release from Italian prison for involvement in the assassination of Yugoslavian King Alexander I Karageorgievic, Pavelic traveled extensively in Italy, from Florence to Turin to Siena, & published pro-fascist, anti-Bolshevik propaganda. Pavelic was allegedly murdered by the Yugoslavian Secret Service in 1959. J. Sadler
Discusses the debate between John Locke & the Remonstrants, especially Dutch theologians Philippus van Limborch, Jacobus Arminius, & Simon Episcopius, in the 17th century. The Remonstrants' concepts of indifference & the freedom of indifference are presented, & implications on theological & political ideals as found in the work of Ugo Grozio, Cornelius de Witt, & Adriaan van Paets are identified. Despite their strong friendship & intellectual affinities, Locke & van Limborch were sharply divided on the issues of indifference in relation to the will & free judgment of man. An appendix reproduces the English text of Pelagius redivivus, or Pelagius Raked Out of the Ashes by Arminius & His Schollers (1626), written originally in Latin by English clerics supportive of Augustinianism, & drawing parallels between Remonstrant (Arminian) doctrines & those of Pelagius. Accusations of heterodoxy against Remonstrant doctrine were nourished by this work that proposed the Remonstrants' polemical assimilation of the heresy of Pelagius. 1 Appendix. J. Sadler

Reviews research conducted by professor Luigi Guarnieri Calo Carducci, particularly two essays he wrote on Italian immigration in Bolivia & Ecuador. The research analyzed data from the early 20th century to the end of the 1950s, which showed that Italian communities have helped shaping Bolivian & Ecuadorian rural economy & military structure, contributing also to the improvement of foreign policy. The Italian government supported most communities in an attempt to establish political connections, but many of those communities found a safe haven when Italy was persecuting them, especially Jewish communities during 1938. Above all, the contribution offered by Italian missionaries is of notable importance as it deeply affected both societies. The analysis reveals very interesting biographical & historical facts that are extremely useful when studying Italian realities outside of Italy from a modern perspective.
