; This article offers an overview of how the concept of cognition has been developed epistemologically in Hermes. The journal's engagement in the field of cognitive science testifies to its resistance to the threat of scientism and offers readers contributions that avoid the pitfalls of dogmatism. The ordinary psychology of teachers, for example, can be productively examined in many other areas – i.e. cognition, communication, and politics – regarding topics as urgent as attention, emotion, motivation, and intention. Pedagogical strategies aimed at increasing retention of information, at organising distributed learning, and at shedding light on the pathways of metacognition fall under the remit of the anti-reductionist approaches espoused by Hermes.
While traditional media are often accused of downgrading the quality of information and political debates, the Internet is usually presented as the leaven of a new democracy. Thanks to its functionalities it is said to transform web surfers into enlightened citizens, to offer real discussion forums and to establish a direct dialogue, without any interference, between the government and the governed. However, does such a vision of a democracy revitalized through the power of technology correspond to the political usage of the Internet over the past ten years? The article tries to answer this question on the basis of the various surveys and studies realized in France and abroad about this topic. Adapted from the source document.
; Hermès' scientific aim is not to defend one conception of the political and politics rather than another but instead to develop a political anthropology that is multidisciplinary and non-sectarian. What are the main features of this political anthropology ? This article aims to outline them explicitly, drawing on longitudinal analysis of the journal issues devoted to this topic.
Political communication, which had long been forsaken by the French political science, has, since the eighties, met with renewed & growing interest among political analysts whose concern lies in the sociological analysis of political phenomena. They have endeavored to question the mythologies & founding beliefs of the realm of political communication & to characterize the role of spin doctors among the experts in politics. They have also attempted to assess the effects produced by the generalization of that activity on the unfolding of political life. This research opens up fruitful perspectives for the comprehension of the ongoing transformations/alterations of contemporary political systems. Adapted from the source document.
What is the Role of the Media in Politics ? A Round Table Discussion Journalists, heads of communication in the public sector and higher civil servants exchange views on the role played by politics in the media, on whether propaganda for social and civil causes is needed, on the respective roles of television and the print media in public communication, and on the search for local communication.
This article suggests exploring how the anthropology of communication, the draft of which was formalised by Yves Winkin following his work on the 'invisible College' in Palo Alto, helps to enrich research in science of information and communication in the political field. The anthropological approach based on the 'New Communication' model seems necessary to understand the phenomena of incommunication that affect the fundamental relationship between governors and governors, particularly in France. The Yellow Gilets crisis makes it possible to illustrate and feed into this proposal, extending the analytical background defined by political communication specialists to all actors, institutions and processes involved in the political field. ; International audience This paper explores how the anthropology of communication, as formalized by Yves Winkin further to his work on the "invisible college" of Palo Alto, enhances research in information and communication sciences into the political field. The anthropological approach based on the "new communication" model seems essential to understanding the failure in communication besetting the fundamental relation between those who govern and those who are governed especially in France. The Gilets jaunes (yellow vests) crisis illustrates and drives this proposal by widening the scope of analysis defined by the specialists of political communication to encompass all the actors, institutions, and processes involved in the political field. ; This article suggests exploring how the anthropology of communication, the draft of which was formalised by Yves Winkin following his work on the 'invisible College' in Palo Alto, helps to enrich research in science of information and communication in the political field. Our reflection leads us to question how far the new paradigm 'internet' could have a decisive role in the crisis of confidance from the representative democracy system's point of view, and from the decentralization of democracy forms. Our 'ecologic' problematic leads us to combine and integrate different angles of study to the research of an heuristic view, which would set free the great lines of impact forces of the new media on social communication and politics. We will talk about, mainly, the themes of transformation of the public communication and information space, about the advantages of the new paradigm for a better participation of citizens in a democratic society, about the definition of good-use, of questions related to a deonthology of e-information, of preventing risks and abuses in using it, of the relationship with classical media. Finally, we will start a prospective reflection evoking different illustrative cenária, according to the manner as governemtns and citizens appropriate these new means of social communication in the communication system (actor citizens/mass manipulation/ populism?).
; Throughout the world, more and more media outlets are making use of sections or columns that provide fact checking. Their purpose is to verify the truth of statements, especially those made by politicians in the public sphere. In France, where it has long been unusual to question the speech of politicians so directly, these fact-checking efforts are creating new and potentially contentious modes of relating; they are doing so not only among journalists who work in the same newsrooms, but also between journalists and politicians. Such politicians seek to limit the risks introduced when their statements are checked, so that they can continue to convey their messages to the public.
