Suggests that the computer industry is one of the most ageist of all industries. Attempts to analyse the causes of discrimination and the consequences to which this leads. Considers economic incentives which may have caused discrimination. Provides a case example of good equality practice and concludes that the way to beat the ageist issue is to remain up to date with skills and that the ageing workforce will mean that the need to attrarct and retain skilled workers will become paramount.

While Peter Dobson was doing national service in the South African Defence Force (SADF) as a lieutenant in the Military Psychology Institute, he was already working as an activist of the ANC. He then worked in the computer industry and during this time passed on to the ANC information he gained about the strategies the Pretoria regime uses to acquire computer technology and about the use of computers in the SADF. He made a statement to this journal in London in October 1989 about his work, in the South African computer industry, need for comprehensive sanctions against the Pretoria regime, how computer expertise is smuggled to South Africa, manufacture of electronics and computer systems in this country. China transformed its economy by shifting from technological nationalism to a more pragmatic strategy of developing national capabilities in conjunction with multinational corporations. Consistent with this transformation, China has revamped its industrial and technology policies to become a major producer of computer hardware and a major market for computing products. In 2000, mainland Chinese purchased more than seven million PCs, while computer hardware production grew to $23 billion. China's policies clearly drew on the developmental approach of other Asia Pacific countries that became leaders in the global computer industry through the strong support of government industrial and technology policies. China has likewise become a major force in the global PC industry, as both the most attractive growth market and as a large producer. It has done so through a combination of industry promotion and entrepreneurial energy. New challenges loom as China joins the World Trade Organization and faces more pressure to open its market to foreign competition.
