Construction industry is second largest industry in gulf countries, that continuously rapidly growing. Similar to other countries around the world, construction industries in gulf region also facing problems due to oil industry uncertainties. Construction industry of gulf countries, construction material waste is getting higher concern. This paper aims to identify various factors in construction management causing construction material waste at Muscat, and Nizwa cities in Oman. Seventy-one (71) factors were collected from literature around the world and organized in structured questionnaire distributed amongst the construction experts focusing clients, consultants and contractors involved in the construction projects. The questionnaire was designed in such a way to collect construction waste causing factors in five major categories in (Design, Handling, Workers, Management, Procurement, and Site conditions). The collected data were analyzed by using Average Index method for each factor. Furthermore, construction material waste causing factors analyzed by individual response of client, consultant and contractor prospective. Analysis identified that 'frequent design changes'; 'wrong material storage'; 'worker's mistakes during construction'; 'poor supervision'; 'mistakes in quantity surveys'; and 'poor site conditions'; are highest significant causes in each category respectively. The result of this study is useful to create or/and improve guideline considering waste generated from construction industry, to avoid problems in looming construction. It is concluded that the government organizations or/and construction industry itself can develop or improve legislation for avoiding construction material waste.

Waste in the construction industry has been the subject of several research projects around the world in recent years. The high volume of waste generated in construction necessitates this study on construction waste minimization practices carried out at selected sites in Abuja, Nigeria. This is with a view to minimizing construction waste through the waste hierarchy principles in addition to other site waste management practices. The research studied the practices used in the management of construction material waste in selected construction sites in Abuja through structured questionnaires administered on construction professionals at the selected sites. The study found that there was no specific legislation on the control of construction waste; and construction professionals felt that completion of projects within a time frame, according to specification and within budget was more important than controlling the quantity of waste produced. While these professionals agreed that there was a need to incorporate site waste management practices, they not only lacked implementation guidelines, but their construction organizations did not have existing policies on site waste management as well. The study therefore recommends that waste management practices should be made an integral part of construction project objectives. With the associated environmental challenges and unsustainable patterns of construction, there is also notable awareness and willingness among the state bodies to adopt sustainability measures and practices in Kazakhstan. This study explores the drivers of and barriers inhibiting the adoption of sustainability paradigm in the construction context of Kazakhstan. The drivers and barriers were validated through the survey and structured workshop with the construction professionals to ensure their relevance to the local context, which were then ranked according to their levels of influence through the lens of the industry professionals in Kazakhstan. Delphi technique was the last stage before consolidating the specified lists. Stakeholder opinions were then consolidated to develop a context-oriented decision support system. The findings reveal that addressing environmental issues is vital to increase the level of sustainability leading to the more efficient use of construction materials and resources. Various social aspects are also found to be driving forces for the effective adoption of the SC concept. On the other hand, a great portion of SC barriers is related to economic aspects, which are followed by government as well as awareness and education related barriers. The findings are hoped to contribute to the body of knowledge in terms of drivers of, and barriers to SC in developing countries, particularly in Central Asian countries due to similarities in context. The findings may also be useful for the construction forefront players seeking ways to improve sustainability performance of the construction industry.

This report is the result of preparatory European research and national investigations in 10 EU Member States. The main aim of the research was to analyse the phenomenon of undeclared labour in the construction industry and to assess best practices to prevent and combat undeclared labour. The share of undeclared labour in construction output and employment appears to be much higher in all countries than the average share of undeclared labour in GDP or overall employment. The authors found enough evidence to conclude that: •the highest occurrence of undeclared labour relates to work carried out by workers next to their regular job. •the status of self-employment is abused, with bogus practices by national citizens as well as foreign 'independent' workers entering the market through labour-only subcontracting. •dubious agencies and labour traffickers supplying cheap illegal labour mainly from abroad have returned. But "illegal never complain and work hard" and only little "persuasion" is needed because of their illegal status. This publication includes desktop research, a summary of the findings and the experts' conclusions, 10 country reports and the recommendations as formulated in a joint statement by the European social partners of the construction industry.

Sustainability emerged as a public concern at a time when the construction industry was in boom. Government legislation and peer pressure led to the growing momentum in implementing sustainable development. However, as the world enters into recession, is there still room for sustainable construction? This paper investigates whether the drivers and barriers to sustainable construction have changed during the current recession. The research consists of a literature review into the subject and recent evidence of the industry's reaction to the recession. In-depth interviews were conducted with construction professionals who represent a cross section of industry and project roles. The key findings reveal that 60 percent of respondents consider sustainable construction would continue to increase despite the recession, with the main drivers found to be increased legislation, customer demand and energy costs. Clients are found to be more likely to focus on passive design features over renewable energy technologies as a means of delivering sustainable construction in an economical way.

The title of this blog is based on the Depeche Mode 1983 album of the same name and, curiously, a line from the track 'Pipeline', made from sounds recorded on an abandoned building site in London. This album marked a departure by the group from its synth-pop origins and allowed songwriter Martin Gore to address aspects of inequality and poverty that were increasing in the early 1980s as a consequence of 'deindustrialisation' under Margaret Thatcher's Conservative government. On the basis of the latest data, we appear to be entering the beginning of the end phase in terms of infections and deaths. It's to be sincerely hoped that what we've experienced, certainly in terms of health, is as bad as will get. According to some reports, the UK could be free of Covid-19 by September.

The construction industry has been a key pillar of the German economy in recent years. New residential construction played a major part in this with the volume of new construction growing nominally by over 60 percent between 2010 and 2014. The development of construction work on existing residential buildings was less dynamic, however, with just under ten-percent growth between 2010 and 2014. A key reason for this is the declining volume of investment in energy-efficiency of residential buildings. Similar growth is anticipated for the German construction industry as a whole in 2015. Construction activity will continue to boost the economy into 2016. In addition to residential construction, commercial construction and sharp increases in the volume of public construction, largely triggered by the major refugee influx, are expected to provide a positive impetus. Gradually, the German government's plans to increase investment in transportation routes and municipal infrastructure should also start to have a palpable impact.

Completion of projects within schedule is a major contribution towards the competitive edge in organizations. This is based on the realization that the achievement of the targeted objectives is determined by the ability to deliver the targeted output within the stipulated time. Project completion delay can be defined as the late completion of work compared to the planned schedule. Project completion delay can be minimized only when its determinants are identified. The objective of this study is to identify the major determinants of project completion delay and methods of minimizing project implementation delays. The research targeted road construction projects undertaken by DCE. The independent variables causing project completion delay of improper project planning practices, poor project monitoring practices, poor leadership skills, ineffective procurement process, poor top management support and financial problems as internal factors, and political situations, local community obstructions, frequent changes in scope and economic factors, and the dependent variable is project delay. The study considered 9 projects through purposive sampling method from road construction projects undertaken by DCE. Data were collected from purposively selected project managers and engineers using structured questionnaire and secondary data were also used. Data were analyzed using RII. Among the delay factors (improper project planning practices, poor project monitoring practices, poor leadership skills, ineffective procurement process, poor top management support and financial problems as internal factors, and political situations, local community obstructions, frequent changes in scope and economic factors), improper project planning practices was identified and concluded as the determinants with the highest influence on project completion delay. So, the enterprise should clearly indicate the project critical paths, sufficient time to accomplish the tasks and details of activity, and contingency plan should be developed to manage unforeseen social, political and economic factors.

On March 9th the European Union approved the Regulation (EU) 305/2011 related to the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) that will replace the current Directive 89/106/CEE already amended by Directive 1993/68/EEC known as the Construction Products Directive (CPD) beyond July 2013. The objective of the CPR is the same as the CPD, namely to "achieve the proper functioning of the internal market for construction products by means of harmonised technical specifications". The article deals with the peculiarities of the construction contract and the contract for capital construction. The article provides an analysis of the current legislation for the comparison of these contracts. The author outlined the main differences between the legal regulation of compared contracts, as well as their common features. It was emphasized that the Soviet Union's doctrine of civil law featured a scientific discussion on the relation between the construction contract and contract for capital construction. Therefore, it was noted that the contracting parties are the biggest difference between the construction contract and the contract for capital construction. However, the Soviet Union's doctrine and law are not in force now, so scientific views on the relation between the construction contract and the contract for capital construction changed radically. Now scientists feature another provision for the differentiation between these contracts. The author established that the contract of capital construction differs from the construction contract. Firstly, the definition of these two contracts formulated differently in the Civil Code of Ukraine and the Commercial Code. Secondly, the contract for capital construction has the provision for the customer's consent to the accession of a subcontracting party. Thirdly, the Commercial Code of Ukraine contains a larger list of essential conditions than the Civil Code of Ukraine. Next distinguishing feature is the limitation period; the Commercial Code of Ukraine contains more differentiated terms of limitation in comparison with the Civil Code of Ukraine. Also, the author defines other distinction between contracts, such as the price; approximate estimate; liability of the parties for non-performance or improper performance of the contract; the rights and obligations of the contractor and the customer.
