Data from the U of Michigan Survey Research Center's 1964 & 1968 national election studies were used to assess the relationship between a belief linkage's organization & its salience. 3 issue domains, each containing 5 issues, were included: (1) race, (2) domestic social welfare, & (3) foreign policy. The higher the level of associations among beliefs on 2 issues, the higher the level of belief organization. The greater the proportion responding to both issues in an issue pair, the greater the salience of the linkage among the beliefs on the 2 issues. 3 intervening variables were used as controls: (A) election year; (B) political sophistication, which is identified on 4 levels following the method used by A. Campbell, P. E. Converse, W. E. Miller, & D. E. Stokes (THE AMERICAN VOTER, New York, NY: John Wiley, 1960); & (C) issue domain. This method resulted in 240 issue pairs as the basis for analysis. There is "an over-all relationship of some strength between belief-linkage salience & belief-linkage organization." Both the level of sophistication of the individuals holding the belief & the issue domain affect the relationship. 1 Figure. J. N. Mayer.
