Themes & contradictions in Paz's works are discussed, including his praises for liberal democracy (eg, as in the US), his critique of totalitarian & socialist regimes (eg, as in the USSR), & his romanticism. In Paz's works, romanticism moderates liberalism; Paz preserves romantic principles, adopting liberalism only where it does not distort the principles. Contradictions between the modern & antimodern in his works & his approach to history are also addressed. 9 References. Adapted from the source document.

One line of research in this area focuses on administrative processes, clientism, & jurisdictional dysfunctions & contradictions. A more fruitful approach is suggested based on the internal analysis of the bureaucracy in its social context. A brief survey of the growth & function of the bureaucracy from the colonial period to the modern day in Mexico is presented. S. Karganovic
That capitalism has now reached a crisis is acknowledged even by its most ardent supporters. Here, the development of modern capitalism is analyzed, including its general context, its strategies, & the role of the military/industrial complex. The internal contradictions of the system are emphasized. It is argued that capital, which takes the line of least resistance, is engaged in a process of destructive self-reproduction that, in material terms, threatens global destruction. However, this crisis opens up many possibilities for a radical alternative. C. Waters
Draws on the scholarship of Hedley Bull (1985) to critique the international relations theory of Samuel P. Huntington. Contradictions are identified in two of Huntington's works, "American Ideals versus American Institutions" (1982) & The Third Wave (1991). It is argued that decolonization processes initiated in the 20th century should not be confused with a "clash of civilizations," with weakness, or with marginalization. It is concluded that the institutions & democratic forms of Western nations should be respected, but not interpreted as signs of superiority. Adapted from the source document.
A critique of postmodern discourse, stressing the role of subjectivity as the center of the ongoing debate. Postmodernism represents the return of social psychologism: it underlines the contradictions of the modernist project, but, in exchange, it only proposes a descriptive framework & a diagnosis of contemporary society. The return to the question of the values that underlie the idea of public issue is proposed as the starting point for political psychology to understand the current conflicts between modernity & postmodernity. 1 Figure, 29 References. Vitale reflects on the existence & nature of so-called "collective rights." Taking the ancient philosopher Carneades as a divertissement & as a source of inspiration, the author explores the arguments both in favor & against the existence of homogeneous communities & the rights ascribable to them. According to Vitale, in neither case the existence or nonexistence of collective rights gains solid ground. Multiculturalism is ultimately incapable of avoiding the contradiction posed by the fact that the particular rights vindicated by each community are completely incompatible with those equally particular rights vindicated by other communities.
