The concept of coproduction primarily refers to direct user involvement in the production of services. This paper identifies the main dimensions of this broad and at times fuzzy concept and focuses on types and styles of leadership that can emerge from, and sustain, effective coproduction practice. We do so by carrying out a narrative review of cases of coproduction in the UK, with a focus on the role of citizens, bureaucrats and, specifically, local politicians, to unpick how the latter can facilitate or hinder coproductive processes. The analysis distances itself from a traditional understanding of leadership to examine relational dynamics rather than organisation structures as the key variable of leadership within coproductive practices.

Research on coproduction—the involvement of citizens in the provision o municipal services-has been decidedly positive, emphasizing the considerable advantages of this model for both urban governments and the citizenry. This article accepts these conclusions but examines several issues in the implementation of coproduction that may jeopardize its vitality. Coproduction succeeds as a result of the increased investment of citizens in service delivery, yet the service bureaucracy will likely exercise predominant influence over the design of these programs. Growing fiscal pressure on local governments as well as acceptance of the privatization philosophy may lead to the transfer of significant service costs to citizens, raising special problems for less affluent neighborhoods. Moreover, without careful attention to design, the commitment of citizen resources to service production in official participation programs may deflect community groups and organizations from taking a policy focus.

This paper explores new geographies of coproduction emerging in urban energy politics. It analyses processes of remunicipalisation of urban utilities, involving the re-establishment of public ownership with a strong democratic and ecological agenda for governing energy infrastructures, with case studies of the German cities of Berlin and Hamburg. Seeking ways of understanding these developments which transcend conventional binaries such as public vs. private ownership or consumer vs. producer, we interpret them in relation to debates first about coproduction and then about urban commons. This latter concept, we argue, provides deeper analytical purchase on new grassroots energy initiatives and the politics that unfold in remunicipalisation conflicts, offering a new avenue for enriching research on the coproduction of energy. ; Peer Reviewed

Coproduction arrangements are being used in a number of places and in a number of forms. Yet, little research exists on assessing the effectiveness of citizen involve ment in the production of public services, which is the focus of this paper. First, drawing upon organizational theory, a method for determining the effectiveness of coproductive activities is proposed. Then the framework is applied to a citizen volunteer emergency medical response (EMS) organization operating in a small rural community as part of a regional response system. The volunteer group is examined in its relationships to the overall EMS system of which it is part, to specific governmental agencies and private emergency response firms it works with and its own members. Variables considered include its contribution to the needs of the system, cost effectiveness, emergency response capacity, interorganizational compatibility, skill levels of participants, and their motivation for volunteering. The study finds that benefits generated by the citizen group exceed its costs and dis cusses how the group successfully integrated itself into a high-skill regional service delivery system and expanded the services it produces to meet other community needs.

Efforts to ensure effective participation of patients in healthcare are called by many names - patient centredness, patient engagement, patient experience. Improvement initiatives in this domain often resemble the efforts of manufacturers to engage consumers in designing and marketing products. Services, however, are fundamentally different than products; unlike goods, services are always 'coproduced'. Failure to recognise this unique character of a service and its implications may limit our success in partnering with patients to improve health care. We trace a partial history of the coproduction concept, present a model of healthcare service coproduction and explore its application as a design principle in three healthcare service delivery innovations. We use the principle to examine the roles, relationships and aims of this interdependent work. We explore the principle's implications and challenges for health professional development, for service delivery system design and for understanding and measuring benefit in healthcare services.

ABSTRACTThis article evaluates the benefits and costs of local coproduction of services. Coproduction is understood as active participation beyond the normal requirements of citizenship by individuals or groups in the delivery of municipal services intended to raise the quality and/or amount of their provision. The benefits and costs of coproduction programs are examined in six areas: tax savings, service effectiveness, citizen participation, motivating service‐directed behavior, training and coordination arrangements, and service equity.

AbstractThe COVID‐19 pandemic disrupted life across the world in multiple ways and those already minoritised and disenfranchised, like care‐experienced young people, bore the brunt of losses and mental health difficulties. This article reports on the findings of 'Feeling Well, Feeling Cared For' an innovative knowledge exchange project on care experience and mental health in Scotland that was seriously disrupted by the pandemic. The article explores how these disruptions created new opportunities for deepening and slowing down coproductive practices, allowing relationships between collaborators to become stronger. Three finding areas are presented and discussed through the lenses of coproduction and quiet activism. These include lessons developed through the process of carrying out this project during a pandemic, the findings from our discussions with young people about mental health, and our reflections on the meanings of activism in the context of a coproductive knowledge exchange process. The discussion highlights how learning from this project might benefit coproductive practices in the future, especially as global interest in coproduction continues to grow across a range of disciplines.
